So I booked the same place as I booked last year - Moab Springs Ranch #10.
We had 8 guys in there last year and that worked well. Robert and I agree that any more would be too cozy.
Duffer has a place now too that's good for 5 more.
I reserved to the north of town. Positives: Better location for riding and town, 20 minutes closer to home for the drive in and out. Negatives: not nearly as many rentals to choose from
IN list:
Hank
Duffer
Jay
Robert
Marshall
Dan
Nathaniel
Kyle
Dave
Jon
Joel
Ken
Tim (Hank's friend from SLC) - for a couple days
Jeff (staying at the KOA and bringing BBQ
Total: 12 + 1PT + 1 offsite
Likely:
Maybe:
It is a nice place but I'm not going to spend as much time there as I did last year. LOL
I hope not!!

OK, list updated. Room in the condo for 1 more, or lets get a few more and get a 2nd spot.
Less in condo 1 is fine too, if we shuffle people around to fill two.
The first condo cost $2675, taxes and fees included. Smaller ones in the area cost less.
For condo 1, lodging costs: 5 guests = $535, 6= $446, 7 = $382, 8 = $335.. Anywhere in that range is fine w/ me.
Other than lodging, its a cheap trip.. eat / drink in if you want, as the place has a full kitchen and grill on the deck. Fuel / food / gas booze doesn't amount to that much. Need a trail pass, I think, although there's been some debate whether or not street legal bikes need one.
Looks like about 50% of the Moab Springs Ranch condos are still available that week. I think we should get another 4 guys interested and someone should rent one!

Might have to make a day trip to Dubinki!
Dubinky looks fun. I am seriously thinking of tagging along on this trip if there is still room for me?

Yep, still 1 slot in condo 1. And we can certainly get another condo yet.
Good I told LD. Sounds like he wants to go also.

I'm in also!
Cadet, Cadet's bro, Ryan......come on now.....I can't go without you.
Sweet! The condo is officially (over) full, so lets get a few more and a second place! 9 total are IN.. so even 1 more and we could have 6 in condo 1 and 4 in condo 2...
Sent from my Commodore Pet
Duffer says he's 90% IN.. so that would make 10 total
In that case someone will need to take the reins for a 2nd spot, and I'd recommend fairly soon. Keep in mind they can be cancelled up till 30 days in advance in case things go pear shaped.
I'm just assuming that the cost for 6 in condo 1 will be acceptable.. See post #6 that wold be $446 each for lodging. Please post / PM / text / call me if its not as I don't want to just blindly speak for everyone and find out I said stuff I shouldn't have :)
What is the return home date? I didn't see it listed.
Arrive 4.29 (Sat) and check out 5.5 (Fri).
I was texting with Duffer last night and he was looking at a 2nd place.. hopefully he will chime in here.
Looks Great, Thanks Hank
Here is what I'm fine that is left(check in 4/29; check out 5/5) at the Spring Ranch where Hank already has the one condo already booked.
Option 1: $1901
Bedrooms: 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6, Beds for 5-6
Master Bedroom: 1 queen
Sleeps 2
Pull out sofa in living room: 2 sleep sofa /futon
Most suited to kids: pull-out sleeper sofa in LIVING ROOM
Bedroom 2: 1 queen, 1 twin/ single
Sleeps 2 in queen bed and 1 in single bed
Option 2: $2391
Bedrooms: 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 7, Beds for 7
- unsure on Bed arrangements...
I would be fine with booking the first option if there would be a couple more people to split the cost($1901/4 adults =$475.25 each).
I really want to go to Moab again and have no good excuse not to, provide the lodging arrangement are ironed out.
Yes there are other places to stay but could be up to 20min commute across town. I feel it would be best to be virtually next door to one another for the best beer drinking conditions and also to help one another with bike repairs.
What's everyone thoughts? If there is not enough takers to justify a second condo, I will not be able to justify paying the entire condo expense and will have to sit out :,(
As Hank previously noted a second condo would need to be booked very shortly.
Lastly, I would make 10 on the in list. If 6($445/each) stayed with Hank and 4 stayed($475) this possible additional condo- Would this be ok with everyone? This would also give enough room for more if needed.
I'm good.
Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Well my opinion is "go for it".. we still have roughly 7 weeks to cancel 1 of them if things change... plus this leaves us with some room for additional people. I have a friend from SLC who is thinking about joining us too.
I think $450 for lodging is still cheap. Trying to save $1-200 for a whole week by stacking ourselves in like sardines isn't money well spent in my opinion.
And I also agree it'd be nice for us all to be next door to each other.
wow $475...that's only like just shy of $80/night.
Quote from: locopny on February 08, 2017, 02:24:31 PM
wow $475...that's only like just shy of $80/night.
And it includes a big garage, pool, whirlpool, deck, gas grill, fully equipped kitchen.. and a real nice pad to stay in. Compared to a hotel which might cost $40 bucks per head per night, its a steal when you consider you can make your own food and save a lot of money there (and have better food).
Only thing that would be cheaper is tenting, and I'm not living in a tent for 6 nights :) Or possibly the Motel 6 and a steady diet of McDonalds, which sounds worse than a tent.
Edit: Just for shits and giggles I checked, and the Motel 6 is $155/night for those dates!
Link to the condo - take the virtual tour or check out the pics. Its a nice place:

Yeah I know. It sounds like a great deal. I better get my butt in gear and get the truck and bike finished.
Tenting is fine for a couple nights. I'm not as youthful as I once was and willing to put up with it for too long
How are we going to arrange rides. Who is taking what for vehicles. I know it might be a bit early to talk about that. Just would like to know. I have a bit of work to do on the van if that that is going to need to be taken.
Im figuring Lance Jay and Duffer will ride with me from Watertown.. so I'm full.

I think it's LD, Robert and l.
Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk
Sounds now like Lance might not make it.. So I'll have room for one more possibly.
Trying to get caught up. First of all the only person on this board that I really know is Fletch, I also know who Rob is from talking to him at the KTM rally and one breakfast. So basically I am the "new" guy that doesn't really know anyone.
In terms of lodging I am willing to pitch in up to half of the cost of a condo if needed. I say book the other one and hopefully we get a few more people to sign up.
I have no plans for getting to Moab so if anyone wants to ride together let me know (I live in Rapid City).
Will probably take my van then. So I can take a few more. Can swing by Rapid if needed or what ever.
I guess when we get a better head count and where folks are we can better plan rides.
I would just like to share that I finally was able to get in contact with the owner of the second condo(spring creek condo # 1) for the Moab trip and got it booked! 8)
Here's a link to the property:
https://www.vrbo.com/559011 (https://www.vrbo.com/559011)
It is right across the cul de sac (as shown in the link below)from the condo Hank has booked(condo #10), which will be very convenient!
http://moabspringsranch.com/?page_id=23 (http://moabspringsranch.com/?page_id=23)
Good deal. I'd rather have a little too much room over not enough. I would think a few more might still decide to come too!
Looks like unit 1 doesn't have a garage, but unit 10's garage is big enough for a LOT of bikes. We had 11 in there I think last year with extra room.
Looks great to me.

Hey Lame Johnny, not tomorrow but the following Saturday we have breakfast. (Second Saturday of the month) Be sure and come so we can meet you. Several of us at the breakfast are going to Moab.
Watch for posts on "Breakfast" thread next week for when and where. LD
By the way, welcome and I love the handle. I believe Bogus Jim knows the history/story of Lame Johnny. I know he got his head cut off.

My brother Joel wants to go, too, if there's still room in one of the condos. I'll meet up for breakfast, Saturday. -- Jon
Far as I know there's room. I've never been there so.......but Hank is ramrodding all of this. Now I'll be in trouble for saying that!
I think there is room for 13 total between the 2 condos, but a few will be on air mattresses etc. 8 in condo 1 and 5 in condo 2

I am torn. I would really like to go on this. Looks like some great riding. If there is room for 1 more put me down for a strong maybe. I will know for sure after this weekend. I would be fine on a cot in a hallway.
For those of us East River folks I have a crew cab truck and 16ft enclosed trailer if that would help. I live in Centerville.
I will make one of the breakfasts someday so I can finally meet some of you all.

List updated.. approaching full!
I'm a newbie at this Moab thing, so I have question for you seasoned boys. I need to know your thoughts about amount of fuel for the daily rides. The new princess has a 2.1 gal tank, is that big enough. I've thought about getting a bigger tank, 3.0 gal, and it would also be nice for the hills sometimes, but.......
We'll just leave you out there to rot Dave. Your gonna need at least 5 gallons to make it back. Sucks to be you. :evil :evil :evil
Actually I have no flipping clue.
I think the longest ride we did last year was maybe 100 miles. The 2-strokers had issues but nobody else really did. the long day we slabbed about 40 miles, rode around for maybe 20 and slabbed back. the two strokers trailered out to that site. Everything there is fairly close. There are some longer rides (White Rim) that are over 200 miles, but none of us last year were set up for that. My 530 is good for 120-150 and I dont think I ever went below half a tank on most days That being said, I have been pondering on bringing a bigger bike capable of that kind of a loop. A slower easy site seeing type day (white rim) might be a nice break between "Metal Masher and Poison Spider" :evil

I don't think I like those names. I'm more interested in "plastic bender" or maybe a harder one like, "plastic scratcher."
Or how about "Starbucks from hell!" You know what I mean, coffee shop on a gravel road.

i am bringing my 530 xc-w and maybe the 1190 or 690 ( I really want to do the white rim loop).
I'm bringing my 400xcw and the xtrainer. I'd bring my 1190 too if I had room :)

I am bringing my KLX and KLR. I am planing on spending a day doing the White Rim Loop.
Bringing the xr650r and up for pretty much anything.
How long is the white rim trail? I'm seeing 100 miles which I should be able to do on my 400. I could pack an extra gallon too.
Hank, that's what I was thinking also.
http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/how-much-fuel-needed-for-white-rim-trail.865390/
150 miles door to door from Moab. I think there is also off-shoots you can do, making it longer or shorter as well. I did in my truck nearly 25 yrs ago and the Scenery is awesome.
That being said, my 530 can do it with a little extra gas brought along, just in case.
I'm in.
I'm bringing my 530, I have a 3.4 gallon tank so I probably just need a little extra gas to make it work.

I have a couple of good road and dirt trips planned for this summer but it sure would be nice to be able join you guys on this ride. I am so envious!
Who all is leaving when?
Does anyone need a ride? I have plenty of room for people and maybe one bike. 2 if they are small.
I was giving a thought about leaving on the 28th. And make it most of the way out and crash somewhere. Even if I just sleep in the van.
Would kinda like to travel somewhere near someone if it works just in case the the old van has issue. Not trying to jinx myself, just know how things can go.
We have been planning to leave Sat AM but I might loat the idea of driving part way Friday night.
Sent from my Commodore Pet
Lot's of talk about gas here. Do I need to bring a couple MSR bottles on our rides you think?
Great, I hadn't heard you were coming along. I think there's only one day (that's planned anyway) that you will maybe need gas. Your WR should do about 120 miles on a stock tank. I can't remember if yours is stock or not. If you have a larger tank than stock, only bring them along for guys that will surely need them. I have a pack of two MSR containers I will need to carry. If I have time I might try to mount a RotopaX for that days riding.
Not only am I coming along Dave, I'm bringing BBQ!
I think I may be driving down on my own from Rapid City. I have to be back on Friday evening for a ton of stuff at work that I have to do. I will be down late on Saturday the 29th and heading back late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

A heads up for those bringing trailers. There used to be a spot for trailers along the driveway, but apparently something is being built there now so thats gone. So now the trailers have to either fit in the garages or under the carports or have to go to a neighboring property and there will be a fee (not sure how much).
That all sorta sucks. I know Duffer's place just has a carport, maybe we can fit 2 trailers under that and all the bikes can go in the bigger condo's garage.
If needed, post in advrider. I am sure there are some local inmates that could store trailers for a week. I also thought there a gravel area above the complex on the top road that may help.
Hank just in case you need to make some trail-side repairs, don't forget to bring some diamond paper.
Have fun guys.
I was going to ask Robert to bring the diamond paper. I'll bring the motorcycle grade assembly tape.

Badass!
Moab; Sunday & Monday......Sunny 65 & 72 whew who!!!!!!!!!
Extended forecast is looking good!
I don't think I can express how envious I am of you Hank and the group you have assembled going to Moab to ride. :(
We have a fresh in of snow here this morning as a little reminder that it is only April in ND and not exactly riding season. >:(
Haha, yes there is some white crap falling from the sky in eastern SD too. Sounds like another good reason to go to Utah!
3" of the wet white frozen stuff here today. Not cool. or rather too cool. Utah envy is definitely creeping up quick.
I've gotten a few calls on who is sleeping where. Well, it doesn't matter to me in the least, but to keep us organized here is who has spoken up and said they would volunteer for condo 1.
I'll take the downstairs bedroom that has one bed, figure Jay will take an air mattress on the floor with me.
Ken and Robert in the upstairs bedroom by the kitchen.
LD and Kyle in the other downstairs bed room... there are 3 beds in that room if memory serves.
Tim will take a floor mattress somewhere since he'll be Johnny Come Lately.
So that leaves one open bed in with Kyle and LD and maybe another spot on a floor mattress in condo #1.
Sent from my Commodore Pet
Also, regarding how we split the cost, my thought is we we add up the number of nights per person, and then divide the total by that, so regardless of which condo everyone pays the same per night. Right now we have 12 guys there for 6 nights and one guy for 3, so we'll add up both condos and divide by 75 and that will be the per night cost. Sound fair?
Sent from my Commodore Pet
Sounds good to me. Thanks again for setting this up!
I don't care who stays were but I will be coming up with Hank and we plan on arriving before Dark, probably around 7:00 pm MDT.
Here are the lodging accommodations at the condo #1 I have rented for the trip.
2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6
Master Bedroom - 1 queen , Sleeps 2
Pull out sofa in living room - 2 sleep sofa /futon , Most suited to kids: pull-out sleeper sofa in LIVING ROOM
Bedroom 2 - 1 queen , 1 twin/ single , Sleeps 2 in queen bed and 1 in single bed
I have dibs on one of the beds is all I care. Depending how comfy everyone wants to get, there's a good chance that someone may end up on a cot or air mattress so plan accordingly.
-Dufferv65
Nathaniel and I don't care where we sleep as long as there is something soft. We can crash in one of queens. We're family.
As usual, I'm bringing beer. ;D
I'm bringing beer too!! Danny boy, I'm even bringing one Goose Island Bourbon County stout for us (2015).
I plan on being there at 8ish in the evening. I would prefer a bed if there is one available, but whatever works. Since you guys are planning everything and I am coming down by myself I will go wherever.

Here is the street address for the condos:
266 N. Hwy 191 - Moab Springs Ranch
Lets plan this, and of course its subject to change but at least we have a starting point and everyone knows where to put their shit :)
Condo 1:
Top floor bedroom: Robert and Ken
Downstairs bedroom #1 (small): Hank and Jay
Downstairs bedroom #2 (big): Kyle, LD, Nathaniel, Dan
Living room on a mat: Tim
Condo 2, exact layout TBD:
Duffer
Marshal
Joel
Jon
That should be pretty comfortable I think.
Hopefully parking doesn't turn into a huge issue. Condo #1's garage should hold all the bikes.
Thanks for the planning! Just checking in. Me - Jon - and my brother Joel in condo 2. No trailer. We have cots just a in case. Condo 2 is the same address?
Yes Condo two is right there. You might be there before us, in which case you can text/call me or Duffer and we'll get you instructions on how to get in. My cell is 605-881-8092
I checked into parking for the condo I had leased out, it sounds like there's room for 3 vehicles or 2 w/small trailer.
Is it 1266, ONE two six six, US-Hwy 191?
Hey, yes it is 1266! I'm not sure where that "one" went. Probably fell off a cliff on metal masher.

Well I discovered when loading up that I have a broken subframe on the KLR. I am sure it started long ago but the rocky woops and content jarring of the Schafer Trail and the White Rim trail finished the job. That is the reason I have no license plate. So need to tear that down this week and spark up the welder :(
I had a great time. Looking forward to seeing everyone in June.

Where and when this year?
If you guys want a little more technical single track northeast of green river the chimney rock area is outstanding. We gave up on moab and spend our whole week in green river. And if you want really technical your about 45 minutes from the 5 miles of hell up in the San Rafael swell.
Way less crowded
