Well don't keep us in suspenders!  What are you going to get?

This:

Yamaha WR250R

Nice shootout here from some ADVrider guys, including two KLRs and a 950:

One of the biggest threads on ADVrider is all about the WRR:
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329337

Lotsa videos on Youtube, this one is some guy showing off with it on an MX track. Kinda amazing what this bike can do, and still (reportedly) comfortably cruise down the slab at 70mph.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wID5IeCc3Xs&feature=fvsr

I have yet to ride, or even sit on one, so I don't really know if it will fit my Yeti body, but everything I've read is encouraging...it has a 36.6" seat height. Got a date with BH Powersports this Saturday.

In my humble, and not asked for opinion, your 950 will be missed.  Seems to me that most of your riding is moderate trails where it does great.  Do you really want a bike that is better in mud and rocks at the expense of all the 950 is good at?  Are rocks and mud really THAT fun on ANYTHING?    If you think you'll take a bath on the 950 when you sell it, take the 1K (or whatever) you'll lose, keep the 950, and pick up a 1991 DR350 for thrashing thru mud and rocks, then you can have the best of both worlds!

Your opinion is always appreciated! I probably will miss the 950, but right now, I'm REALLY missing the ability to "go where no man has gone before".  ;D  I think the reason most of my riding is on moderate trails is because of the bike I'm on. I really do enjoy the technical stuff, I just do not enjoy wrestling the 950 through it.

I know I will not miss the $$$$ maintenance on the KTM. I'm not nearly as good with the wrenches as you guys are and the KTM really intimidates me.  I just paid ~$600 for a major service on the 950!  :o  I'm pretty sure I can do any service on the little 250 by myself (can you say 10 minute oil changes?)....the 950 just scares me!

after brandon walked that little ttr225 of my sisters thru the hills last fall, he swears that he'll get a 250 dual sport bike someday.  they just make it so much easier.  lighter, easier to pick up, and maintenence on those smaller bikes is always cheaper and more simple.  i think you're heading the right direction yeti (but hank has a point about an old dr350 too).

Picked up the WRR yesterday morning, took it home and made a few adjustments to the bars, shifter, brake pedal and suspension, then went out and rode all day!  This thing is a friggin' blast!!  Sorry, no pics yet.

Compared to the 950, this bike just flat out ROCKS in the dirt! Not too bad on the road, either. I actually prefer the clean air that no fairing allows.  Will cruise at 70-75 without a problem, and rails through the twisties as long as you keep the revs up.  It's a bit buzzy right now, but I've got new bars and anti-vibe risers waiting to be put on tonight.  The seat is torture after 4-5 hours, but I'll get a Renazco ASAP.

I think I'm not gonna miss the 950 too bad...more comfy on-road, but I never do a lot of that, and easier to haul stuff.  I'll be getting some luggage for the WR, and should be able to carry all my camping gear.  Other than that, the WR is a lot more fun once you leave the road.  I'm gonna need to change the front sprocket, but it will tractor around the slow stuff easily (with some slipping of the clutch right now).  But, where it really shines is when you get to the top half of the powerband...holy SH*T!

I took it through some trails that I was very familiar with, and everywhere I went, the little bike out performed the 950 in just about every aspect.  The 950 feels more planted in turns just because it's so heavy, but I only have one day of experience on the WR, I'm sure I'll get better at handling it....I noticed quite a difference just from the morning to the afternoon.  The thing that surprised me most was that the WR took me everywhere off-road FASTER THAN THE 950! The WRR seems kinda tame until you get the revs way up there, then it just screams!  Too much fun!

Already got to take off on some trails I would NEVER have taken the 950.  Got stuck on one little single track at a dead-end, and was able to turn around by just lifting the front end and "scooting" it around a foot at a time, and I was outa there!  Woulda been screwed on the 950.

I think I'm really gonna love this bike.   ;D

Got some more time on the WRR today.  Put on new tires (D606s) and a smaller front sprocket.

The smaller sprocket TOTALLY killed the road-ability of the bike.  :-\  Can barely make 75mph wrapped out in sixth gear!  (Downhill, with a tailwind)  :-[  Threw the speedo WAY off! Not sure if I wanna stay with the new 12t front.  Makes first gear almost useless except for the most technical parts.  Might just leave the 13t on and only use the 12t during DDSR rallies!   :evil

Bars are VERY buzzy.  Put on my Rox risers and Grip Puppies (foam grip covers), helped a bit, but still too buzzy.  I got a new set of high-bend bars, too, and tried to install them today. But with the risers, the cables just won't reach.   >:(

The seat REALLY sucks!   :o  My ass is sore after about 1 hour..after 2, it's just torture...gotta stand up as much as possible, which is a lot more comfortable after I installed the risers!   ;)

Still lovin' the WRR, though....this thing makes me go TOO fast off-road.  Had more than a few "moments" today....it's just soooo easy to go really fast through anything on this bike!   ;D

Oh yeah...did an oil change today...10 mintues!! ;D

as easily as it is to swap sprockets, this makes sense to me.

buzzy bars, 2x4 seats.  welcome to the dirt bike world my friend.

isn't easy maintenence awesome!

can't wait to ride with you this fall on your new bike.

Rode the WRR for about 4 and a half hours today...and I got the monkey butt to show for it!!   :-X

I went out intending to hit that trail you (Brett) took us on last year out of Silver City.  Remember this?

There was no naps this time around!  And, when I made it to the top (I took the "easy" route) I didn't feel like my heart was gonna explode...in fact, I was barely winded.  It's amazing the difference 250 pounds makes.

I may have spoke too soon about the road-ability...I think I lost highway-ability, but the bike still rocks through the backroad twisties.  After the trails I did today, I'm keeping the 12t on...came in handy more than once.

oh yea, i remember.

if your bike will do 60, that's all the road ability it needs for the type of riding you do.  throw the 13t back on if you want to take a road trip.

The 250's are great bikes. I have a KLX and a DR. They make trail riding fun which is the reason I ride. Last time I checked riding 3 hours of slab - not fun.
The best accessory I have bought for it was a nice trailer to haul it down those 3 hours of slab. I hope you really enjoy the new bike.

Got a buddy of mine willing to sell me his single-bike trailer for cheap, but I got nowhere to put it...would love to have it, though.  Maybe I could store in Brian's front yard.   ;D :evil

all you need is a reciever hitch, dirtbike mount to haul that little thing.  they work awesome, you don't have to license it or worry about tires and lights, and they don't take up much space when not in use.

Was reading up on those at elementownersclub.com (my car), and apparently they don't recommend exceding 250lbs. on the hitch...the WRR is ~300lbs.   :-[

I think that might be tounge weight? I could be wrong but check the towing capacity. If you haul it on a trailer the tounge weight should be very little as long as your not using a 16ft car trailer ;D

Today
-Pilot Knob

I went up Pilot Knob today.  My first time.  All I could think was, "Holy shit!  Brian took some guy on a V-strom through this??!!"

I tried to take my 950 up there last year...had to turn around.

The WRR sailed through with flying colors!

I was a bit winded at times, and had to paddle through a couple of rocky spots...but I made it without a drop!

Tomorrow

Today
-Camp 5

What a difference!! There were still a couple spots I had to dab/paddle my way through...but, NO drops!!  This bike almost feels like cheating.   :evil

I only went one-way, I couldn't find the trail that comes back around.  I know you can ride Camp 5 in a loop...but I couldn't find it.  I came up the backside from Galena and found a REALLY hairy downhill, maybe worse than the one behind (was it Wild Bill's?) campground.  I had to tip-toe my way down for about a 1/4 mile...was not fun at the time, but made me grin when I got down.   ;D

where was that one suicide hill that caused me to scratch my little cream puff barbie klr and break a mirror off?  was that camp 5?  there was a pretty big hill climb that you didn't take your katoom up, and then a little farther up there was a REALLY steep hill with a rocky outcropping at the top.  flex tried it and failed, as did i.  you find that hill yeti and give it a shot on your wr.  it will give you a run for the money.  i'd love to try that thing on my kdx this fall.

Yeah, that hillclimb I didn't take the 950 up is at the very start of Camp 5 (Boulder Canyon entrance), gonna have to try that next time I'm up there. Forgot about that when I came out of Camp 5 on Sunday.  Is that where you broke your mirror?

I also just remembered that trail right before the runaway truck ramp coming down 385 into Deadwood.  I had to turn around on the 950 before the hillclimb.  I'll have to conquer that one as well!   8)

not the first hill, but another hill that you can see a little ways to the left after you go up the first hill (at the entrance).  that is where i broke my mirror.  it is quite a steep friggin hill.

that road off 385 by the truck ramp will be a lot of fun on the wr too.  starts and ends pretty tame but it has a few hairy spots in the middle.

So, last weekend I went through Camp 5 (again), then attempted the hill that broke loingrader's mirror.  I stared at it a REAL long time, but just couldn't work up the nads to attempt it alone...DEFEATED!

Just to the left of that hillclimb, there's another slightly less intimidating hillclimb leading to the top of the same hill, I took that one. Almost didn't make it, had to downshift to first mid-hill.  Once to the top, there's a great single track following the edge of the canyon.  It comes REAL close to the edge in a couple spots providing some good pucker factor!

Feeling down cuz I chickened out, I headed for that trail right before the runaway truck turn-off on 385 determined to conquer.  Got back in there without a problem, but when I got to the first big hillclimb, I only made it halfway up before I got stopped by a real big rock.  I got off and walked up the hill a ways, then decided I'd better not try that one alone either...DEFEATED AGAIN!  Turned tail and creeped back out to the highway.

I guess I'm just a bit too conservative to try some of those hills alone. For the first time, at least.  Once I tackle this stuff with a wingman, I'm sure I'll be confident enough to go solo.

This little bike really takes it out of me!  I find that I'm pretty well exhausted after almost every ride.  Doesn't really hit me until I get home though. Don't really notice it while I'm still riding, which could be a bad thing I guess, if I let it go too far.  Sometimes I forget how old and decrepit I am.   :-\

I'm anxious to see these hills (and try them on the drz).  Probably not a bad plan to play it a little conservative when you're solo!   It might suck laying out on a rocky hill with a broken ankle..

I don't remember these hills? I remeber the one scuba spilled on on that area and farther down the road I remember one that Brett tried to ride up but turned around because of the little rock face near the top. No matter, it will be a good time either way.

That one that Scuba went down on, I haven't been able to find.  The one I chickened out on was the one Brett turned around on (I think).  We simply HAVE to do Pilot Knob!   :evil

Title: The Yeti Goes Down!
Post by: The Yeti on September 08, 2009, 12:43:37 PM
After a great afternoon of riding last Saturday with excess on his Husaberg, I was worn out and took a day off from riding on Sunday.  Then things went real bad on Monday afternoon for me...

After a very quick run through Camp 5, excess & I conquered the hill at the Boulder Canyon Camp 5 entrance!  This is excess, he had a bit of a moment at the top where those two rocky steps are, but otherwise he made it look easy:

(http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn213/Promo_Yeti/WRR%20Stuff/th_IMGP2390.jpg) (http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn213/Promo_Yeti/WRR%20Stuff/?action=view&current=IMGP2390.flv)

I went next, and the steps gave me a bit of a stutter, but no drops!

We were really hauling ass through the rocky sections of Camp 5 and my arms were screaming at me the next day.   :evil

So, on Monday, I went out off Neck Yoke rod to my favorite "close to home" play area.  I was really in the zone, riding better than ever, taking turns faster, catching a lot of air, and generally just having a blast, until....

I came over a berm carrying a bit too much speed (@ 30mph), landed on the crest of two ruts, front end washed out into the rut, and I went down hard on the left side.

After the dust settled, the first thing I noticed was a lot of pain coming from my left pinky finger.  Ripped off my gloveand my finger looked about 1/4" shorter and about 1/2" fatter!  :o  Dislocated.  Man, that hurts!

Tried to yank it back into place...not a good idea, hurt like hell, and didn't work anyway.  Lifting up a bike is no fun with a dislocated finger, let me tell you.

So, I get the bike uprgiht and notice the bars are tweaked way to the left.  Oh well, I can ride with crooked bars. So, I put my gloves back on (OUCH!)  ands get on the bike.  Start 'er up, put it in gear, let the clutch out...no go!  WTF??   Well, bars were bent out of shape so bad, the clutch cable was stretched so far that it wouldn't allow the clutch to engage.  Back off the bike, take the gloves back off (OUCH!), and get out the toolbox and go to work on the bars (OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!).  Get the bars straight enough so the clutch would engage and rode about 20 miles home.  Every time I had to stop, my finger was getting more and more swollen, along with my hand, making it very difficult to pull in the clutch (F%$$^^$ OUCH!).

Made it home, went to urgent care and the x-rays confirmed no break, so the doc numbed up my finger (THANK YOU!) and yanked it back in place.  Still hurts a lot today, wearing a splint.

Also, got a little road rash on my left elbow and shoulder from my pressure suit (thank goodness I was wearing all my gear!).

So, anyone ever dislocate a finger?  How loing 'til I'll be able to ride at 100% again??  I'd hate to miss the upcoming rally because of this...   :'( :'( :'(

I gather, from reading on the inter-web, that I'm supposed to keep this splint on for two weeks...is 11 days close enough ??? :evil

You know you gotta take everything you read on the internet with a grain, but from what I've read, looks like about 6 weeks before I can expect significant range of motion...may never be 100% again.   :'(  Oh well, it's the price you pay for the fun these bikes provide!  ;D ;D ;D

Maybe, just maybe, I'm getting too old for this sh*t ???

J/K...first thing I said to my wife when she got home tonight was "Honey, I know you don't wanna hear this, but I CAN'T WAIT to get back on the bike"...not so surprisingly, she understands.   ;D  I really love that lady.  :-*

The in-laws came up with a 200cc three wheeler and I loaned them my "work" 400cc ATV and took them out and showed them a few local trails. I was on the XR (because the cat clogged the exhaust on the BMW and the new pipe is on order) Every time I shifted to second I would lose them and have to stop and wait. They went out alone and got lost which was the only time I had a spirited ride this weekend. I'm looking forward to the rally. If you need someone to ride your bike for you while you prepare meals for the riders back at camp just let me know ;D :D ::) Tape that f@#$%^& finger to the next good finger and ride the hell out of that WR. I will stop and help you pick it up if need be(after I take a picture :evil)

See you all in 2 weeks

Mike

So, I know you're a pharmacist (right?)...is this your professional opinion, or your motorcycle rider opinion?   ;)

Trust us! We are professionals ;D If you want we can get a doctor to tell you to go ride...or just hang it up altogether. Sell me the WR and I'll be on the hunt for a mid 90's Park Avenue for you get around.

it's what i would do.   ;D

sometimes what i would do and what i recommend someone else do are two different things.  in this case, they are the same.  as a rider, pharmacist, and one who was involved in contact sports for many years, i say tape that sucker up and ride away.

Pics of the carnage!   :P

This is moments after the crash:

And the obligatory x-ray:

I don't have any current pics of the finger, but it looks very colorful!!  And my whole hand is very puffy.

Carnage to the bike:

I got my bars straightened back out.  It looked like the bar mounts (on the triple tree) were just spun about a 1/4" out of square, so I squared them up and tightened back down. My risers were all kinds of outa shape, but were easy to true-up again.  Doesn't look like the bars themselves got bent at all.  My left side hand-guard spun around on the bars so it was pointing almost straight up (kinda disappointed with the way the Zeta guards mount up, and obviously didn't protect my hand as much as I'd hoped).  My left side fairing got busted up pretty good.  Broke a tab that connected it to the bike, so I drilled a couple holes and zip-tied 'er on!  Ripped of the back left turn signal...I had a spare on hand and replaced it quickly. My shifter got bent in, I bent it back out.  My turn signal switch's push-to-cancel is not working very well anymore, feels like something got broke in there. I have to push it three or four times to get it to work.  My fender pack fell off during the crash, and I thought I had it strapped back on, but I lost it somewhere on the ride back to town after the crash, with my tire irons and spare tube in it.   :'(

Since the bars got tweaked so hard, is there anything I should look out for when I (ever) get to ride it again as far as the front end being out of whack?  Should I worry about the shifter not being as strong after the bend in/bend out procedure?

You might want to loosen up your axle bolt (or carriers), and compress the front end vigorously a few times, then tight the axle back up.   KTM recommends a procedure like that for squaring things up...  Do  you have a copy of your KTM manual yet?   Although if it feels straight when you're riding, it's probably fine.

As far as the shifter, I guess I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Your finger looks tough in that picture!!!

Oh and I gotta give you Kudos for actually stopping to take a picture of your finger.  That makes me laugh...  I can say with a fair amount of certainty that a picture would have been the last thing on my mind at that particular moment.

I think the adrenaline took over at that point, I wasn't feeling a lot of pain, plus the last thing I wanted to do was pick up that bike!  :o  I took about a 2 minute breather before I even attempted.

In this pic, you're probably saying, "those ruts don't look so bad".  Keep in mind, I slid probably 10+ feet after hitting the ground.  The bike slid a bit less.

X2. Wow :o

Now where do you think the pack might be. I could ride out and look for you if you think there is a chance of finding it before someone else finds it.

Thanks for the offer.   It fell off somewhere on the highlighted trail, X marks the spot of the crash (I think, coulda been a bit closer to the exit of the trail, on 718 which is a gravel road, but if you get to where the X is, you've went too far).

Went out for a little test ride this morning.  I rode out to the trail where I lost my pack...no luck.   :'(

I found myself quite gun-shy.  Anything approaching technical conditions had me backing WAY off, even paddling through a few spots I would have blasted through on the throttle just a couple weeks ago.   >:(  The sore hand gave me a little trouble on rocks, but otherwise I can definitely ride, just gotta avoid any big smacks to the handlebars (OUCH!).  So, no Camp 5, Pilot Knob, or any such other rocky conditions for me this weekend.  That's alright, looks like we may have a couple big bikes I can lead around on the easier stuff.   :P  I'm really bummed out about this, but really nothing I can do.  I don't want to re-injure the hand and prolong the healing process, so it is what it is.

I also noticed something today I didn't see after the crash.  On the left side of my bike, towards the back, there WAS a helmet lock (never used it).  It was completely sheared off during the crash!  Some big forces going on there...I'm really surprised I came out of it without more injuries.

Still looking forward to having a ton of fun with you guys!  See you all tomorrow.

Went out this afternoon for a few hours. I think I got about 90% of my confidence in the bike back.  When a bike (seemingly) let's you down (more likely, operator error), it always seems to take me awhile to trust the bike again. That process was pretty quick today!  ;D The hand feels good, might even be able to tackle some rocks after all.  :evil

Yeti, where did you get the skid plate on your wr250? i would like to get mine set up during the winter so that i dont have it down during the riding season. Do you have a good source for aftermarket parts for your bike?

Hmmm...y'know, I can't remember where I got the skidplate off the top of my head.  I'll have to look at my email when I get home and let you know.

I don't have a single source for aftermarket parts. I'm sure you've seen the giant thread on the WRR over on ADVRider...if not, start reading now and you MIGHT be done by spring.  ;D

Here's a great source for reviews and stuff:

And this is a WRR specific forum:

Welcome to the forum, BTW!  I'm thrilled to see another WRR owner here!!  How long you had yours?  When the weather clears up we'll have to get out for a ride.

Congrats on the WRR! Is it brand new? Looks like it.  Let the farkling begin!  ;D  When you get some seat time, let us know what you think about it compared to your KLR. Did you keep the KLR still?

I also like your garage!  Bikes all over, some in various states of disassembly.  Seems familiar :)

I sold the KLR, I loved it but I couldn't justify keeping it with the new bike. It is a new 09' I just picked it last weekend, and I haven't had a chance to put any miles on it yet. I am ready for spring to get here it is too cold for me. I was looking at a KTM 450 EXCR but after reading a lot of reports online including yours I decided to get the WRR, I don't think I will regret it!

Thanks guys I really like the looks of the bike I think it will be a lot of fun. Yes my garage is a mess right now, my 1150GS needed some upgrades this winter, the PO did some shade tree mechanizing on it so I am trying to reverse engineer some of the work. And it has been a long process. I had both the wheels sent out to Woody's Wheel Works in Denver for re-trueing, and they came back last week so I am hoping to get it all buttoned up tomorrow.
