Title: Moab 2012
Post by: jacin theis on May 24, 2011, 08:11:23 PM
Since last time i managed to exclude some folks based on the dates, this year i will give you PLENTY of time to tell us what works. 2011 was the week after Mothers day, Josh and i left may 11, the 19 wednesday of the year. We rode in snow and ice to make Moab.
2012 the 19th Wednesday falls on May 9th, but Mothers day is May 13th.   To respect our mothers, i propose May 18-20 for the DDSR Moab 2012  ride. I personally like this as i plan to tie my 40th birthday into this trip. I am hoping to take a 2 week trip to "wander" where ever the roads may lead. I would though, be sure to be in Moab to ride with you fine folks.   I hope we can arrange this so more of you can attedn, but remember, we have a small window where the temps are enjoyable in the desert.
Plumber Mike and I agreed that this trip would have been tough without a recovery vehicle for Josh, and a trailer for Matts "necessities". So we will try to plan to have a truck haul gear and those who choose not ride. We can pitch in the money to help with fuel. I would like to send a bike with the truck, so i can ride the GS, but its a pig on the tough trails. We can also plan to cook at camp this way instead of eating in town each night. I think we were done riding in time each day to do this.
I think we learned a lot from the maiden trip, so can really make it less expensieve and more fun for everyone. Jerry and David had it down. i think we can build on their setup, and have a great 2nd annual DDSR Moab trip.   Who's in?

I'm in! my bike will be over a year old by then, and with all the replacement parts I'm putting on it will need some fresh scratches!   I too will have to watch the available vacation though, cause I only get 2 weeks and I'll need to have some left over for wedding/honeymoon stuff (hopefully a bike will be involved!)

Just a suggestion - kinda thinking out loud:

What if we got rid of the Fall Black Hills Rally and moved it to Moab?  Would seem to be the perfect time (3rd week in September) for weather in Moab. Plus, the fall rally here really doesn't seem to get as much interest as the June rally does.

I do have an ulterior motive...May doesn't work at all for me. It's a Nielsen sweeps period and I'm stuck at work for the whole month.   :P

i wondered sorta the same thing. Fall should make getting there better for weather. Matt, can you give us your thoughts? are you familiar with the actual weather then, as opposed to NOAA averages. I also thouhgt that by then we would all have been riding and our skills would be a bit better. I know i was worked over by this being my first ride of the year, and it showed in the technical stuff. This is why i started the thread early, lets hear from everyone on the dates.

If you were strength training all winter, you'd be in great shape :P

I'm open for whenever. You guys decide and I'll do my best to be there.

I'm ready to go back now ;D

If we switched Moab to Sept, we could go again in just under 4 months!   ;D

Also, maybe someone else could be responsible for the arrangements.  8)  I didn't go with you guys, but you said that the guys (Jerry & David) who set up the site and stuff did a great job...I nominate them!  ;D

Not that I mind setting up arrangements for the rally's in the hills, but I know absolutely nothing about Moab since I've never even been there.

Hi guys...  I just happened to be snooping around - I really don't read your DDSR site, so somebody can email me if you want my attention, or PM "snooker" on Adv.  ;D

As for a Fall date...  it's similar to the spring in that there is a perfect window - to avoid the heat yet also avoid the potential for a cold wet day with mud and bike swallowing clay.  I don't know much more than the average weather stats...  I prefer a bit hotter and less chance of rain and mud/nasty clay.  It would be different if we were mtn biking and sweating our asses off - then I'd be inclined to chance the wet/cold weather and stay cooler.   So for motos I'd say the mid-May date in the Spring is optimum, and in the Fall I'd say it centers around 9/25 - 10/1 as optimum.  However there is one big difference to the Fall and that is there is much less daylight, sun sets at 7:00 instead of 8:30.  Makes time for dinners in camp a lot harder I've found.    I've camped there on Halloween and froze my ass off in the evenings around the campfire...

I'm thinking there are fewer people there in the fall and a bit easier to get a campsite.  BTW, the reason Gerry and David were able to get such a choice shady site is that they got there on Monday (I think?), if you arrive the end of the week it is much harder.  In fact, Gene and I were the last to leave our camp on Monday and there was already somebody moving in while we were packing to leave.  Arriving on Sunday is the best, of course it's not practical for most people but consider it.

If you set the date for the weekend of 9/24/11 I probably can't make it as that is my granddaughter's birthday weekend, but the weekend of 10/1 is a definite possibility and I'd love to go again.  But hell you can never find a date that fits everybody's schedule so plan it and I'll see...

Hello,  I'm new to the group but a Fall Moab would be fine with me.  I can make any schedule work as I just tell the bosses when I want off.
By the way where is the jumping off point for this?

oh yeah Jacin??   :o    ..I checked around with my Moab desert freaks and found out it is Little Arch -there are mountain bikers that go across it as well!!!  G-N-A-R-L-Y.   You just have to be very comfortable with this type of riding, I'm not.

It is right on the Poison Spider trail http://www.mountainbikebill.com/ut-poisonspidermesa.htm (http://www.mountainbikebill.com/ut-poisonspidermesa.htm), very doable on your 250 but doubtful on the 1200, considering the issues you had on Klondike Bluffs (sorry!)...   I'm talking the trail itself not the crazies that go over the arch!  There are a couple of tough sections to get up to the top that I've read are tricky - haven't been up there for a couple of decades at least.

Specifically, Little Arch is at -109.5856, 38.5635 and here is a MAP: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/poison_spider_mesa/maps/map_big.gif (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/poison_spider_mesa/maps/map_big.gif)

Oh yeah and Josh, the location of Little Arch is above the Potash road which is on the west side of the Colorado, what you see in some pics looking under the arch is actually the Kane Creek road on the east side of the Colorado, and specifically the parking lot at the start of the very exposed Moab Rim Trail...

oh what a place...

so the weather right now is awesome in Moab. :'( Has anyone thought anymore about going again in the spring? I had a great time (could have been the company) and want to ride a smaller bike out there. I hope we can get a group together for this and plan a trip.

so what days would most of the group plan to be in moab if we make this work in may?

if i ride out May 17 and ride back May 20 that would give me 2 days in Moab and 2 doable road days on the bike.

boat.man, could you make this rally fit into your schedule?

Wow Joni, time does fly. We already had the 2012 Spring Rally, its now June and if you close your eyes very tight, its getting warmer each day. Oh, and in this dream, i have the Yami Tenere'.....  :D    I think no one want to mess with Yeti's spring rally as we kinda hijacked the fall one already.

spring rally is always the same weekend in june and always at the fish n fry so no discussion is really needed.

fall rally location is up for debate, so discussion is welcome!

Not much with this group is etched in stone, but yea, until we have a reason to change, spring at FNF, fall at a site of choice.

FNF takes pretty good care of us and they like having us stay with them but if we were in the northern hills all the time we would miss out on some prime riding in other parts of the hills, so we branch out a bit for the fall rally.  First in Nemo, then Plamer Gulch KOA, and now maybe Deerfield.  Plus, FNF and many other like to start closing up after labor day, so it is another good reason to branch out and see what we can find.

Plus, FNF is close to that Bulldog Canyon trail that Yeti and Joni like so much. I told them at the top that everyone was exhausted but they kept jumping up and down like kids, yelling "Again! Again!".   ;D ;D

The rider is Dave Wood, former AMA motocross pro. He makes it look easy, 1 hr 18 minutes. Bike is KTM 300, camera is a Contour 720p.

After spending a few day in Moab at teh end of Sept. I am definately ready to go back! Strange question, but how many of you ski?? The locals around Moab said they recieve very little snow and it is usually gone in a day. Daytime temps are in the 50's most of the winter, so..... I was thinking of loading the bike and the ski's and heading that way. maybe a couple days skiing in CO followed by a few days of riding in Moab. Don't think it could get much better than that!?!?!

I'm already planning a ski trip to Colorado in March. I have a friend that lives in Vail. Gonna try to do 4 mountains in 4 days; Vail, Breckenridge, keystone and Arapaho. Wish I could do it to correspond with a trip to Moab but don't think that will work. Me and my boys do this ski trip every year and it eats a lot cash. We'll have to see if there's some left for the spring Moab trip.

The year before last I paired my trip to Moab with some moutainbiking. I stayed in Frutia CO for the first few nights and rode the MTB trails around there. It was so worth it the trails are amazing in and around that area. When I arrived in Moab, I rode the early mornings on the MTB and I rode my DS bike in the afternoons till evening. It was a blast, but I wish I would of had group to ride with. One day I rode with some guys from Texas that were camped next to me, but the rest of the trip I did on my own, which was fine, but I relied upon my cell phone and spot tracker to rescue me if I got into trouble. That was a limiting factor as to what trails I rode, I didn't want to get in over my head and end up with problems that couldn't handle on my own. It was my first trip to Moab, and it was worth it just to experience what I had been reading about for all those years in the MTB magazines, the dual sporting was great too, the landscape is so different than any other place I have previously been. I was in awe the entire trip, it was hard to concentrate on riding sometimes with the amazing landscapes before me.

I'm trying to get my brother from Laramie, WY to join me in MOAB this year.  Who can suggest a good place to stay?  There are many places to choose from on the net.

I would like one not to far from good food and where we can park the bikes and work on them if need be.

I see some say " NO Maintenance Allowed"

Thanks

Well its been pretty quiet around here.  I have a three free weeks in April, so it looks like April 13th thru the 16th for my MOAB trip.  Is that doable for anyone?  I have one who is in and I am working on another.

I am interested as last year was a really great time. My issue is that i am trying to plan a 10 or so day trip that would take me hopefully into Canada or to the coatst. Not sure. anyway, April is a bit wearly to be crossing the mountains. Sportfaller is still mad at me for talking him into riding to Moabas early as we did last year. I agree we need to do some planning. I do know there was some concern about having it before school is out, as some wanted to include family. That also put it into soem heat in hte desert.

I hope you take the lead on the planning since you sound comitted, i am still not sure what i am doing this year. :P
