Dates are June 21, 22, 23 & 24, 2012. You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, June 21, departing on Sunday, June 24. Weather should be dry and warm - avg high 78, avg low 52. BUT, this is South Dakota...if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute. ;-) Be aware that there is very spotty cell phone coverage at the campground (can be a good thing), but if you ride to the top of the hill (2 minutes away) most will get a good signal.
Entry Fee: FREE!
Camping: Tents - $7 per person/night, RVs/Campers - $20 per night. You will pay the campground when you arrive, no pre-payment required. I will reserve all tent and RV sites from entries on this sign-up thread. FnF have cabins available as well, but you will need to reserve those yourself by calling Gary or Michelle. Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get the special discount!
We will have enough room for plenty of tents. RV sites near the tent sites are at a premium and need to be reserved as far in advance as possible, although there will be plenty of RV spots available away from "ground zero".
The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it). All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.
Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc. There will be something for everybody!
The Fish 'n Fry campground (FnF) has full showers (coin operated, bring a couple of quarters if you don't want to smell like a dirty biker!), real bathrooms (with sinks & mirrors!), a general store (with beer), a small restaurant (with beer on tap!) and a grill and shelter we can use if it rains. 24hr gas station/convenience store right across the street, and Deadwood is only 10 minutes away. There are picnic tables, but if you want a guaranteed seat by the fire you better bring your own.
Electricity is available to charge cell phones, iPods, etc., however it is outside, so use at your own risk!
Firewood from outside the campground is not permitted (sometimes an exception is made for us DDSR folks, though). The FnF has bundles of wood for around $4, I think.
Limited food will be provided, but plan on fending for yourself during the day.
- One night will be chili & nachos (courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Yeti)
- More to come, I'm sure!
Cars, trucks & bike trailers will have room to park, but could be a ways away from your campsite.
DISCLAIMER:
Anyone attending this event, does so at their own risk. The Yeti, any other DDSR member, the FnF campground or ANYONE BESIDES YOU will not be held responsible for injury to yourself, your bike or gear! Now, let's get out and RIDE THE HILLS!! P.S. No helicopters allowed! :-)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
FISHING: Fishing is allowed along the creek running into and out of their little stock pond at FnF, and a fishing license is not required.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
PERMITS: Don't forget, permits are now required to ride off-road (on trails designated 'TR' on the new MVU Map) in the Black Hills National Forest. Click the link about halfway down this page on the right-hand side (Application: Annual Motorized Trail Permit):

Cara and I will trailer out Thursday. We'll be bringing the XT225, the DRZ and probably the ZX-14R on a trailer. We'll likely spend part of each day burning up canyons and do some light trail riding (I have a rookie with me!) for the rest. Can't wait!
Edit: All the RVs and cabins w/ bathrooms are already booked! We'll be tenting.

I guess there is a womens kniitting group or something going to be at the FishN'Fry the same time we will be there.
Hank, I hope Cara can be a good influence on my wife, Diana, and teach her the joy of learning to ride. Also, my oldest daughter thinks motorcycles are for boys.

Wife, two daughters 8 & 9 and a 20 y/o son (all non riders) may come up Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Not sure yet what the summer schedule is going to be for the girls. Between the pool, the creek and a couple of RZR's, I hope they should be self contained while I am gone during the day. The wife knows I signed us up so I could go ride, but we will see how it goes. I hear you on the pressure not to be gone all day with family back at the camp.

I plan on bringing my plated KDX200 and my Plated XR500R.
Driving - hauling bikes in pickup to the hills.
;D
I had to revise our dates - Mrs. Yeti and myself won't be able to make it up there until Friday afternoon. We're considering bringing the 1200GS instead of the WR250R and riding mostly 2-up, mostly flat/old-man/easy trails. 8) We can lead around the 'big bike/no rocks/no hill climbs' group! ;D
I'm gonna edit mine too. I will be bringing Mrs Buffalo, aka, Xtarrablance driver, as well and will secure a room or cabin.
So that makes 3, 2 riders, 1 nonrider.
Planning for Jake and myself, havn't talked to my brother Todd yet who was with us last year.
I'm about to have surgery on my left wrist though, and will need every day prior to leaving to be able to make the ride. I broke the ulna when I was a kid, and it healed in a sketchy way, and two years ago I tore several ligaments in that wrist, I was in a cast for eight weeks. Unfortunately I fell on an icy patch in our parking lot here at work last month, and managed to re-tear the ligaments, and displace the ulna. We were able to avoid surgery the last time, but it looks like I'm heading that way now. The doctors are talking about kind of a fun surgery where they will harvest a tendon from my arm, and attempt to "weave" my wrist back together. If all goes well I should be out of casts and beginning rehab first part of June. Fingers crossed!

I'm working on a set of super motard tires for my bike that I can use for commuting everyday. So, I'm finally going to be able to get a much more aggressive dual sport tire. A set I don't have to worry about using on the street too much. I know this is a can of worms, but I'm debating if Pirelli XCMH tires or Kenda K760's would be good for the single track in the Black Hills. I know there's a million threads on this. I'm just asking here because I don't know if its just going to be rocky and hard pack or is there going to be a lot of deep sand. In the video's it doesn't look like mud is much of a concern.
Don't worry, there isn't any sand, and we all hope there won't be much mud. You can plan on hard pack and plenty-o-rocks. I bet a trials type rear and an aggressive front would be pretty trick.

Yeti, if you and Mrs. Yeti are still doing the 1200GS starting Friday, I might try to convince my girlfriend to join me (and you guys) on the Weestrom. It will be fun to introduce her to what real motorcyclists (as opposed to bikers) are like. If not, I'll probably tow the WR426 and Super Sherpa up again. Hey John - yeah, the Mrs & I are still considering taking the GS. Having another couple to ride around with 2-up would probably seal the deal. :)
Lotsa activity here the last few days! We're up to 37 (give-or-take) attendees!! This could be the biggest rally yet. :cheers
Yeti, I think me and my wife might be up for 2 up ride too. Ours may be fairly short d/t my wife's bad knees. Hopefully it will be a day where they're feeling good.

That's great. After some consideration, I've changed my mind and will be there from the 21st. Why cut it short when I don't need to? I had Sasha with me on Nemo road the other day on the Weestrom. She likes it. I'm tickled. We'll find someplace to ride and I'm looking forward to the good company on the 22nd. I don't know yet whether Marcus has found a body to cover his job. If he does, that's a second tent and probably an extra bike (the Super Sherpa) if I decide to go get dirty after Sasha is tired of riding pillion. No sane person would ride the WR426 to FnF from Nebraska, so might as well have two bikes on the trailer instead of one. I'm getting pumped up.
John
I got called up for jury duty. :facepalm
I'm trying to get them to reschedule it.
That's a bummer. Whens the jury selection? If it's before the rally, just tell them during the questioning that you think the person is already guilty and there is no way you can have a biased opinion in the case. I do believe if you have vacation plans in place for that week and reservations made, it can be excused.
That's my thought, I'm working on that. I don't mind serving, but the short notice is a bit disruptive.
I'm in again this year.

Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie to the group, forum, sport, and everything. I'm loaning my KLR out to a friend the weekend of the rally but wondered if it would be possible to still come up one evening to meet a few people and get some ideas on riding the Hills, find people to ride with, etc. And if you're all off riding and it's better to wait til another time when I have my bike back that's good to know too. FHA SMS so much!
TrueSDgirl, Your welcome to drop by any evening, we're usually done riding by 6'ish. Come and meet the bunch. Friday or Saturday would be better than Thursday as more folks will be around. All are welcome in this group. Its a very good bunch.
Stop over at the "Itroduction" area and tell us a little about yourself.
Nice to have you here.
Yeti please ammend my sign up to include 5 additional KLR riders this could be 3 tents and a pop up camper
it will be sweet to see AncientMariner and fringefan is plumbermike in the area that weekend?
its going to be wild with everybody swapping bikes over the winter
Bogus I might be driving down on wed tohook up with Gerry in Custer possible ride on thur?
most of my guys will arrive fri by car I am dialing in on how to haul 6 bikes with pickup and trailer
See ya all in 3 weeks NDave
Gotcha NDave!
And welcome SDGirl! We need more girl riders around here. ;-)
Wow, we're up to 52 attendees! About ~40 riders. Biggest rally yet! Wish I could make it up on Thursday instead of late Friday... :(
We're gonna have to maybe get a bit more organized on our rides as there will obviously be several groups. I know I don't want to lead around 40-something riders. :o
Anyone have any routes planned out yet for us '2-up easy trail' riders? If not, I'll try to come up with some trails that won't bounce our pillions off. :evil
And don't forget - chili and nachos for dinner on Friday night, courtesy of myself and Mrs. Yeti. I've never made chili for 50 people...hope there's enough. :eat
Anyone else planning on feeding the masses?

I'll (gasp) be TRAILERING my bike up from hill city, so I can camp in comfort. As far as other supplies, I'll bring some clean, debarked, bug free firewood (btw, is my maul still around from spring rally 2 years ago?), as well as a large selection of tools, a couple big tarps, cornhole, and my easy-up. Can anyone else think of supplies/tools/comforts that you'd like me to bring?
oh yeah, and I'll be carrying a fairly comprehensive medical kit on the bike, and may throw my county radio in my backpack J.I.C.
Remember, the first rule of the rally is NO HELICOPTERS! :evil
I just realized I don't have permit stickers yet and we're 3 weeks out. How long has it been taking from online order to receipt?
permit-schmermit, lets see them catch ya! :evil
I just ordered my permit tonight.
Last year I remember them coming VERY quickly. It said on the web, as I was ordering, that they can be expected to arrive within a week. Last year I think it was 2 or 3 days but don't hold me to that.
Hi my northern friends! I'm gonna see if I can make this one! I usually always stay at home in June as I live on an irrigation reservoir that only has good boating in June, but this year due to lack of snowmelt it will be a mud hole anyhow.. so we'll see what the wife says.. I kinda blew my vacation days on Baja this year. If I convince her to come (it's a selling point for a kitchen pass), what is there for her to do all day?? ideas?
I don't follow the forum much but anybody heard from Plumber Mike or Jacin about coming to this? curious. Will you be providing another Malcom sighting this trip?
-matt
p.s. I don't want to hijack this thread but here's a pointer to my 2012 Baja trip pics and report - you can comment over on this thread:

And if.....just if I crash and burn I'll have someone to drive my sorry butt home. 8). JoniJo
We have a lot of riders coming this year... so here's a short video with some tips that may improve your safety and enjoyment at the rally.
Now THAT is funny. Thanks for the Monday AM laugh. ;D
Too funny! Will we be hitting any sidewalks during the rally?
Love it!
I promise to heed none of the rules....... 8) JoniJo

+1 for medicinal purposes of course!
and full reimbursement, of course!
My wife will be along to keep any other wives company. I'm sure they will find plenty of others to keep company.
Funny video man! Rambo sure stole a noisy little scooter, and what was all that blue smoke coming out? ;D Things sure have changed. I held on to my IT175 for about 20 years until I finally dumped it. I rode that thing all over slickrock trail in Moab back before mountain bikes. All it had going for it was a really low 1st gear and I went along some fins there that I would be too chicken to even walk across nowadays...
Thanks for the tips about wifely adventures everybody. Actually my new idea is to get my kids to bring their new travel trailer and show the grandkids around the Hills for the weekend! So got a question about that...
If I have a 6 yr old on a CRF50 and a 10 yr old too, both unplated bikes, can they ride out the back of the FishNFry legally? and are there extremely easy places to ride (wide and flat) inside and/or right out of the campsite for the 6 year old? Without having to cross the highway?
thanks..

Oh, I missed this - let's do the pulled pork on Thursday or Saturday, your choice Gerry!
Gerry's choice - Saturday Night pulled pork sandwiches, with baked beans and NDave will bring the potato salad. Still working on getting more of Gram-ma's apple pies for dessert. Looking forward to seeing all new and old motorbiking buddies.
PS; Snooker, I did invite Marty Smith but it sounds like he's busy putting on a motocross clinic.

My kids are bringing a pw50. They are still a little bit scared of it, so I'm just bringing it and if they want to ride it they can. I was told it will need a sticker to ride on the trails legally (since it wasn't covered in the rally video I think breaking that rule might be fair game). I have the same questions you do. Maybe we can work out a group ride.
I'm willing to make pancakes for breakfast Friday or Saturday Morning which ever some of the veterans think would be the best, maybe Friday, I should still be healthy. Will we have a group area where we will all eat.
Oh, My family is arriving on Wednesday. So if anyone else is there I'll stop by and say "hi." Actually, no matter who you are, if you have a motorcycle I'll talk to you.
Reserved our spot 2 from mt coming to see the bh
No need to reserve rv spots I reserved 2 rv spots for me and the 4 montana guys for friday and sat.
If I get lost or seperated from the group, I hope I don't have to depend on my map reading skills. Unless my two year old fits in my backpack, he seems to have a good grasp of it.

I had no idea those were available - are they at any forest service station?
You can download them here and print. Won't be waterproof though.
2012 Color Maps (http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPyhQoYAOUjMeXDfODy-HWHg-zDrx8kb4ADOBro-3nk56bqF-RGGGSZOCoCAPi8eX8!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS9ZQnZ3LzZfMjAwMDAwMDBBODBPSEhWTjJNMDAwMDAwMDA!/?navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=stelprdb5292920&navid=360000000000000&pnavid=&ss=110203&position=Not%20Yet%20Determined.Html&ttype=detail&pname=Black%20Hills%20National%20Forest-%20Maps)
I didn't know you could buy them for $10 until LD told me.
LD showed me too, so I bought a set to carry as backups to the GPS map.
any FS office should have them
I have the map and I have the GPS. I use both of them and enjoy the security of knowing where I am, but do you ever miss the days of not knowing where you are? Being lost and home way too late. Sometime I'd like to ditch the maps and GPS and go riding all day, not get home on time, make new discoverys, feel the freedom, and have another story to tell.
So, give it a try sometime and let me know how it goes.
I talked to my brother Todd yesterday who was with us last year, and he is coming as well. So, 3 of us. Getting ready! New fork seals, fork springs, tires for Jake, and the list goes on!
Oh yeah, need trail permits. Probably already posted, but where is the website?

i wouldn't sweat the trail stickers too much. i don't think i rode on 1 single trail last year that required one. i've never seen a forest ranger, and they can be purchased once you get out there.
You can get the permits at any Forest Service location. But, like loingrader sez, I wouldn't worry too much about it, you only have to have one if you're riding on trails marked TR on the MVU map which is mostlly single track - and who's gonna see a ranger out there?? 8)

Okay...thanks guys, we'll just take our chances then. We'll play the dumb card :o since we're from out of state if anyone says anything.
I just received my permit today. It took 7 working days for it to arrive.
Some tax's I hate to pay; sales, property, income, sewer, phone line, well just about all of them. But, I don't mind paying for a trail sticker or fishing license as long as the money keeps the resources available for Me to use.
Not to be too high and mighty, I'm not getting a trail sticker for the PW50.
If you buy a permit at the last minute you can print one out on your computer for proof.
Got the maps, got the trail permit...and I'm out. Medical and business expenses have intruded. See you all some other time.
Sorry to hear that Klay

My son Marcus can't get a substitute to cover his job so he won't be coming. My ribs are broken again, right side this time, so I won't be coming. Since I'm not coming, Sasha won't be coming. This is very disappointing. You wouldn't believe how the ribs got broken. I was riding my bicycle on the city bike path and a Canada goose darted under my wheel. I foolishly expected them to dart away from danger. I guess they're just as stupid as deer after all. Presently in Denver to look after the suspected retina separation.

Welcome again Douglas, I got you on the list.
Could you tell me the length of your RV? Thanks!
I have a 17 foot trailer with a truck to pull it. I also have a 10 x 10 awning that I would like to setup to display two or three bikes with the FarkleBar. If I had electricity 110v it would be really nice.
Thanks,
Douglas
Hi peeps, I got a Fun Pass so looks like I'm gonna make it this year! No RV no family just a tent. Planning on coming late Thursday night (10-ish) so gimme a hint where to pitch my tent if you would... I have another guy I might bring along to split the gas cost from Colorado with, if so I'll update this, Yeti. It's been a bad week here with the fire west of Ft Collins, nice to get away from the smoke and do some riding! Thanks for explaining the OHV stickers better - I got one last time but think I'll pass. I don't have the clearance to do much single track (and aluminum is so expen$$ive). ;)

Hey all,
With the list of attendees still growing - 61 and counting - I'm beginning to get a little worried about the food situation.
As you all know, Mrs. Yeti and I plan on bringing chili and nachos for dinner on Saturday night (as usual), but I can only make so much chili. I was thinking it may be a good idea to have some hot dogs and buns to make chili dogs with on Sat night....anyone wanna volunteer to bring a few dozen hot dogs, buns and fixin's???
Otherwise, I don't think my chili alone will feed more than 25-30 people.
Sprout, I was just talking about you to my kid the other day and wondering if you were coming. Will be great to see you. Poor Jerry, He'll never live that one down. We'll see if me brings toe saver boots with him this year.

BTW, I spoke with Michele at FnF and we will have access to the group area, and she is going to string up some extra outlets for us so I can plug in the crock pots for the chili and nacho cheese. I just love Gary & Michele at FnF - really good people! I think they have a grill there too that we can use for the hot dogs.
That way, everybody won't have to visit the Yeti-mobile to get their chili, we'll be all set up in the group area with a nice bonfire going....gonna be a great weekend, just wish I could come up on Thu instead of Fri (still working on this).

Yeti, We (North Dakotan's) can cook whatever night you don't want to cook, just let me know so I can set up the electric roaster in the morning before we go riding. Planning on feeding 60 or so. Pulled pork with buns, beans, potato salad - no beverages Apple pie is limited, and will be first come - but pretty sure Sprout won't be getting any pie.

Hi Everyone,
The family and I are going to be in Custer camping this weekend. Unfortunately I can only pigy back the KTM 200 on the back of the camper so I am stuck with a bike without a plate for this trip. I plan on riding the single track between Johnsons Siding and Sugar Shack Friday and Saturday, any chance any of you will be leading some rides in those spots. If so I would love to tag along for a while.
Thanks,

I grew up in a state of Mizzery, and fled to Colorado as soon as I got out of college and landed a job there. Learned to ride on a Hodaka in the Ozarks, if you string together enough up and down hills, after a week or so you can net about 10,000 feet in elevation gain, 200 feet at a time! Don't worry I will protect you from Gerry - I know his weak spot... hehe
Hey speaking of food, I have a box of another 50 or so frozen beef franks... I'll just bring them for general principle for whatever night, in case. You never know we may need to make friends with the neighbors or something...

Having a great time. Lots of good folks out this weekend for fun and only a few injuries, Rib injury, Insect sting reaction, old ankle injury exacerbation, and a few bumps and bruises but no thing serious so far.
The food has been great, thanks, Yeti and the Mrs for the Chili, Gerry and NDave for the pulled pork, and Hank(?) and wife for the Brats. know there were others that assisted with food. thanks so much.
Also had some great trail leaders. Thanks sharing some of your local knowledge with the rest of us.
Once again, great respect shown by all to each other. We are so lucky to have such a great bunch of folks that seam to all get along great with each other. Never a negative work heard. That says a lot about a group.
had a great time riding thurs. and fri. sorry I had to miss the weekend! hope everyone else had as much fun as I did. Sorry I'm bad with names, but if any of you want to ride anytime let me know, I'm always up for it!!!
thanks
Mike
It was great seeing everyone again. There sure were a lot of new faces this year and I know I didn't get to talk to everyone.
Cara and I had fun and she got some great experience. Next year we'll be ready for some group rides.
Thanks for for showing us Missouri boys and one short Iwegian (sprout) a good time! We loved it and will be back for sure next year! Sprout was moving a little better by the time we got back to his place last night. I think he was better, or maybe he was just trying to appear healthy in front of Mrs. Sprout! :-X :-X
Marc
Happy to hear Sprout was improving, definatley have to do it again. I have more single track that we didn't get to.....
I enjoyed seeing some of you good people on Friday. Wish I'd been in shape to ride. Went to Denver Saturday, the next day, to pick up the new bike. I couldn't even tighten the tie down straps, let alone roll it up the ramp to the trailer. Good thing the guys at Erico were helpful. It took my son, my grandson and his posse to get it unloaded rightside up. Hoping to make the fall rally.
