Dates are September 13, 14, 15, and 16, 2012. You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, September 13, departing on Sunday, September 16. Weather should be warm during the day and chilly at night (down into the 20s) BUT, this is South Dakota...if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute. ;-)
Entry Fee: FREE!
Camping: Tents - $12.60 per person/night, $5 for an additional tent
RVs/Campers - $26 per night for full hookup, $21 for electric only
Cabins - $67.50 / night
Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get this price!
The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it). All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.
Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc. There will be something for everybody!

My other son and his family will be joining us as well but he can fill out his own post.
He has not been able to obtain a bike and if Nathaniel does not complete his KLR250 rebuild before this date, the Pig...er Tiger will be making the trip. No wet rides up Bear Mtn please. Should be fun to throw it around some mild trails again. Tires are a little more aggressive this time.

Hi, I'll be coming up from the Denver area on a Suzuki DR650.
I met Jacin Theis and a big guy named Dave at the Moose Run Rally here in Walden CO, and they said I should come up!
I'll see you there!
Gary, glad your coming up. It will be nice to ride with you again. Have a safe ride!
We switched our cabin to a tent reservation - so there should be a cabin available.

I was going to call them soon and just run through the list, but I have NOT been making reservations for anyone under the assumption everyone was doing their own!

I made my own reservations. will be interesting to see how this campground works. I love that area.
I'd love to join you this fall but a trip to Boise with Sasha preempts it. We'll see if her backside can handle the Weestrom's passenger accommodation that long. Have fun. No helicopters!

I was out riding today and stopped by Mountain Meadows Campground for a drink. They said they were ready for us and confirmed there is ONE cabin left. So, if someone wants to upgrade, here's your chance. Also, she said (forgot her name) the nights have been getting cold. Weather looks like mid 70s for highs and the nightly lows are in the mid 30s. Hank, you might want to re-think that tent idea! LD
ALSO, I forgot.....should we plan on a supper night. I know Mr and Mrs Yeti probably won't be there for their famous chili. My wife is willing to make a big pot of chili and Dan talked about bringing another type soup. Its up to everyone, it's a small group, what's your opinions/thoughts? And, if so what night, Friday?
I will have some extra room in the motor-home, a queen fold out and floor room if anyone wants it or is cold. I am not sure if the wife and kids are coming to visit or not. How many are we expecting?
My wife and I had talked about throwing a beef stew together. That and what LD can drum up and what ever anyone else wants to throw in, we should do a community meal one night. Do they have a pavilion of some kind? Friday or Saturday works for me.
I have yet to get the Tiger back together again, waiting on BikeBandit super slow service to send my gasket. The stator arrived over a week and they ordered on the same day. I'm hoping that there are no other issues when I get it back together like the Voltage regulator.
If for some reason things don't workout, does anyone have an extra ride they're planning on bringing out that they might let a fat old guy ride. I'm bringing the KLR and the WF250 for my kids to ride but I may need a ride. Don't really care what it is. If not than me and the kids will share. I'll spend time with my family while they ride, then my oldest will spend time with his family while ride. Any way we'll make it work and have a blast!!
If you cant get it together, you can borrow Danielles F650. As long as you don't try Bear moutnain in the mud :evil? I does not have aggresive tires, but I will be on my GS, so looking for a bit easier than the single track. Maybe we can ride together.
That could work Jacin. Thanks. Not looking to ride hard anyway. My oldest is a brand new rider so we'll keep it pretty easy.
It would be kinda fun to ride something I've never ridden before. I'll keep you posted on the progress on the Tiger.
Hey Dan I'm coming down with my KLR and DR400 so we should have sompin extra to ride anybody talked to Gerry lately?
the DR has a FMF dynojet kit in it and sucks alot of gas the orig jet appears to be 142.5 no clue what jet is in now
plan to leave it as is I think a race with another 400 (Gerry) will help me figure out if it works ok
Hey All -
Just curious. Are we allowed to have fires at Deerfield or is the area under restrictions?
Think I'll come down via Devils Tower- never been there.
Wacked
No open fires anywhere in the Hills. Full fire ban in affect the last I knew.
The road that passes by Devil's Tower is a nice road and fun ride as far as ashalt goes. There are also some good rides on gravel through the Bearldge area of the hills. Ride safe.
Dang, Brad,.....trying to figure out how to ride from Devils Tower with you since it's kinda in my back yard,....but....the wife unit doesn't want to pull the camper through the hills so I have to drive. You can get from the Tower to Deerfield 98% off pavement.
Also, a few people asking about extra rides, the wife's CRF230L will be sitting idle for a good share of the time. It's kinda small but it's a blast to ride. I take her for a day of gravel road riding, other than that it should be available to use.
Anyone have a tally of how many are coming? Where PlumberMike been? Snooker? Gerryeye? I know Josh opted for a wedding instead of fun, whatever...
Josh.......the guy has no sense of priority. ;D
Maybe we should have a moment of silence for him....
Son David finely decided to come and he's going to ride my green DRZ, so I'll be on the big pig KLR. I'm hoping Sprout doesn't show up, so I can keep up.

I have a tally in the 2nd post. As of now 17 riders and a few non-riding accomplices.
Sounds like we have a plan! My wife will bring up the chili Friday afternoon for supper. Dan let me know if your going to bring the stew so we have idea how much chili to make. Or, if you, or anyone else just want to bring the fixings, cheese, plastic spoons, and paper bowls let me know. LD
Hank & I will bring cheese, onions, crackers, spoons & bowls.
We'll make a pot of stew.
Gerry, glad you can make it. Sprout usually only comes to the Spring rally.
We will do sloppy joes Thursday night, might be kinda nice for those setting up camp thursday afternoon so they dont have to cook.
Thanks ORed or is it Ms Bacher!
By the way, I was talking with a co-worker today. He told me about a neat cave in that area called "Ice Cave" (Actually two others caves close by) Sounds like it might be fun to find. Also, this may take more research (probably next summer) but he asked me about an old plane crash that occurred in the 60s or 70s in the Deerfield area. He has tried to find it a couple of times with no luck. I found a web site with coords to a plane crash that happened in 1977. Not sure if its the same one, but its close to where he described. The plane is suppose to be partially intact. Who knows, maybe another adventure? LD

What kind of riding do you guys want to do? C, B, A? There are plenty of scenic C loops around Deerfield, and a few B loops. I don't know of much A stuff around Deerfield but some of the ATV trails are close.
I've been doing some scouting this week so I have a few suggestions. The first is a 90 mile scenic C loop that includes Flag Mountain lookout, the 129 overlook, the Custer photo site, Whitetail Peak, and the Castle Creek overlook. Flag Mountain and Whitetail peak are fairly well known but the other sites are not. This loop is suitable for beginners and big bikes; there are 3 slightly tougher sections but bypass routes are available for all 3.
The second is a 90 mile loop around southern Deerfield. This is a A/B loop, so tougher than the first loop. It includes Bear Mountain (I know Dan wants redemption on the Tiger), a water crossing designed to dump KLR's (added for NDave and gerry1eye), a special treat for those who like riding over lots of logs, the famous powerline trail, and some of the tougher Deerfield ATV trails at the end. The loop takes about 4-5 hours. I rode it today; it's one of the funnest rides I've had this year. Fun on a DRZ or smaller, doable on a KLR, challenging on a bigger bike.
The third is a 160 mile loop around Custer and Deerfield. The difficulty is similar to the southern Deerfield loop, but longer. There's almost no pavement, and not much gravel, just mile after mile of trails. I think it's the coolest route I've ever put together in the Hills, but maybe a bit taxing for most of us weekend warriors. This would be an all-day ride.
So... what do you want to ride?
I'm up for more B, C riding as I may be on a borrowed machine or the Tiger. If I were riding the WR or even the KLR I'd be up for a little more challenge.
Option 2, the 90 mile loop sounds like fun to me. I'm not sure about fuel range though. I'll be riding a new to me 03 WR450 and I don't really know how far it can go. 90 is pushing it though I bet.
I'm sure one of the super tankers will riding along!
Bummed I can't make it this time around - just too much going on at work, and on the family front. Have a blast guys, and I hope to see you all next spring!
Greatbuffalo - if you wanna mount up the brand new rear I got in my shed, you're welcome to take my WRR, she ain't been ridden all year and she's kinda sad about it.
Be careful G Buff, you might not wanna go back! And, that one's been crash tested.
Yeti, Sport Faller, Ancient Mariner, Dr P.... geez... won't be the same w/out you guys.
Yeti, you should at least blast out and say "hi" and have a beer!
All of those look like a great time. 90 plus miles! looks like I would be putting gas in the backpack!!!
I am counting 19, if Ryani comes thats an even 20. Ryani, are you in? This should eb a nice weekend. Sounds like a fun bunch(as if it ever isn't) and great weather. New territory should be nice. I appreciate everyones bringing food. Maybe we need to raise a barn or something.... ;)
Loingrader, how old are your kids? maybe that will get the wife more interested in coming for a visit. My kids always get bored around a group of adults talking bikes. It's wierd.
FYI, there is a frost advisory for tonight. Sheesh!
Well folks, the Tiger has other issues...........
I read that if the Tiger Stator goes out the likelyhood of the Voltage regulator going out at the same time is fairly high. That is what happened. I tested one bad leg on the stator so I know it was bad, I'm not charging now so I'm assuming that the VR is out as well. I need to get one of those ordered. I was hoping for the best but the best didn't arrive.
Now....I've had several offers for borrowed bikes and the last one sounds like fun. So Yeti, where do you live? Will you be home tomorrow or will someone be there. Do you have (stupid question time) the tools to do the swap at your place? Or could it be trailered to the camp and swapped out there with some help from the other guys? I think I'll pick it up and trailer it to the camp and have Nathaniel ride the KLR out to camp cause I only have a 2 place trailer, but that would work good.
Yeti, I'll send you a PM with my # and you can call me at your leisure and we can talk about it. Thanks
That bike would be a hoot!
I'm sorry to lead you guys on. haha. It looks like you guys will have a great time! Unfortunately I will be having the opposite....wedding. Need I say more.
I will be a fixture at future rides. You can count me in
Yup, 19 matches my count (post 2) as well. Oredenbacher and I will be there late tomorrow, probably midnight. If someone wants to pick out a tent site for us and post it here that would be cool, so we're near the group. It would save us driving around in the dark figuring out what to do!
Quote from: greatbuffaloNow....I've had several offers for borrowed bikes and the last one sounds like fun.
Uh-oh Dan. Don't ride a WRR unless you wanna buy one. 275 lbs. dry, EFI, wide ratio six speed, does a decent job on single track, and...
Stock engine, 20k miles. Course it helps the top speed if the rider is 165 lbs. ;D
Quote from: HankI'm not sure about fuel range though.
We could cut it down to 70-80 miles, the zigzag trail that touches the Wyoming border is just a logging trail so not the greatest thrill anyway.
See you Friday...

No, I do not. She's gonna need an oil change too...been over a year since the last. Only takes about a quart and a half though. Don't worry about the filter. Yamalube is what I usually use.
Quote from: greatbuffalo on September 12, 2012, 05:49:53 PMOr could it be trailered to the camp and swapped out there with some help from the other guys?
Best guess? I would say someone there (Hank) will have the tools & skills to change a rear tire. ;)
Quote from: greatbuffalo on September 12, 2012, 05:49:53 PMYeti, I'll send you a PM with my # and you can call me at your leisure and we can talk about it. Thanks
That bike would be a hoot!
I'll give you a call tomorrow morning.
I will have irons and a pump along, but changing a tubed tire trail/camp side should never be done voluntarily! Bloody knuckled, tube pinching, cuss fest... I imagine it has bead locks too, which really make for some fun.
Is there a dealer nearby? Might be the best $25 ever spent.
That said you can sure use my stuff and I'll be happy to help.
I'll give Dave a call and see if we can do it at his place. if not, I think we can handle it at camp. Oil change is the only concern about where to put the oil. Dave knows WRs too.
who is riding what Saturday? I may be able to make it up for the day (?) I will bring the 300 if someone wants to ride single track, otherwise the 990.
Talked with Lonesome Dave this morning and he's coming over to pick up the WRR, get the tire changed, and get the oil changed. She'll be all ready for you Dan! Enjoy!!
He said the tire mount would only be about $15, I dunno about the oil change.
If you drop it, I don't mind any small scratches & dings you may give her, but if you break anything major it's on you, deal?? :)
Hey everyone...........
I'm in Rapid and will show up at Mountain Meadow on the XR650 about 9:00am. Is that early enough?

Won't make it this time but you all have fun now!
I'm having fun reading the posts but can't make it due to Fall reality. I even have to attend a "Gala" tonight (grind teeth). New Interns, students, etc. I did get out last week to the Chengwatana State Forest for some trail riding. Not bad, but lots of water. Didn't see anyone there all day with exception of some guy digging around the local garbage containers. Fall colors are starting.
Have a great time all!
