Title: Did the Dew Today
Post by: Dratharr on January 04, 2009, 07:52:34 PM
Well I did the Dew today and yesterday. The bike has 15K on it, the original Dew Hickey was still intact as well as the spring, but it was still good to Dew for peace of mind..Went together fairly well, I reused the gaskets, yes I know I am a cheap bastard. Decided to go ahead and check the valves while I was at it. The intakes were at the bottom end of the spec; and the exhausts where at the low end on the right side and .001 out of spec on the left. I didnt have the shims to loosen the intakes all the way too the loose end of the spectrum so they ended up at .006, I think the range was .004 to .008, and the exhaust I ended up at .010 on both ends, and the spec was .006 to .010 if I remember correctly. It fired right up so I hope everything will sort itself out fine. Now an oil/filter/air filter change and she should be ready to rock again! My wife and I spent a couple of days in Estes last week for R&R, on the way back I stopped at the KTM dealership in Loveland, those 990's are the deal some day I am going to have one of those! I will probably have to win the loto first!

So far out of the 5 or 6 I've either done or personally know about, I've only seen one broken spring (Ryan!), but its cheap insurance.   Broken doohickeys can do very bad things.

I took it out on a spin and everything seems to be well and good. I hate this time of year I keep running over to the Honda shop looking at the 08' XR650L they have on the floor, I know it wouldnt be near as good as the KLR on the road, but it would sure be fun on the dirt!

My spring wasn't broken, but it was bound up on the case and had worn a jagged groove in it ... clearly there was no travel in the spring because of how it was wedged in the case.  So yea, good thing I changed it ---- thanks Jeff!

I think every KLR should have this done! I just recently saw another horror story on ADV and just feel lucky it didn't happen to me. There are knockoffs of Eagle Mike's design but I've heard none of them fit or are built as we'll as his.

Becareful where you say that, the boys over in KLR50.net  freak out. I for one don't see the issue since eagle mike did copy kawis design and make better so when when another company copies his and makes it cheaper every one freaks. Ever notice if you write klr650.com on that site it is omitted? frickin hilarious ;D They used to pimp arrowhead who has a top notch shop in moab untill he started carrying the knock off of Eagle Mikes stuff.

Mike makes good solid stuff so when it comes to critical parts you should buy what is proven to work. Not sure it matters but I find how worked up they get rather humerous. I have bought stuff from Fred at arrowhead and I have bought stuff from KLR650.net so who ever can get it to me the cheapest and fastest is okay in my book.

Chad - I agree cheap and fast is great!! Sometimes those guys over on KLR650.net can get crazy.

had it for a year, and still loving it. Shame the weather has been so crud lately, but from the looks of today spring is finally arriving.

His host is xxx.LV, so he's posting from Latvia.   I've deleted a TON of .LV and .RU accounts, but let this one go because made actual posts (rather than porn and viagra scams)... even though they don't make a lot of sense :)

I ate a potpie today then looked at my bike. Spring will be here soon just after it snows and then it melts. I love summer its warmer than now. I like riding my motorcycles and my mountain bike and my girlfriend.
U like to fix motorcycle?
Do the Dew and feel safe.
good day
