Had a fantastic time with some great riding. Never seen anyone start a fire with a matress pump nor have I ever seen 4 DS cruising back to camp loaded with firewood. That sure did beat dragging it from across the highway.

Glad everyone made it home in one piece. Had my first actual DS crash and I did not want anyone to see it but regardless how fast I picked the bike up,  Ryan managed to see the cloud of dust, tote lid knocked off, and my rack all jacked up. Now that the bike is home I get to go through and fix the stuff I broke like a few other people.

Rear Rack
Spedo Cable I think
Rear wheel adjuster
Throttle got a litttle jacked up but now it works like a throttle lock ;)
Subframe bolt kit.

Title: carnage roll call
Post by: loingrader on September 22, 2008, 01:17:08 PM
yea, i caused a bit of damage to my beautiful 16 yr old barbie klr too.

bent shifter lever
broken left hand mirror mount
gouged/scraped left side panel plastics

and then there's the ttr225

lost 2 footpeg bolts
hairline fracture on engine case complete with leaking engine oil

considering the stuff we rode out there, i think we all came out amazingly well.  except maybe ryan  ;D

Considering that my bike was on the ground more than any others, I sustained suprisingly little damage. Just cracked my skidplate when I came down hard on a very big rock (pic above).

You guys are all great riders and my hats off to ya! Especially the first timers, Paul and Dustin, did a great job! Very impressive riding from a couple guys with virtually no experience off-road at all...I was, and still am, amazed!

Dustin really surprised me when, after going through the rocky creek bed loop, and looking like he had just had enough of the whole thing, turned around and did it all again!!! Props to you, bud! I didn't have enough balls to try it again that day, but would like to some day.

I'd also like to try the "Hill from Hell" again, just want to say I did it, I guess. I think if I'd had my tires aired down, I might have made it a little farther than I did...won't know until I try it again. I really need to be fresh to try it, though, not something I feel good about attempting when tired. I felt really bad that I made Brian ride my giant pig of a bike for the first time down that shit, which he did without flinching, OR crashing. Brian is one of the best riders I've ever known, period.

Since I'm the oldest in our little group (this time around, at least), AND have the biggest bike, I felt really bad about paddling my way through everything and holding you guys up. I'll get better, I'm sure, but 'til then, please bear with me!  ;D

BTW, that nastly little hill climb on Sunday morning that I refused to do...the 950 (and me) just isn't made for that kind of stuff. If you could warn me in advance about that kinda thing, I'd really appreciate it!  :o  I'm more than happy to go around and meet you guys on the other side of stuff like that...just not worth it to me to get hurt riding that far over my head.

Oh, and what is it with you guys and rocks??  Is it a masochistic/fetish thing or what?  ???  :-* Seriously, I can have just as much fun exploring fire roads, with much less of a chance for injury and/or death.  ;)  Next time I'd like to stay away from the rocky/technical bits, and explore some stuff that maybe we all haven't seen before....just IMHO, YMMV, and all that.

Ok, I'll stop whining now.  8)
Title: Re: fall ralley pics

it all depends on what you're used to riding.  i'm used to big drops, steep hill climbs and technical riding in our pastures and wooded creeks down in north central kansas.  so i'm a bit ahead of the game when it comes to the stuff we ride out in the hills because i've been riding bikes off road for 18+ years.  plus, i like the challenge.

if someone goes up something, then i'm going to try it too, especially if they are riding the same bike i am.  i like the challenge and am willing to risk damaging bike and body to meet that challenge.  stupid, yes.  fun, absolutely!

i've done crazier, dumber, and more dangerous things in my life, so i'm less worried about getting hurt when we're riding on the trails.  plus, with a group, there is someone to call in the helicopter if you get hurt.  as far as the bike goes, i didn't pay much for my bike so i'm less worried about damaging it than i would be if i were riding something more expensive.

Post by: Dustin on September 22, 2008, 04:07:46 PM
I had a ton of fun! There was a lot of stuff that I thought was way over my head.  ;D But with a little help from the group I was able to get through. I gained more experience riding with you guys in that two day period than I could have in a year by myself.  Watching what Flexlarson and Loingrader could do on a bike was absolutly impressive!!  ;D And how Yeti could handle that huge bike through all those massive rocks and come out unscathed is pretty awesome too!! I am looking forward to coming out with a little more armor on the bike and do some more crazy $hit!!!!  :)
Title: Re: fall ralley pics
Post by: loingrader on September 22, 2008, 04:20:25 PM
yea, watching how others handle their bikes and pick lines, etc really aids in the learning experience.  that's only the second time i've had my klr out to the hills, but by sunday i felt like i had gained some extra ability that i didn't have at the end of the june trip.

every time you ride, you gain something.  the harder the trail, the more experience you gain (to a point of course).

Hey now, I think my bike is bigger!  Well at least a little taller :)    And I'm a very close second in the age category.    What is it with old guys and bikes that are too big.

Paul Chris and I had a blast.  Chris was the other "virgin" and hats off to him as well. At least anything anywhere near that level of difficulty was new to him.   All the noobs handled it great. We were bummed to leave early, but at the same time its good we left early as the DRZ had tire trouble on they way home.  We didn't get home until Sunday morning around 10 as the last 1/2 of the trip we were airing the tire up every 20 miles.  And I had to leave the house by 4:30 today, so I needed some rest.

I was definitely more comfortable this time out compared to June.    Too bad I missed the rock gardens on Saturday.

Hey Alan where is that pic of me sliding down the hill!?

Here is a picture when I ran out of gas coming into Pierre. :o  I actually ran out of gas about 500 yards up the hill but was able to coast almost the whole way!!!  8)

I think it must have been the terrible winds that caused the low MPG.

I have to say that I was pretty impressed with the ability of some of the newer riders. Some of the stuff was more intimidating than it was hard but this group seemed way more confident that the first ralley group. I think part of that had to do with the first group having several guys with more experience and this time we had guys that where very new so they just did it.

Looking forward to next June. Of all the guys that have ridden out here I have not heard one complaint yet so even though June is a ways a way this little ralley could get even bigger next year ;D

Thanks for letting me join the group even if I was lacking in a few areas:

1) No head-lamp, even if the fire did illuminate most of western SD, that's still no excuse
2) My bike was not nearly heavy enough, expensive enough, or as pretty as all of yours (especially Bret's pink accented KLR)
3) And I didn't bring a single Backwoods honey berry cigar, which is a crime in itself (although I did smoke my fair share)

Either way, I had a great time and met some great people.  Thanks for the good time and I love the pictures.

Hey guys thanks for the great time! You're all a good bunch of guys and it was some of the coolest riding/terrain I've ever seen. It's been a while since the adrenaline has pumped like that! Sorry about having to cut the trip short. I still cant compress a tennis ball without my elbow hurting like hell. Not sure what's going on there.

Can't wait to do it again!

I hope you guys were sober enough to separate your sleeping bags.

Chris

QuoteI hope you guys were sober enough to separate your sleeping bags.

"Hey guys, my sleeping bag's missing!"
"Yeah, me too!"
"WTF??!!"
"I think someone's f*ckin with us..."
"Yeah, check Ryan's tent!!"
"That guy was cold last night...I'm sure he stole 'em!"
"Sure enough...and Brian's in on it!"

Looks like you guys all had a blast and the Photo's/scenery is beautiful.  Sorry I didn't make it but had a busy 48 hrs and pussed out to go home and relax for a day before my normal 24 shift on Monday.  Looking forward to June though.  Just wondering is the time frame still the same?  Second or third weekend in June?  Let me know so I can ask for it off.

That is the plan which is to keep the wekends the same. I think is the 3rd weekend in June. Look forward to you and even willy's if he can make it. It was a great time and the riding was just as fun as hanging around the camp fire.

So Chad, what happened with your chain?  From Alan's comentary on the videos it sounds like you broke it.  How did that get resolved?  BTW...nice pipe  ;D performance increase according to the butt dyno?

i don't know about performance enhancing on that pipe, but it sounds like the meanest john deere tractor you've ever heard.  especially when it's barrelling down on you cause you're going too slow.  look out!

Just knocked it off thanks to a rock and a little throttle ;D Poped it back on and gave it some lube.

As far as the pipe it sounds better or a little louder than stock and it is way lighter but the carb need some adjusting to richen it up. Should get it adjusted in the next few months but Brett is never had to worry about me passing him, he is a pretty good rider.

I had a great weekend!

Thanks Brett for picking the 3rd Weekend in September-We'll make it annual!

Everyone rode great-even better than it June.  Improvement all the way around.

The newbies-you all really impressed me as everyone else.  I hope you're hooked on Dual Sport Riding.

Sooo, in regards to rocks!  When Brian leads, expect rocks!  He'll tell you that it will be easy, but it won't be.  Brian is one to push you and make you a better rider.  He'll pat you on the back, make you feel good, and then get you up hills you never thought you could.  It must be the pshycologist in him.  Oh, those poor little native kids!  I know a little push has made me a better rider.  I just wish Brian could make me a better man  ;D

Also, we rode way harder terrain this ride than we did in June.  Nice work fellas!

Things I learned!

We ride way more challenging stuff than most DDS riders-when is the last time you saw any posts on KLR sites where every picture was filled with boulders.  That makes the DDSR the best group out there.

Don't forget your sleeping bag or camera.  When you do, just steal everyone elses bag and snuggle with Brian.

Don't try to jump a big rock at 290 lbs going 25mph just because you got lucky the first time and caught a little air!  It will ding your wheels up!

Wives really don't like us having fun without them, they say it's ok, but it's not.  This is something I'm forced to relearn everytime I leave, and choose to forget!

My regrets include not trying that super steep climb where both Brian and Brett dumped their bikes, and not making it up that big hill on Sunday where we all dumped the bikes-well, except Brian-But Brandon seemed to think he dumped it too and got it picked up before the rest of us were able to see it.  Plus, he rutted out the trail for everyone else you know ;)  Next time fellas.

3rd Weekend in June is our next scheduled event-Same time, same place.  My vote is to explore the Spearfish Canyon area.

If anyone wants to ride this Winter, look James up!  He rode 4k last winter!

that big hill off the camp 5 road is my nemesis.  it broke my mirror.  it bent my shifter.  it scratched my pink sticker.  i will conquer it on a klr someday.  mark my words.

doing some reminiscing.  this thread never get's old.  a lot of familiar faces but not many of these bikes are still part of the immediate DDSR family!  chad and I have stayed the course on our KLR's!
