Title: Follow up
Post by: Hank on June 24, 2013, 07:27:09 AM
Well, as always it was a blast.   It was nice to see everyone again.    Didn't see much of some of you, but the rain played a role in that!  Seems like Great Buffalo (and crew) and Cara and I barely crossed paths.

The Sunday morning ride was perfect.. too bad we didn't see more weather like that, although the riding was fun while it lasted the other days too.

I was grateful we had a dry place to sleep.  Hope all you tenters have got your stuff dried out  >:(

Post up your good videos and pictures!

Osnabrock and I did the power line hill above Whistler's Gulch as our last ride.    I have a clip of it here.    I called it "the killer hill" tongue in cheek, as it used to strike fear into the hearts of Yeti and I when we were riding our 950s on the stock Scorpion tires.    It's just plain fun and easy on a more appropriate bike.   Likewise with Camp 5.  That was a lot of fun.

Nice meeting you Hank! I wish we could have gotten a chance to ride more in the hills on this trip but it just wasn't in the cards!

I think the fish eye effect of the cameras always make it look faster.   I crept down it at idle in 1st and came back up at a good clip in 2nd....   I wouldn't want to go down it any faster!

It was a good time hanging out with, and riding with my family and some new folks from Minnesota. Was very impressed with the KLR hack and the places he put it. Unfortunately he bent the frame a bit.

Would have been nice to ride some more technical stuff with all my old friends but introducing family and new friends to offroading can be a delicate task. Don't want to overwhelm them their first time out. We stayed close to camp and that was a wise decision with the weather the way it was.

As I type, I am stuck here in the hills with a broken Xterra. Hoping to get it fixed before the weekend but who knows.

You made that look too easy, Hank. I was seriously terrified the first time I attempted to go down that hill on the 950 - thank god Brian could ride her down, cause I was just gonna leave her there and walk home.  8)

I do think that I would be a little better now-a-days though, that was my first year of dual-sporting after all. Would definitely be a piece-o-cake on the WRR.

LOL I know the feeling.  I don't know what was worse, Camp 5 or that hill on the 950.  Both were a thrill but the best part was seeing the end.   We were both rookies that year, and I don't think the 950 or the Scorpions were the best choice for our experience levels or the places we chose to ride them.    We made it though!

I figured ah, I've been riding street bikes for 25 years and have all this dirt bike experience, I can handle this!   I learned that riding around on the farm (15 or 20 years prior) on a clapped out 70's KE175 doesn't count :)  Oh wait I had a KDX200 on the farm too  :o

Here's a few photos.  Apparently I wasn't in the picture taking mood this weekend.  I didn't take very many.  But then I was leading and getting lost at the same time!  Both Friday and Saturday we managed to avoid the hail and still ride.  Although Saturday afternoon, the rain did catch up with us.  Once again I had a great time, seeing old friends and always meeting new ones.  LD

Friday morning.

Oh yes the flat tire!   I had a great time riding with you guys for the first time!  I do have give it up to the pit crew. Many tools at the ready and some comments too.  HAHA!  Thanks to all that helped me get the old KLX on the trail again.  Fun times for sure.  Can't wait to go again.

What a great time.  Thanks everybody.  It sure was nice to have a few nights where the food was taken care of.  Hopefully I can reciprocate some time.
The guy on the 650 trials bike was Kyle.  Well done.
The trip through camp 5 was a good one with some old faces, Austin (Excess) and some relatively new faces to riding at the rally......Cara. Great job.
While no evidence exists of it, I accomplished a few goals while I was out.  One was to properly "dual sport" the GAS GAS and the other goal was to climb one of the hills that I wasn't able to make it up in the past.
Thanks all.

Aww shucks, thanks Jim!

If we do have a cook-off, at least we would be certain to have enough chili for more folks! The last time I brought mine (June 2012) I ran out rather quickly. With these rallies growing in attendance, it's hard to keep up any more.

I know who's got the best attitude and heart.  Cara, oh sorry, Oredenbacher.  I know she had an intercom going with Hank, and she might have been cussing him a bunch on that, but all I ever saw was a smile.  I'm talking about the Sunday morning Camp 5 ride.  Shortly after getting started, and into the dense trees, the trail dropped down a steep hillside.  It was muddy and slippery on one side and rocky on the other side.  As far as I know, everyone left us to get down the hill by ourselves.  It was steep, slippery, and off chamber.  Every time she touched the rear brake, it would start to slide sideways.  I watch and wanted to help, but wasn't sure how I would even get off my bike unless I just fell off.   She made it down slowly and continued on.  We decided we would let the "yahoos" go on by themselves and eventually we would leave another way.  By the time we got to the spot where we could turn and get out of there, she was ready to continue, but "no more steep hills."  We made it out safely and actually had a good time.  I'm sure both our confidence levels are the better for it.  But, I still don't know what was said on the intercom!  LD

I'm always quite thankful for folks putting up with learner me along on the ride.  Just happy to get to come along.  A belated thank you to those who got all the gates - ie osnabrock.  I'll probably only freak on the intercoms if Hank takes me & my "new to me" Tiger - "big beast to me" -down min maint roads again.  Took me a week to end those flashbacks.  :'(  Only focused on wrestling the WR upright down the greasy slope - and blocking out visions of how meeting the dirt would go.  Pretty sure my right foot wasn't cooperating about letting up more on the brake like the gray matter was wanting.  Next time, I'll take the rock instead like we chatted about.  Won't forget the sweet old lady at the campground while we were gearing up to leave on Sunday- only six words for Hank & I.  Be careful.  Be careful.  Be careful.  She said it kind of like a threat! ::)  A very fun get together despite the less than perfect wx.  Happy to see Akfalla again.  Hope more spouses/gf's can join in in the rallies ahead.

I really didn't catch much flak through the intercomm at all!   Just the occasional "I can't believe you thought I'd like this" to which I'd reply "I didn't say you'd like it I just thought you could handle it.". :)

I'm quite proud she got through it!

Now the minimum maint road with rocks, water, and slimy hills with her on her Tiger might be a different story >:D   But we survived that too and it was fun!!

I have some photos to post, but tried and was not successful.  I looked for photo posting instructions on the forum but could not find any.  So any help would be appreciated.

I was also wondering if the preview mode showed the actual photos or just a photo icon.  Maybe I did it correctly, but just don't know it. I would rather use my Dropbox photos, but could copy them to Photobucket if that would make it easier.

Thanks...........Jakhack

Hi.   Photobucket is your best bet:

http://dev.dakotadualsportriders.com/smf/index.php?topic=7.0

Photobucket has changed their interface quite a bit since I made those instructions, but the idea is still the same.   There is a "get links" (I think) button and you copy / paste the IMG code.

I agree ORedenbacher... it'd be nice to see more ladies out there. I just have to be thankful to ride with gentleman... they've saved me quite a few times. Had a blast again this year, even with the weather. I can now check "riding in hail" off my bucket list.

As always, it was nice meeting/chatting with everyone. Hope to see you all in September! Ride safe!

Riding in the cold/rain really wipes a person out... thank goodness for the warm fire. Thanks for whoever supplied the wood!  :evil

Thank you all that joined me and my "posse" this spring. I had a great time and my daughter in law had a very positive offroad riding experience for her first time out. We didn't scare her off and I was very pleasantly surprised at her offroad skills that come naturally. The guys from MN we rode with were great to hang with and had the same laidback attitude that weekend that I did. We had fun and  was surprised at the places the KLR hack was able to go. A little bit worse for wear in the end but a great machine that has me thinking...... :evil :evil :evil

Anyway, Fall Rally will be different. Leaving a large part of the family behind to focus on MY riding. Looking forward to it.

Such a great time! Thanks LD for leading us around and getting us lost. That is what we are out there to do after all?? Lisa's chili was delicious, and the hamburger feed really hit the spot after riding back to camp in a monsoon...
