Title: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: The Yeti on July 03, 2012, 05:33:26 PM
Soooo....where you all wanna stay this year? I kinda liked the accomodations at KOA last year (besides the torrential downpour), plus it's closer to the trails I'm familiar with.  8)

If you guys wanna try and stay in another area of the hills, I'm up for it. Just be aware that a lot of campgrounds are already closed that time of year or are unwilling to make deals with me.  :o

Is the KOA Palmer Gulch? Curious about the deals there (called up there to take the family and was floored by the rates). I am up for anywhere, but the campground at Deerfield treated us very well when I was there earlier this year with a group of (cough) ATV's. All kinds of trails in the area as well. My two cents.

Mystic Hills would probably be friendly to us as it looks like they cater to the ATV crowd, but that's not far from the FnF so its probably not the best choice.

I was eyeing the southern hills map and the area between Summit Ridge and Bear Mnt sure look to be loaded with some kind of trails, but I have no idea of the quality.  Custer would be the nearest camping I'd guess.   PS - Alan thanks for starting this.. I was just thinking that its needs to get done!

I always laugh when I ride past this Custer campground. With a name like that, they must cater to dirt bikes, right?  ;D

I don't know anything about the campground, just get a chuckle out of the name.

Yup, that's Palmer Gulch. Last year we had $5/night/person for tenters and $20/night for RV sites...I was shocked that they would go that low considering their regular rates.

Do any of you guys have an 'IN' at Deerfield? I could just give them a call, but I didn't know if anyone else is more familiar with the owners....this is the place you guys are talking about, right? http://mtmeadowsresort.com/

Yeti, the place sold last fall to the present owners.  I don't know them, but they will sure remember us.  We were there twice with about 20 riders coming in all at once.  I did mention we were talking about a rally there in Sept.  They were happy and excited to hear about a possible rally there.  I think I would just call them for rates and such.  LD

Title: Re: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: loingrader on July 24, 2012, 03:37:31 PM
i'm bringing the kdx so i'd like to be close to trails.

also bringing the fam so will not be tenting.  rentable rv's or something with water and electricity would be a nice option if it's available where we stay.

but don't change plans for me.  i can stay somewhere else if needed and get to where ever the DDSR group is at!

it is coming up fast.  whatever you decide yeti, works for me.

FWIW i liked staying at the koa but deerefield would be fun too!

Yeti, I talked with the folks at Mountain Meadow Resort a couple of weeks ago when I was up there wandering around.  They were happy to know we were considering them for a location and they remembered us.  At the time, the week of the 13th was wide open for reservations.  I asked about the possibility of group rates and they were open to the idea.  They asked about how many, I figured the fall rally would be smaller than the spring so I guessed at around 40 people.  I've always liked the Deerfield area and am kind of partial to it.  I do believe the nights could be slightly cooler than that of the lower elevations.

My 2-cents; there's lots of ATV trails that are similar to single track.  Plus the usual two-track roads, and the normal gravel roads. Also there should be a pretty good chance of seeing elk around there at that time of year.  The ATV trails did seem to be popular at the spring rally, or at least I heard lots of favorable comments.  I do think the area also benefits newer riders and love-boat riding.  Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of rocks!

Okay, there's some info and its obvious where my vote is at, but I'll go anywhere, as long as I don't break something before then.  LD

Where ever it is will need to have cabin or room or RV rental as I will be traveling with my wife, she doesn't do tents. I'm up for anything with those limits.

Mountain Meadow has furnished cabins.

And fuel, a cafe, small store and trails right off the property.  what else do we need?

I think we should plan on this location for the fall rally if they will give us a deal.

Hey guys,

Deerfield sounds good to me. I'll give 'em a call in the next couple days and set it up. Then I can get the sign-up thread going right after I have the reservations.

From left field, what if we moved the date to 9/29 weekend?   There are two other groups (MN and NE guys, both which will have folks from previous DDSR rallies) both planning for that weekend.   Clay/TannerC can't make the 9/15 date and I can't either.    Its just a thought and if the majority want to keep the current date, that's cool too.
Title: Re: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: greatbuffalo on July 29, 2012, 09:51:39 PM
I've already made plans for the 13th - 16th. Pushing it ahead 2 weeks would put me out. 2 weeks ahead could also make a big difference in camping weather. That's my 2 cents.
Title: Re: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: loingrader on July 29, 2012, 10:05:53 PM
on adv they said they hoped for better weather this year...     :-\       anything after sept 1 runs the risk of being cold.  course it could be 80 degrees too, one never knows for sure!

worst case scenario, we keep ours as scheduled, they keep theirs, and folks can pick or choose which one they can attend (or both) and maybe we can work on dates and coordinate a group rally for sept 2013.
Title: Re: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: Hank on July 30, 2012, 10:06:52 AM
That's probably the best bet for now, unless there are a LOT of people that would prefer the 29th.
We'll see what Yeti and others say.

Makes aboslutely no difference to me as far as those dates go. I do think it SHOULD be colder by then, but like Bret sez - you never know!

Shall we take a vote? (See poll at top of this page.)

I am one of the guys who is planning the trip on the 29th. Last year we went the second week of Oct and had a good first day and back second and third day.  Weather was raining and snowing on us.  As far as getting the the three groups together, that is up to you guys. We aren't going to change the date because of cabins have been rented already.
We will be riding out of Nemo. If it don't work out this year getting together, maybe next fall. We try to go out and ride on the last weekend of Sept.

I voted doesn't matter.  I have a better chance of making 9/29 but that's not guaranteed either.

Hank, you and anyone else are more then welcomed to join our little group of guys. Like I said before, we are going to stay in Nemo and will take off from there usally around 9 in the morning, we try to ride gravel and single track all day, or till we get tired.

There is a group from Minnesota and a group from Nebraska going out on the 29th.    There are planning threads over on advrider for those groups.

The 13-16th dates are the DDSR rally (planned here).

OK Rates are as follows:

Cabin $75 per night
Full hook up $29 per night
Electric only $23 per night
Tent $14 per night, $5 for an additional tent on the site

Deduct 10% for our group rate.   Sounds like rates are going up next year.

They currently have 1 cabin rented for those dates, 3 remain.
One full hook up site is rented, 4 remain.

I'll start a sign up thread in a day or two once people have digested this (and commented as needed).

Thanks again for taking care of this Hank!

I assume the RV 'electric only' sites include water...? Do you know how many of those sites are left?

Also, do they allow dogs?
Title: Re: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: Hank on August 16, 2012, 06:34:18 PM
There is "water around" the electric sites.   That isn't very helpful.

I assume camper people will make their own reservations?   I'm new to this :)

Dogs are allowed - if leashed.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but figured this might be the place.  LD

Well, once again, Bogus Jim and I have been out riding/scouting for the fall rally.  Or maybe I should say we just like to ride, but we eventually made it to the Deerfield area!  This past Saturday, Jim took the lead and I ate dust all day, but what a day.  We were at a rock cliff on the far (south) side of Dark Canyon, a Pactola Dam overlook on the downstream side (very cool).  Also made it to the bottom of the dam and observed a pair of Osprey parents and their chicks in the nest.  Found a couple of new FUN trails and a familar old one just ridden in reverse.

Another overlook we shall call the "End of 129."  You ride forever on trails I will probably never find again without Jim and eventually you make it to a cliff with a 270 degree view.

Last, but not least, the grand daddy of them all, a scenic view overlooking the Castle Creek valley.  What makes this special, it's one of the most famous photographs taken on Custer's historic 1874 Black Hills Expedition.  It's a photo of the expedition's wagons (coming towards the camera) in a long line up the Castle Creek Valley.  The wagons had stopped and were waiting for a temporary bridge to be built in the creek so they could pass.  The expeditions photographer, W.H. Illingworth, took the opportunity of the delay to climb up and take the photo July 26, 1874.  We of course didn't hike, just rode there, but I got a pretty good photograph!  LD

I love the two Paul Horstead books with the steroscope photos. That is a really great concept. I always find it interesting how few treees there were when Custer came in. I assume they had less fire issues with natural forests. It would be fun to follow GB's map of these.
Title: Re: Planning for Fall 2012 Rally
Post by: greatbuffalo on September 05, 2012, 05:14:51 PM
I found quite a rare book that was actually the ground work done for the Horsted book in the 70's. Surprisingly there is no mention of this book in there citations. It was done by USD I think or SDSU. I'll have to hunt it down and bring it with me to the rally. I think you guys would find it interesting. The whole route is both USGS maps, as Horsted's is as well as aerial photographs. Being nearly 40 years earlier the trail was more prominent as well.  This book even contains "now and then" photos.  Coincidence? I think not.

Paul is an SDSU alumni, so i wonder if he came across that in his time there, and then did his books later? Maybe you can black-mail him, retire and take us all on a round the world bike adventure!!

Oh yes, this is a conspiracy theorists dream. ;D I'm all about a round the world bike trip though.
I do have to admit that was annoyed though, at the blatant similarities of the books and no citations. Granted the Horsted books are much more polished and have a wealth of info and very well organized but not even a side note. Like I said, I'll bring and you can be the judge.

Hmmmm........what bike do I take around the world????????????   I'm thinkin' the Triumph Tiger Explorer XC, now that they finally listened to me and put spoked rims on it.  8)
