Most likely riding the Katoom.
Plan to head out from Watertown early Thursday, coming back early Sunday.

Hoping to bring 1 or 2 guys w/ me from Watertown, but neither are 100%

One of you admins need to update the subforum name with the fall rally dates now that they seem to be decided.

I put up some info on ADVRider:

Well Yeti, I think I'll come out Friday instead of Thursday.  Gives you an extra day of healing, and it sounds like that's pretty much everyone's plan.   I'm still riding solo.   I'll probably leave pretty early and take my time.

What time does everyone plan on showing up Friday?   I imagine it will be 4-5 pm before I get there.

Sounds like a plan, I'll come up late afternoon on Friday.  Of course, this is all depending on the state of my injury...  >:(  Going to see an orthopedist tomorrow morning.   :P

I got official medical clearance to ride!   ;D  Mostly, to pacify the wife, but makes me feel better about it.  So, I'm IN for the rally!  Not sure how much of the rough stuff I can handle, my hand is like one big bruise and still hurts when I grip anything.  Hopefully 7 days will make a big difference.

Dustin is in PA on an installation until next Wed, so I think he's out.    (he works for a bunch of jerks    :evil )
Plus he and his wife just had another little one.   His bike is sitting in the shop though... hmmm

Who knows, maybe he'll surprise us.   I wish I could get someone from wtn to ride w/ me.   It's going to be a long lonely haul on my DRZ by myself.   I wish I could trailer it out behind my blackbird  :)

I did talk to Ryan too.  I think he's going to make it, but not sure for how many days.

Good news on the finger!

Hank - Just put my KLR and your DRZ in the back of the truck and I'll change my flight to Rapid City... Mamma will never know!  :P  I'll tell her I had to stay a couple extra days. Oh the company car would get stranded in Minneapolis -- Damb!.

Maybe next year! Hopefully have my GSA by then. No camp 5 though.  :evil

Actually he could take the KTM too.

i'll probably get to fish n fry around 1pm on friday...

Yeah, fingers crossed that the weather holds out!

I plan on being to the F&F mid-afternoon on Friday.  I really hope my hand doesn't keep me off the more technical trails...will just have to wait and see.

I plan on bringing some food for at least one meal.  Got a big batch of chili and nachos!  :eat  I hope someone else has a way to heat this stuff up, 'cause I don't.  I'm towing my bike this time around (got me a slick little bike trailer), so I'll have room for lots of food, camping gear, and (most importantly) BEER!  :chug

If any of you locals need something hauled up, let me know before Friday.

Looks like no Ryan this time, which is another bummer.

On the up side, the weather should be absolutely perfect!

I plan to leave once the sun is up.   I really don't know how long it will take, but I'd guess I'll be there mid-later afternoon.  I think I'll take 212 out most of the way, 14/34 is under construction.  I might do a little wandering on the way and the DRZ isn't real comfortable above 65 for long periods.

Thanks again for the offer Bret!

Welcome... I can't speak for the others, but if someone shows up and wants to ride, who am I to say no. I think with the Yeti hurt he might like a little easier ride as well. Plenty of good trails that won't kill a Wee. Looking forward to meeting you ;D

You might have the only big bike, but I wouldn't worry about it.    We've also got a weestrom coming and we'll ride a pretty wide variety of terrain.

Had I known there would be other big bikes I might have ridden my 950 out, but I'm pretty committed on the 400 now.

I haven't been to one of these rallies do you guys normally go out for breakfast? It's easy for me to bring something cause i live like 6 miles from the campground.

excess,

You da man!!! Quiche...just a fancy French name for egg, bacon, & cheese pie and who don't like pie and who don't like bacon?!! I, myself, learned to embellish this fine dish with a little chopped spinach to create a variant of the old "Green eggs-n-ham" theme. Besides, my wife gave me some slack about eating more vegetables when I did that. I remember my first quiche real well. I was watching Julia Child's show, "The French Chef" on public T.V. way back in the early "80's". I barely wrote anything down, just went out to the kitchen and put things together. I even used butter to create pastry dough instead of using lard to make pie dough. It turned out well. I even had enough dough left over to create raspberry tarts, using raspberry jelly just like she did on the show! It was great!!! And, it weren't no low fat/no fat kind of quiche/pie! I used farm-fresh eggs, butter, real cheese (no processed stuff), and heavy whipping cream. It was the real deal through and through!!!

Update on the Sugar Shack...I came through that way on Monday of this week (9/14/09) and I attempted to stop there back in May '09 and same thing...CLOSED on Mondays! One of us could ring them up and...Okay, just did! They are opened from 7AM-8PM on Friday and Saturday!!!! Anybody up for a Cheeseburger and fries?!!

Just got notified tonight...the stars are aligned...(drum-roll)...the initial surgery on my ole '81 XT500 was a success and she's ALLLLIIIIIIIVVVVVVEEEE! ! ! ! ! ! !

So, looks like Number Two/son, Aaron (Laramie) and I will be able to join you guys on Saturday morning. So, what time do you usually get moving around on Saturday morning? On the road by maybe 0830-0900 hours??? We would have to trailer up from the Whispering Pines/Countryside/Sheridan Lake Road area to the FnF (and you are talking about the area just past Trevino's Leathers and just before the old store and turn-off to Galena, right???) We will be riding, for lack of a better word, the less glamourous mounts of this expedition and feel no shame in riding in the rear of the pack so we don't hold anyone up. I have to be maintaining moderate throttle in order to get the break-in done on the new cylinder job she just had. We had her cleaned up inside, bored just .020 over and put a new Wiseco 10:1 piston and new valves/valve-train in. Also have a new carb coming tomorrow and hope to get it in and dialed before bed tomorrow night. Number Two and his bunch from Laramie won't get here until around mid-night tomorrow, otherwise we would come on up Friday evening. Just so you know, this will be a break-in and shake-down ride, so we hope too many pieces don't come off. Would have like to have had her in showtime prime but didn't want to miss the ride again after we had to in the Spring due to a new grandson's arrival.

So, what time should we shoot for on Saturday morning?

That's great Larry!   Use the moto-man method and break it in right!

Sounds like we might have a pretty good turnout after all.

I think 9am is a good, others please chime in!

Alright...I'll bite. What is the Moto-man method? Are you saying break it in like you plan to ride it in the future? We were concerned with not doing too much lugging of the motor and not too much racing until we had somewhere between 100-500 miles on it. What other school of thought is there on this?

Oh by the way...excess...if you'll bring the quiche then Number Two/Aaron and I will bring the apple crisp and peach/raspberry crisp. That's two whole crisps! Heck, I've even got paper plates and plastic forks already in the 4Runner! What do you say...Quiche and Crisps for Saturday breakfast?!!!

Well, that doesn't seem too off the mark after reading his article. My oldest son told me to just drive our new Toyota when I got it instead of following some slow and low break-in routine. It's a '99 Avalon and has over 190K on it right now and still keeps on ticking! He said for me to just drive like I planned to in the future. So, I will check some things over with my personal Mechanical Engineer and see about giving it a go! Thanks for the viewpoint.

I'm actually an ME too, but I don't claim to be an expert on break ins.  I do know a lot of bike guys swear by the method though.
Title: Re: Official sign up for the fall ride, Sept 17-20, 09
Post by: Crazy Uncle Larry on September 17, 2009, 09:59:25 PM
Then you and Number Two/Aaron will have something in common! He's finishing up his ME at UWYO and currently works for a developing new company doing some work on an improved carburetor design for bikes (our kind) and other applications.

LOL--The reason I mentioned about checking with him wasn't to cover the pros and cons of the method...it was to figure out how we'd tell when we had done the critical 20 miles since we are running bare minimum systems just to get to this event, i.e., that means "Houston, we have a problem! This thing is being held together by baling wire and duct-tape, over!". We haven't got a speed-o-meter between the two of us and we would just have to do this by "feel". Heck, I think I may have to pick up a couple of bicycle beep-beep horns and shake the wiring to the brake lights just to meet bare minimum qualifications for being on the road! Still got some work to get done but we just didn't want to have to "stay in the barn" while everyone else rode. Hope that makes sense. As far as the "Moto-Man" method goes, makes perfect sense to me! Just hope everyone understands about the break-in method so they don't think I'm being a knucklehead speeding up and compression-braking down! Again and again and again. Oh well, can't wait till Saturday morning! Looking forward to meeting all of you! And thanks again for sharing the wisdom/knowledge.

I think there are plenty of trails and dirt roads here that don't require all the lights and such. We can keep you guys in the middle of the pack  ;)
I have tools, barn and duct tape should the need arise.
Will there be any riding friday afternoon(tommorrow)?

Not sure if I will make it tonight, still have a 100 plus question I have to take but I will be there after the crack of dawn and I will be camping tomorrow.

If I get done in time I will head out tonight. Talked to Brian and I think he is planning on the morning. Pies look good no matter what is in them and I am all for the Sugar Shack and I believe it is open year round.

I'm editing the single track video and will upload it where you guys can get it.

Alan, please do the same of the "Hill that kicked almost everyone's ass".

I'll set up an online account somewhere so we can all share the videos in full resolution.

I got the Wee home in 3 hrs, 20 mins, 196 miles.  It was good to get there before I got drowsy.  Saw two deer at roadside in Wind Cave Park and one right on the street in Hill City between the Chute Rooster and the truck bypass.  The Wee got 56 mpg doing Rochford Rd and trail riding and 42 mpg hauling ass home against the wind.  I could have gotten home quicker on 79 instead of 385 but screw that.  Riding home did a good job of cleaning the dust off the chain.  I'm running cheap-ass 5W-40 in the Pro-Oiler and had it set at max rate for dusty running.  I want to thank you guys for picking a Wee-friendly route Saturday afternoon.  It was an absolute gas.  The tops of my thighs are a little sore from so much navigating on my hind legs.  The Wee exceeded my expectations.  I'm a little jealous of Larry because I've always wanted a TT and/or XT 500.  Those KLRs are pretty impressive but I am a little too inseam challenged for them.  I had no idea that the Black Hills were host to so many miles of superb unpavement.  All in all, it was a great experience.  Thanks, you guys!
John

Really glad you made it.  Sorry I didn't get to see you running the weestrom offroad much.   Everyone sounded very impressed with what you took it through.

Here is a 6 min. clip of the single track we did.  Some of the tight stuff is in the last minute.
My battery died about 1/4 of the way in, but I had 9 minutes of raw video.  The really nasty rocky/shale hill climbs were after I ran out of camera unfortunately.
Sucks that the camera makes it impossible to see the elevation.  Some of the climbs in the video were decently steep, but you can't see it.   You can hear the DRZ grunting in a few spots though.

Chad and Bret can really hustle those KLRs.   I was running about as fast as I wanted and Bret was waiting at every corner, and Chad was probably half bored behind me.   It was great fun, and trail 89 at the end of the single track was an absolute RIOT!

Random Yeti thoughts on the fall rally:

I think we found some great new trails this time around!  With some perfect places for the less adventurous to split off and take an easier route (not that there's anything wrong with that).  I especially enjoyed the single track excess and myself found late in the day on Saturday...I really want to explore more of that area (Silver City) when I'm not racing the sun.

The dust REALLY sucked!  Unless you happened to be lucky enough to be out front.

NOT happy with the Fish n Fry...seriously, $19 per night, per person?!  Even with the small gesture on Saturday night with the wood and beer, I think we need to look for a new home base.  Also, with us always being based at FnF, we seem to ride a lot of the same trails over & over again.  I know it's been suggested before, but I really think we should try to camp in the southern hills next time around.

The quiche ROCKED!  Even though I'd already ate, and it was a day late.   ;D

Fat Tire gives me a nasty hangover.

Jerry kicks ass on that KLR!

I really wanted to ride on Sunday, but I was very sore and tired...not the best combination for staying upright on the trail.  Call me a wuss, but I like to err on the side of caution.   :P

Awesome riding with you guys. You are all welcome to camp in our meadow anytime an can rie out of the backyard to the hill. The southern hills have alot to offer as well. Then I could actually get away an camp too. Old guys on less than ideal bikes show me that I don't need a Husaburg to have a blast(Even though I want one really bad :evil) I'm so impressed with everyones riding skills. What a good excuse to get out there and practice. Dave an Jerry need to pick a stage name and chime in on this site.Sure glad you guys came down, and I won't forget to keep those toes up ;D.Sorry I missed you sunday morning :'(
To the guys who live closer,we need to cram in a few more rides before the snow falls.
I look forward to riding with you all again.

Hey guys!

Aaron/Number Two and I had a great time this weekend. You have no idea how bad I needed to go on that ride!!! Work and such was grinding the life out of me worse than a late-night Saturday Night face-sucking zombie attack!!!! Being able to ride with you guys and my son was Aces in my book. It just about don't get no better than that on a nice Fall day like we had on Saturday. You guys made us feel right at home and I certainly appreciated your tolerance of my ride since I was still getting some of the bugs out of her after her major surgery. What you might not realize is, just last week she was in pieces and we weren't sure if I would have a ride for the Fall Rally. I even called a guy who had a '85 XT350 in the paper to see if he might rent it to me in case mine wasn't done but he had already sold it. Aaron cinched up tight and put in some major long nights to make this happen for his ole Dad! I am one lucky guy!!! He got to my house outside of Rapid City at 11PM last Friday night. We unloaded the bikes and started to work on buttoning up the ole XT500. We put on the larger Malcom Smith tank, checked and double-checked the kick lever positioning and then had to take the cover off just once more to correct the oversight of leaving a part off and changed oil and filter since he did the moto-man break-in ride earlier Friday before he headed up to Rapid City. We loosened the axle nut and tightened up the chain and tightened the foot brake a smidgeon. Okay, maybe a smidgeon too much as when the bike went through those initial whoops on Saturday and the compression sag caused brake rod movement which in-turn caused the rear brake to engage at a most inopportune moment! Glad we diagnosed this so we could continue with the ride. Okay, so maybe it was more of a W-A-G {wild ass guess} than a diagnosis! Last of all, we installed a brand-spanking new Mikuni TM36-68 pumper carburetor before coming to the rally. Ain't nothing like waiting till the last minute to put a plan together! We got the carb on and unbelievably the ole gal started without a lot of fiddling around with the settings. In fact, except for the idle, we never touched the carb and ran it like it came out of the box. I rode her up and down the neighborhood at 3:30 AM Saturday, called it quits and got in bed at 4 AM. We got back up around 6:30 AM, started her once again, loaded everything up, gassed up and headed out to meet you guys at the Fish-N-Fry by 9AM. I am definitely going to have to see about some different tires though (maybe 606's). There were several times on Saturday afternoon in the gravel, the dirt, and the dust when I was attempting to haul up the rear and I would come into one of those quick 90 degree turns real hot and could feel the front tire hanging on the verge of disaster. You know, that point when either one more ounce of throttle or one more degree of lean is going to combine with the physics of speed+mass+inability to change your trajectory to a new and necessary life-saving course thereby creating one of those significant emotional events in your life!!! You know, kind of like when "excess" met the tree on Saturday morning! I swear, I haven't experienced that much butt-pucker since the time I let Aaron/Number Two talk me into kayaking down a Class 3+ section of the Poudre River (Ft. Collins, CO) at 1100cfs flow, with a serious U-shaped hydraulic rapid, a wicked set of 4' high wave-trains, along with a boat-bashing series of rock gardens!!! I wasn't regular after that trip for 2-3 days! At least I didn't wind up on the front grill of that Dodge pick-up during my wild dash to hang in there with you guys. I was more than happy about that!!! Yeti/Alan, I wish I could have hung with you guys for the remainder of the ride on Saturday but my kitchen pass was running out! I'm sure you and 'excess'/Austin had a great time and Aaron and I would have, too! We saw you guys on 385 headed back to the camp as we were hurrying back to Rapid City in the early evening traffic.

Thanks again guys for making us feel welcome! Glad you enjoyed the peach and apple crisps! And a special thank you to Bret and John/Ancient Mariner. Bret for not making me feel like a knuckle-head for holding him up when I had trouble early on and he was riding drag. Also to Bret for helping me get my ole XT back on her feet when I fell over on the powerline hill climb (better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all) and DANG! where did all that loose rock come from?!! John here's to you for checking on me again as you rode the Weestrom back down the trail to greater clearance and a more solid footing. Appreciated that. Lastly, thanks to Aaron/Number Two for riding back down the trail and helping me get the ole beast going in the right direction, forward, ever forward. You da man, dude!

To all the rest, Chad-Jason-N.D. Dave and Jerry and Plumber Mike (Dude, we will have to get together and check out some more of your Northern Hills trails)great to meet each and everyone of you! Hey, you guys remember when the South Dakota license plates used to say "Great Faces, Great Places!" I think that pretty well sums up Saturday for me!

Have a great Fall and Winter and here's hoping Santa brings each of you the bike/ride of your dreams!!! If you've already got it, then maybe he can just drop off some new tires and other bolt-on goodies for you!!! See you around!

Sidenote-Yeti/Alan, you been out Victoria Lake Road recently? What's with the huge parking lot out by the impromptu firing range? Or, is the USFS starting to set up the parking areas for the designated ride areas that we will be told about sometime in January 2010? Just wondering if you knew. Aaron and I took a small ride out to Pactola Basin to do some gold panning before he had to head back to Laramie on Sunday. We saw it on the way back to the house. Catch you later.

I saw that to when I was out in the jeep. I assumed it was for the firing range so they could attempt to keep the shots in one place and maybe keep the shell casings there as well.

Those are some cool videos, Bret. I actually like the reverse camera angle when your cam spun around.  ;D

I really want to tackle that single track once my hand heals up.  Still can't straighten my pinky, or bend it, all the way....at least I can type now without too much pain.  My fall on Saturday kinda re-injured it...swelling was almost gone, now it's back to icing it at night.   >:(

Those are good.   I like the one where the camera spins around too.. pretty funny stuff.

The turns signal lens I found looks just like the ones that come on a KLR ;D not mine because mine just don't break even if it is wedged against a tree.

I finally broke down and got a SmugMug account so I can post pix.  I bumped up against my limit for attachments and photos on Stromtrooper.com, so it was time to do something.  Just hate to part with a nickel.  I've seen so many missing Photobucket pix on numerous sites that I figure it's probably worth a few bucks.  Anyway, I was holding on the the Weestrom so tightly that I forgot to get the camera out during the riding.  All I got was some campground shots.

Here's Jerry, the KLR pilot from Bismarck, trying on Jason's DR-Z:

I went to Terry Peak Summit while you braver guys bashed about in the rocks:

I've ordered brake light switches and DOT tires for my WR426.  Woo hoo.
