Title: Fall Rally Planning
Post by: The Yeti on June 28, 2013, 01:27:04 PM
Figured we better get planning for the Fall rally!

First things first:

LOCATION??

I wasn't in on last years fall rally, so I don't know if you guys want to go back to Deerfield.

I like the KOA the year before last.

Any other options we want to consider?

I'm fairly certain I'm gonna make this one - keeping fingers crossed!  :)

Yippy!   I'm already excited.

We should wait a second on the date also.   At the FnF we discussed possibly trying to hit the same date as Clay (tannerc) and the MN guys' date, which might be one week later?   Clay - please chime in.

That's not a make or break consideration either, as they already have their own thing going, but since the fall rally is generally pretty small it might be fun.

Perhaps a date poll is in order, or maybe we should first find out if there are dates that just WON'T work for people?  I think I'm flexible.

If the "joint rally" does work out that may affect where we stay.

I like Deerfield and the riding around there pretty well last year.   But I really don't care to be honest.

Hmmmm....a week later means a week colder, too.

How many are in the MN group? Are those the guys that usually stay at Nemo Guest Ranch?

Ya cold might be a consideration.   Day length is changing quickly around that time too.

They stay at Clay's dad's place.  We wouldn't do that of course, but maybe nearer there.   Hopefully Clay will chime in with the date and actual location.   He told me but there was a lot of beer involved.      We'll do what's best for the group, but I'd to look at the options before we nail it down.

You nailed the the date, weekend of Sept 20th! We stayed at my dads place last year which is right by the Piedmont trail head. We could meet up with the group or if the guys that are coming are up for camping just merge and head to which ever campground DDSR chooses!  :)

EDIT: The date that is, now on to location....

Any hesitations about camping in the Nemo area? If we decide to stay at the old mans place (he is really looking forward to the dirt bike crowd showing back up) We are just over the hill ten miles from Nemo. But where ever the group decides shouldnt be a problem. We will just see how things unfold and work with it that way. Also.. The Nebraska boys were up there camped at Nemo the same time I put on that BHNF ride last year, I posted over on ADV to see if they were planning on coming up again.

We were based at Nemo Guest Ranch for the fall rally a few years ago. Nice place. I'd camp there again for sure. Great access to trails (Pilot Knob anyone?). Shall we consider it "Nominee #1"??

I second it Yeti.  Maybe we will rub shoulders with another motorcycling icon.

Yeah, Nemo Guest Ranch has a store, bar and restaurant. Pretty nice (free) showers. Not bad at all.

I think we got a pretty good deal last time too....not as good as FnF, but I'll see what I can do.

Are we on for Nemo?    Can we ride Custer loop from there?     I could bring some food     Dave you camping or sleeping at home?
Title: Re: Fall Rally Planning
Post by: Lonesome Dave on September 04, 2013, 10:26:43 PM
NDave, I think I going to sleep at home, its only 15 min. away.  As far as I'm concerned, I think we should stay with plan A and go to Nemo.

As far as food goes, Elisa was also asking me about making chili this time around.  I believe Yeti was planning on chili also.  I need to talk to him.

As far a Custer loop goes, I'm in.  We have to talk to Bogus Jim, but I think we should set a time to leave Custer.  Any breakfast would have to before that.  Maybe, cut a section or two out and get the miles down around 100 to 120.  There's a 10 mile detour each way in the middle of the loop to get gas in Newcastle, WY (and food).  I really think everyone will like it and it's mostly big bike friendly.

You don't need to talk to me...  ???  you guys can leave anytime you want.  ;)

If I can figure out the bike stalling issue, I'd like to squeeze in one more Wy trip in September. I'll try to make it back in time for the rally though.

So, do we have a place in mind where we will all convene in about a week?

I haven't got a clue as to where to stay. If we want to get further south, The KOA at Palmer Gulch treated us pretty well.

We need to make a decision pretty quick. I don't many people really care where we stay, we just need to get it set. It seems kinda weird that I haven't made any reservations and its less then 2 weeks away.

I would make some arraignments but I'm short on time as well. I am parked at work for 4 days, only 2 days off then back here at work for 4 more.

I'll do what I can but time and distance and limited local knowledge may hinder my efforts.

Post by: Lonesome Dave on September 06, 2013, 08:12:28 AM
In my opinion we should stick with plan "A" and stay at Nemo.  That's what was decided a few months back.  There's plenty of single track in the area to get hurt on and two track for the rest of us.  And don't forget Pilot Knob area, I was through there last week and it's full of jumps.  And, there're lots of interesting things around there too, including the Dalton Lake area, a couple of caves, and Iceman trail.  Also, Tannerac was staying in Piedmont with his father (I think) so it's only 20 or so minutes for him to Nemo.

Moving on, if we decide to do the full Custer Loop,  its 160 miles of trail.  Jim says he has done it in as little as seven hours by himself.  In other words, this is not easy, especially with a group of 5 to 10.  I'm willing to try again, or modify it shorter.  Our mistakes in the past attempts have been horsing around before we actually get there to start.  Its a great ride but you have to "commit to the line" (sorry, I really like that) and start early.  I've even thought about "trailering" with several bikes to Custer.

Elisa says she will do Chili again if others can bring the fixings (bowls, spoons, cheese, chips), however, she would prefer not to drag it all to Custer, she said Nemo sounds much better.

I guess I thought someone had already talked to Nemo Guest Ranch, if not, I will call or go up there and give them a list or post what people are suppose to do.

Food planning;   Elisa is willing to make her "Boiler Maker Tailgate Chili" again, however if there's no interest this time, she's fine with that also.  She can do it either Friday or Saturday night.  Depends on what we want or need.  One consideration would be the Custer loop ride, meaning Friday or Sat. and whether we want ready made food after getting back late.  Let me know what ya think, so I can pass it on.  She needs to know by Tuesday.

However, she needs others to bring the fixings.
We need paper bowls / plastic spoons, Cheese, Sour Cream, Fritos and/or Chips.

Add a post on what you want and can bring so we don't double up.

Thanks

If we can make it up on Friday I will see if the wife will make Jalapeño poppers or maybe some chocolate white moose cups.  How many should we plan for?    Just whatever?

Going to be a bit  awkward at first, I don't know a single one of ya. So when you see the cripple drive up in a Blue MG don't hesitate to introduce yourself.

Thanks to Fletch as well, although I wasn't able to keep up with that group, I had fun trying! Thanks for the great food again, the chili and pulled pork really hit the spot. I hope to see some of the new faces show up next spring. I am off to look for parts for my broken WR, I'd like to do one more weekend in the hills before the snow flies. Ride safe everyone!

Wonderful time was had by all. A few great new ones in the group from ND and a guy, Dave(?) from 400 and some miles away in NE that rolled in on the back of a DR650. Super nice folks. Srg, the guy with the busted leg even showed up with his lady in a very cool MG-B.

The rides were great, thanks to those that put in the effort to plan the rides and lead this loose bunch of idiots. You are appreciated.

Great food, thanks Gerry and Lisa.

No one got hurt  and only one broken bike. After a good nights sleep and a collective effort, it was found to just need a air filter cleaning. After that he back on the trail.

All in all and very good weekend.

I have a few pics I'll post in the next day or so.

I didn't take a lot of photos, but here's one of the group on the Custer loop on Saturday. As you can see by the sky, it was a perfect day.

(http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx177/photoquark/Miscellaneous/Miscellaneous%202/P1000240_zpsf2cc9b81.jpg) (http://s753.photobucket.com/user/photoquark/media/Miscellaneous/Miscellaneous%202/P1000240_zpsf2cc9b81.jpg.html)

I decided to skip riding Friday... Thursday evening I clipped a tree on the singletrack with the top of my helmet and wrenched my neck pretty badly. But Saturday I heard that GreatBuffalo was riding the Custer loop on his Tiger and I couldn't pass up a chance to ride with a living legend. I just took a few preemptive Advil.

As usual the camp food was awesome. Thanks to Lonesome Lisa for the chili Friday and and gerry1eye for pulled pork Saturday.

What a great weekend of riding! The weather couldn't have been nicer.

I wanna thank Fletch for taking our group on an awesome ride Friday. You're fun to ride with and very accommodating for everyone's riding level. I had a blast, and I am surprised that I  didn't cry about the Moon Rocks. I'm pretty stoked I have that on my list of places I've rode. I might have to give it another shot and see if i can do it without any help- I'd like to take more time and look around up there.

It was exciting to see more than just men this year too!  :)  Hope they enjoyed the ride on Saturday.

Ride safe everyone! Until next time....

Saturday was the best day for me. I had made the decision to ride the Tiger Friday night. All day Friday I rode the WR250F and had a ball. That bike is so much fun to through around and catch some air on the waterbars. the problem is the seat. With my recent health issues I find myself sitting more than I usually would. After the day was over, my sacroiliac joint was screaming. So the decision came down to; ride the WR and deal with it, trade bikes with Nathaniel, or take the bike orange beast out and prove to myself that even with the issue I have, I can still successfully negotiate the trail with the Tiger. the WR is also making a bit of piston noise and really didn't want to have it detonate 60 miles from camp.

There were some detractors of my decision around the camp fire but I think that solidified my resolve even more. My only concern was the risk of dropping the old feline and messing up he paint my kid poured his hard work into this spring. But he said "When I painted it, I knew what abuse this bike takes..... go for it."

We set out Saturday morning, and what a gorgeous morning it was. The sun was shining, only a few clouds in the sky, and the temps in the low 70s. We left camp and crossed over to 385 by gravel and started to long pavement beating to Custer. I was feeling pretty good about my decision to take the big bike. I was comfy. no single lung buzz to make my hands numb, and a wide seat to make my back side thank me. It was an uneventful transit to the trail.

We filled up with fuel in Custer. the thinking was that if we went where the plan was taking us, we may need the tankers in the group to refuel the bikes with smaller bellies. We then headed east almost to Custer State park and headed into the trees.

The trails were great. All different terrains to cross; rocky, grass, fields, sandy areas, some tight 2 track, and hard pack. It was nice that the trail kept changing so one didn't settle into a routine and make the mind wander. I had to be very conscious of the fact that I have no bash plate on the Tiger so good line choice was was important. I was glad to see that I was not the guy holding folks up. That's one of the things I like the most of this group is that no matter how slow you ride, folks will wait, and not encourage you to ride beyond your ability thus getting hurt. If you want to ride ahead, just know your going to have to wait a few till others catch up. There were a few that wanted a bit more spirited pace and split off to their own thing. Its great you have that option as well.

A couple of tricky spots kept me on my toes and the 955 was willing with gobs of torque to keep the rear wheel turning on the trail. The big bike is difficult at times to change direction but a bit of judicious throttling and decelerating keep the big bike going forward. I've said in the past that with a bike this big, one doesn't flick it, through it, or even turn it. One must will it into a turn and convince it that it really does want to go there. Lots and lots of body english and weight transfer keep it upright.

On we pushed, a couple of people, including my son has very miner offs but no one got hurt. We came to gate. Bogus Jim jumped from the WRR and released the gate. One of the young guys from North of the border, ND, dropped into a gully and started up the very rocky hill on the other side. I moved up to the edge, looked at Jim and asked, How bad is that hill?" he just looked at me and smiled. So after a short moment of hesitation, I thought, there's no time like the present. I dropped in and as I looked up the hill I could not see the top. So as to not worry about the top I looked 30 or so feet in front of me to chose my line. The blue KLR that had gone before me had stopped half way up along the side of the trail. More than likely to get a better view of me putting the orange pig on the ground. No way was gonna let that happen. I kept the Triumph in 2nd gear as to not produce too much torque to the rear wheel. About 2/3 of the way to the top my speed fell some so I had to jam the tranny into 1st. No time to clutch, just shove the shifter down and hope it it finds 1st and not neutral. The shift was perfect and up the hill I continued till I found an area good enough to stop without being in the way of others. I reached down and petted my big orange lump for being a good kitty.

We rode sometime further till we stopped in the the Jasper burn area in the vicinity of Jewel Cave. I had had it. I was done, tired in pain and worn out. So had Grubby. He had been fighting a shot rear shock all day and went back to to camp and spent the afternoon riding with his better half. I broke off shortly after and jumped on highway 16 and jammed back to Custer and north to camp. the ride back was a nice cruise. Passing campers and Harleys along the way.

I got back to camp, hung with the Grubbies for a bit and then showered. I had had a great day. What a great bunch of folks to ride with. Some great scenery, and awesome riding by all.

The big girl did go down once that day. At the intersection of a trail I pulled off to wait for the next rider. When I came to a stop Iput my right foot down to brace the weiI found there was nothing but hole under my foot and the bike started to tip to the right. I've learned a while ago that when this bike starts to go....... let it. So the bike dropped. No damage except to my ego. Cody from ND was the next rider along and assisted this old guy in lifting he back up. No harm, no foul.

Great day.

I missed out on some good riding in the spring with Tannerc and Akfalla, decided this fall I would make it a point to ride with them again. I love the challenge of trying to keep up and pushing my limits. Just a little way into the ride I knew I was in trouble. Fletch was leading and it was a pretty fast pace for me. I was having fun though, even though I wasn't riding very well. We came to a rocky climb and Fletch walked right up with no trouble. Next up was Chris King, he didnt quite make it. Fletch helped him get his machine the rest of the way up, while the rest of us watched from the bottom. Fletch came back down and blazed a trail around the hill climb, which most decided to use. I had climbed this hill  before, and it didn't look that bad. So up I went. I couldnt get any traction and was bouncing all over, ended up headed into a tree and had to stop. Chris and Fletch helped me get my bike up the hill, now I felt bad cause they were already worn out from rescuing Chris' bike. From then on, I couldn't do anything right. Psyched out? Maybe. Whatever it was, I dropped my bike again on another climb and decided to try and hook up with the easier group before I got hurt. Got back to camp about lunch time and no one was around, so I had a quick bite and went out on my own. Found some nice, challenging trails close to camp, turned out to be part of the centennial trail. I shut down late afternoon, the better half had shown up and I hadnt seen her in a couple weeks. Later, I was leaning on my bike while fueling it up, when I took my weight off of it, it bounced, and kept bouncing like a pogo stick. Uh-oh. Looking underneath there was oil under the rear shock. I figure it was a casualty of the Pilot Knob whoops. Decided to go ahead and ride it Saturday anyway, as the planned loop looked pretty tame. Man what great scenery. Wish I could have finished that loop. Hung with the group half the day Saturday, then split off to go take the wife for a ride. Couldn't tell you where we went, some easy trails, a water crossing, great scenery. She had a nice afternoon, she loves her little 230. On Sunday, Gerry1eye and David had a couple small loops and some single track in mind. Myself and Revmartin went along. I rode the wifes CRF230L due to my rear shock on the WR. I wasn't excited about it. Turns out, it was probably the funnest part of my weekend. I was worried, she doesn't do any rough stuff so it doesnt have a bash plate. Took a couple major rock hits underneath, but no damage. Finally bent the shifter 180 degrees backward (from my own stupidity) and figured I'd better not push it any farther. We were close to camp, so I bent it back the best I could and headed back. I had a blast on the 230, I have a bash plate on order, I may have to put some more trails under it! (Please don't tell Heidi I bent her bike!!)

I think we are doing a ride the weekend after this, I'd be glad to hook up with you and Fletch for 8257.  Might be the last ride of the season so it'd be good to end on a good note.

Man I wish I could have made it up for this one! You guys must have rode 8257 from East to West, I must ride it from the other direction because it looked really gnarly from that direction. That was the first single track trail I rode in SD when they came up with all the new trail markings. There is a weird looking shelter/lean-too right at the entrance, I took a picture of it last year and told my buddy it was a Sasquatch den! Great riding looks like Ziggy might have took some paint off of the foot-pegs on his KLX on that one! That Beta 2-stroke looks awesome, I really like the looks of that bike. Anyway thanks for the vids they have really made my week! It amazes me how that BRP just chugs up the hills, I know most of those climbs are WAY steeper than they look on the GO-PRO.
