Title: Roadtrip spring 2014 Any interest?
Post by: greatbuffalo on January 01, 2014, 10:55:57 PM
Hey all,

I've been thinking the past few days that I am ready for a roadtrip to somewhere. A fewf places that come to mind are: Northeast New England area, Glacier Nat Park, Colorado, Utah, Mississippi corridor, among others.

My idea is to do the Spring rally and then shoot from there for another week or ten days. I think Colorado could be sketchy in the higher altitudes in the spring so a later date may be better.

I'm really up for any ideas and company on this trip. Don't really care where to or who with, just got the itch to get out.

The only "rule" is very little or no interstate riding. Secondary, gravel, and anything in between.

New England is home for me so I know lots of places and cheap (free) places to crash.

Anyone interested??

Wish I was there to participate. That sounds like a great time. It is always hard to find someone to ride a long trip with. When Josh and I rode to Moab to meet the group, it was an adventure of weather for sure, but a trip I will always remember. That time of year will be tough for the Rockies, but Glacier and Montana in general had some of the best roads I have ever ridden.

Cant wait to hear ride reports of this.

I would love to do it! Unfortunately I can't commit right now? I have a Colorado trip planned the first week of June and not sure I can get another one in before that?

No need for commitments now, there's plenty of time for that. Just would like to get a discussion going about the possiblities and see what comes out in the wash.

And like I said, I'm not locked into the spring, if something came together for july or even August, that would work. Or even a Fall ride for that matter. I just found myself reviewing last year and realized I wasted a whole year of doing very little. I've decided that ain't gonna happen this year.

The last couple of years, I have pulled the bike out of storage and after checking the air in the tires, ridden straight to Utah. I mix in a great deal of street, but do some dual road on the Continental Divide on the way through Wyoming and especially around Moab (I love Onion Creek and camping on the river is a treat). Last year I did pieces of the Utah Backcountry Discovery route then headed to Vegas for two nights and home. I usually go the last week of May and try to time my ride with the races in Salt Lake.   Lots of fun, the weather can be a challenge, but worth every minute. I also alternate camping with hotels. I will most probably go again this year as well. Getting time off is always an adventure.

PS  Due to the unchecked draconian liberal lawmakers in Colorado, I choose to boycott each and every road in that state.

Well I think I've made some contact with a couple other riders to do part of the Great Divide ride in July. We'll see how those plans come together.

I may consider other adventures along with the GDR that are 4-6 days in length.

You see, after last summer I've made a New Years resolution. No I'm not going on a diet or taking Yoga. I've just decided that:
Work less, Travel more..

Hi Greatbuffalo,

Any interest in riding the Dakota Adventure Loop either before or after the spring rally?

Tom

That may be an idea. I'll have to double check my time off from work, don't remember how much time I took off.

I'll check my schedule and kick a few things around and get back to you.

Tom,

I think that would be an idea. Doing it before the rally would work best for me.

We can figure out a date for you to blow into Mitchell and we can meet up and head West to do the route.

Wonder if anyone else is game to do the ride.

Before the rally works best for me also.

Dan,

The June rally is only 5 weeks away, are you still interested in riding all or part of the Dakota Adventure Loop before the rally?

I did not post in on ADV, but I will.   It's never gathered much response there, but I'll give it a shot again.

I threw up a link to it in last years thread you made. May want to start a new one.

Hipster, Yup still planning to give it a shot and get some or all of it done, depends on the weather as to how excited I am and how much I may want to do. I don't want to end my rally before it begins like some of your travel mates did last year. Bogus Jim expressed a bit of interest as well if he can get some time off.

We'll hammer out some plans in a couple weeks.

Trying to get the plans for the prerally DAKAL ride planned. If anyone else is interested please let me know.

Roughly the plan is, and by all means, is not cast in stone. Its more like jotted down in pencil.

With the Rally starting on Thursday the 19th, I was thinking about meeting Hipster somewhere between Mitchell and the hills, where ever works for him, on Friday the 13th or Saturday the 14th. Begin the loop in the Deadwood area on Sunday the 15th. They say the loop take 4 days to run. therefore we would finish the loop on Wednesday in Deadwood to be there for the Rally on Thursday.

Like I said, I'm kinda pullin' this from my rectum and any or all involved can weigh in. I am up to adjusting the schedule to accommodate plans to shorten the ride or any other ideas others have. This was initially proposed by Hipster so he'll likely have his own ideas and we'll wait on his reply.

If you are not familiar with this route, here is the link.     http://shop.stridersports.com

Anyone interested in this ride can post here and we'll try to get this nailed down the end of the weekend.

Just did a bit more reading on the "official" site, which was down the other day when I was doing some planning. They are saying a longer period of time for this ride,6-7 days. I think if we just start and see how far we get in the 4 days allotted. What do you think?
Title: Re: Roadtrip spring 2014 Any interest?
Post by: Bogus Jim on May 23, 2014, 10:06:59 AM
I think 6-7 days might be required if you stop at all the attractions and look around, etc. 4-5 days would be a normal pace with a few photo stops. I'm still hoping to tag along but the route and pace is up to Dan and Tom since they're the guests here.

I came through Edgemont on the way home from Arizona and the Cheyenne river depth seemed really low. That was puzzling since most of the other creeks are so full here. The route has a long backtrack if you can't make the river crossing so we could skip that if you want.

Bogus, back from Arizona? How was that bike on the way back? I'm bloody jealous!
Hope the trip was good.

Dan, I could meet you in Mitchell on Sunday June 15.  Jim, are you also located in the Mitchell area?

What bikes will you guys be riding?  I'll be on my KTM 990, so I'll have to be careful if the river crossings get a little deep, that thing will sink like a rock.

Tom, I'm taking my KLR. A bit slow on the road, but I'll try to keep up with you on the road. I'm thinkin' about putting on a bigger sprocket for the ride out and changing before the loop ride. Sunday sounds good. If the water is too deep, we just go around.

Jim is in Rapid.

Guess I'll be a no-show for the Great Buffalo DAKAL ride. I'm taking 2 weeks in August to ride WY / CO with my brother and after checking, I don't quite have enough vacation left this year to take a week in June as well. Maybe I'll take a day off and ride with you guys for a day at least.
