This year a few of us here bought season passes to Terry Peak. Lately every year we get a group together for a day or two of skiing fun. This year for the first time, I got a season pass also and now have all my gear again. So today I went Skiing! I didn't get there until after 1 pm or so, but hey I didn't care, I have a pass! On the way home I got to thinking about the last few years and people meeting to go skiing. Basically, the east river guys coming out. So I decided we should have a "Skiing Thread" to plan day trips and to report on conditions for anyone that might be going or coming out to the hills. Oh yeah, and for Danny Boy and I to talk trash about racing each other.
So here it is. Weather was great, bright and sunny. Only skied a couple of hours, but managed to make about 10 runs. Snow conditions were at best, okay. Only about 4 runs were open and two chair lifts. Kussy was my first run. About 1/2 way, I got a phone call. That at least let me rest. Kussy was kind of icy. Not bad, but just to the point you couldn't trust the snow as you turned. Left side of Kussy was showing signs of weeds poking up. The Steward side of the mountain was much better. I stayed there most of the time. Only running Kussy on the first and last run.
So there you have it, my first ski report. So any of you skier types out there looking for company to ski with, post it here.
Thanks Dave.
Actually I have been thinking about taking a trip out soon. I thought about it this weekend but I knew the terrain was limited so I decided to wait a bit. I may however decide to come out this coming weekend but will know till probably Thursday.
We shall see.
Oh, by the way, another 20 visits to the hill you may begin trusting the snow are you turn. That an East cost skill you may know nothing about. :evil
I was up there yesterday, only did a few runs and as you said it was OK at best. hopefully we will get some snow before too long.
Breakfast tomorrow morning, but I was thinking about going skiing afterwards.
Any takers.....................Gerry? It will be an old man day, ski a couple of hours and be tired!
wish i could join you :(
Okay
Tentatively I am planning to come out this friday evening and ski on Saturday morning. I am hoping Paul and Nathaniel will join me, but we shall see.
I will probably be good for only 4 hours or so, so I am thinking about 10 am to start.
Anyone else interested? May even be able to be talked into a few hours on Sunday.
I'm in!! I was up on Sunday morning and it was better than expected. by the looks of the forecast we will have your east coast conditions ;)
I am alright with that. Make me feel at home.
For those interested this: https://youtu.be/t5J1cJwXlO0 is playing at Santana's bar and grill in the deadwood mt. Grand at 8:00 tonight, no cover.
Wish I was out there before then :(
Will try to make it. Thanks
So its a go
we are leaving when Paul gets out of work
On the hill sometime a bit before 10 am

I've been busy waxing my skis!
Waxing on or waxing off? :evil
Actually a great skiing day. Pretty windy (and cold) on the Stewart side, but the rest wasn't bad. Long as you didn't hang out at the top. Snow was not bad at all, but there still thin spots peaking out. Not all the chairs are running yet, but more of the mountain is open.
Dan, Pauly, Joel, Mike and I were all there. Skied a lot today, but by 2 or so I told Dan & Mike my legs were burning. That was all they needed to hear......Mike said, "me too, I'm thirsty!" Dan said, "I'm tired too, lets do one last burner!" We pointed our skis down hill and off we went. Dan made about four turns down the whole mountain and Mike did about six. They were doing the Giant Slalom or Downhill race thing. I would have stayed with them, but I had to stop and apologize to several different groups that they smoked through the middle of. I explained that Dan was new to skiing and completely out of control and Mike was just trying to help him. They were all still mad. So then I just told the truth, "they're tired and very thirsty." "No Problem, we understand!" One guy even volunteered to give Dan a few pointers. I finally got to the bar after I "burned the hill." I still don't know what the means. :-\ They already had beer and were flirting with a couple of snow bunnies! And was the end of skiing for the day!
One more thing, stay tuned on a different thread. We hatched a new plan for the upcoming summer Rally. It sounds like a lot of fun, confusing, a lot of work, and need more riding volunteers...... We're thinking about having a Black Hills Dakar kinda of race! You know, road books, speed limits, maybe GPS, photos of certain sites to keep it real and around a 150 miles.........stay tuned. LD
Oh yea.... kinda like the race idea!
Watched an enduro "running/hiking" race once where the participants had to rip a spacific page out of a book placed at a remote check in station to verify that they were there - thought that was cheap and ingenious!
Dave, glad you made amends with the other skiers for Mike and Dan!
Yup, That about sums up the day.
the funny thing was when I mentioned doing a last burner, we got down to the bottom and Dave says, "I didn't know what you meant by a burner." Mike wondered if he was disappointed that we didn't stop half way down and spark up some weed.
It was a great day and the snow was better than expected. Thanks to all for the good times and Thanks for the Pizza Dan. hope to do it a gain before spring, hopefully we will get some snow in February.
Yup Snow would be nice.
Planning on being in Lead next weekend Feb 16, 17, 18 to do a bit of skiing.
Thinking of spending some time with Paul and Joel and work on some technique in the morning and then do some ripping late morning and into the afternoon.
Pizza and Beer at Shivers to follow.
Who's in?
I'm in. I assume you mean February?
Yes, Sorry, I have two things on my mind. I will edit
Hopefully they will open the red chair.
went up yesterday and it was really good. looks like a chance of snow today and Thursday and then 40 for Saturday so should be perfect!!
Cool. Looking forward to it
was up yesterday and the conditions are good, there is snow in the forecast today so they should get even better. best news is the red chair is now open!! see ya Saturday!
Cool. Sounds like a great day
I'll probably be there Saturday sometime. Noonish I would imagine. Mike, text me when you get there.
Count me in, see you up there in the morning.
I will spend a bit of time with Paul in the morning. So you guys can do your thing till 1030 or 11.

Had a great day at Terry Peak yesterday, best snow I've found this season. Grooming was fantastic, I caught the 3rd chair up in the morning and the last chair of the day. 55 runs total (see attached Ski Track pic.) Damn Mike got me started on that phone app. Still trying to beat Lonesome's 50 mph and know I'll never again get to 60 mph like Mike does. All I know is that I skied 3 years of Dan's runs in one day and didn't drink beer until after the lift closed.
One inch of new snow last night made for another good day of skiing today.
Only 4 days left at Terry Peak in this ski season and I'll post a $50 challenge to anybody who can beat 55 runs in one day (as recorded by Ski Tracks phone app). Must be on Kussy, Goldcorp or/and Surprise lifts.
Trust me those speeds on that app are often a pipe dream.
I wish I could take you up on your challenge bit Nathaniel and I are headed for Moab on Saturday. There will be next year.

OMG! Gerry, I thought the 44 runs a week or two ago was awesome. Neither Mike or I will ever break that record, we can't go that long without beer!
Forty six miles of skiing. That's almost as far as the drive from Custer to Terry Peak. Great job.
Holy smokes Gerry! I doubt I would be able to walk for the rest of the week after that day of skying.
wow, That is impressive!! I don't it can be matched on a weekend, maybe next year I will make an attempt. but, like Dave said I may need beer long before 55 runs....
I might have 55 runs in my whole life...Once a year is tough to build up runs...Once I live out there it will be challenge accepted!
WELL DONE GERRY! :)
You know Gerry is serious about skiing, because he shelled out 99 cents for the app. For a KLR rider that's a big purchase. ;D
^ Nailed it!
That's an achievement. I would suspect he found the app on sale somewhere..... ;D
