The 2014 Dakota Dual Sport Riders summer rally will once again be held in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!

Location is Mountain Meadow campground at Deerfield Lake.

Amenities are a bit unknown, browse their website for more information.

Dates are September 11, 12, 13, and 14, 2014.  You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, September 11, departing on Sunday, September 14. Weather should be warm during the day and chilly at night (down into the 20s)  BUT, this is South Dakota...if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  ;-)

Entry Fee: FREE!

Standard Rates (we get 10% off this):
Cabins: $79
Full-Service RV: $32
Electric Only RV: $26
Tent Sites: $15

Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get 10% off this price!

The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it).  All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.

Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc.  There will be something for everybody!

Insert food details here...

DISCLAIMER:
Anyone attending this event, does so at their own risk. The Yeti, Hank, any other DDSR member, Mountain Meadow campground or ANYONE BESIDES YOU will not be held responsible for injury to yourself, your bike or gear! Now, let's get out and RIDE THE HILLS!!  P.S. No helicopters allowed!  :-)

I'm kinda on the fence here. The early date of this has set me back. I'm not complaining, just so happens with my schedule, I'll be a day short. So I think I'll come out on Friday instead of Thursday and stay for the weekend. I've always liked coming out on Thursday, this ones gonna be a bit different.

Gotta check with Mrs Buffalo to see if she wants to make this trip or not. I'll get things straight by the weekend.

Bad news gentlemen. Went to the doc this weekend got a MRI and found out I have a herniated disc in my lower back causing sciatica and much discomfort in all positions but laying down. Once again, I will probably miss the rally. I'm very upset about this, I know it's still 3 weeks out, but I'm not sure my wife would allow it even if I did feel better. Bike is parked for now. I see a  doc tomorrow that will hopefully give me good news.

Lonesome Dave was thinking Friday for a long ride? Custer Loop is just too long for a group I think, so he was going to maybe do a loop we did at 2012 fall rally. 90-100 miles. There was a certain hill climb where a 1150 GSA made it but a KLR didn't. Must've been embarrassing for the KLR rider but I'm not naming names.  ;D

If you're bringing beer just for me I guess I"m committed now.

Sorry to hear that Mitch. Riding with pain is something that sucks. I live chronic pain every day of my life. I hurt, on the bike, I hurt off the bike, I hurt laying down, I hurt standing up............ Some days I just have to make the decision to not even ride.

If I'm gonna be in pain, I'd rather be in pain on a bike. I've just tried to find alternatives; bike set-up, slowing down, limiting fatigue as well as other things I can think of to change.

That being said, visit with your doctor and find out the answer to the crucial question, am i going to do more appreciable damage by riding? When you get the answer to that question its time to work on ways to address the changes you can make.

Hope all works out and that we see you in a few weeks. You could even catch a ride from Mitchell out if that would assist you.

Hey GB, thanks. I'm most certain that I will not make it. Got the word today that I will have to have surgery to remove the herniated part of the disk. At age 26, this sucks. I'm sorry to hear about your chronic pain. I sure hope it isn't as bad as mine currently. That would be no way to live.

Just to make this clear.  Hank sent me a text today about a post on our "Facebook Page."  The "poster" or "tweeter", whatever you call them, said they had heard a rumor that Mountain Meadows was closing for the year on Sept. 1st.  I called and found out that the people managing it right now are quitting/leaving on the 1st.  The owners will have someone handling the day to day business until new manager/s are hired.

So just in case you hear or read more, that's the inside scoop.  No worries, just hope they can cook!  LD

I forgot, Hank or someone, please post a comment on the Facebook page.  Thanks

The report is in. Surgery on my herniated disc this Thursday. 6 weeks recovery and 3 months no motorcycle. So hopefully we have a weak winter so I can get some Nov/Dec riding in. Haha. Doubt it. Wow. What a crappy way to end the riding season. I should be thankful though, I got some great riding in early spring, rode all summer, ran the trans SD, and I'm still alive. You guys all have fun west river. I'll be thinking of you all and look forward to the spring rally!

That being said, there's been a bit of talk between me a couple of others that at spring rally time doing the TSDT and the Northern part of the DAKAL, the part Hipster and I didn't get to this past spring. Stay tuned.

In the past, a few of the early birds ride together--
What time might those early birds be arriving at the campgrounds, with an intention to ride?
Will there be any kind of group ride originating on the 11th?
If so, please post an approx. start time, etc. if there are any thought of 'scouting' etc.
Otherwise, we will be a late-e-e-e afternoon show on Thursday...and ride N. Hills Thursday morning as well, etc.

I will be sponsoring a first time Dakota Dual Sport Rider--
My college comrade, (and fellow Marine) Armando is flying in from Baltimore on Tuesday evening;
we will be riding N. Hills on Wednesday (out of Sturgis, Exit 32) if anyone cares to join us...
probably be a 9ish start time, ride about 6-7 hours.
=Red Cutt, Camp Five, Bull Dog Canyon, Piedmont Trail for starters.  It will include many of the 8xxx trails (=permit trails), and other interconnecting trails.

Interested?
send me a note at
mjearl4@gmail.com  or 605.870.0012
if you would like an extra day of riding in the N. Hills prior to the official Fall Classic.

Lonesome Dave-or anyone else,
Do you have any coordinates on Horse Thief Cave?
and the other small, barred cave near Horse Thief Cave?

Follow this link for Erskine cave.  http://www.dakotadualsportriders.com/smf/index.php?topic=961.msg8521#msg8521

Horse Thief Cave is also known as Ice Cave.  However, there is also an Ice Cave near Jewel cave to the south.  I'm not sure which name is right, the old maps label it as Ice cave.  But, the Horse Thief name makes sense.  Horse thief's would put the stolen horses in the open top cavern and block the entrance/exit with branches.  They'd go find more horses while the others waited.

BCB1080, most bikes are smaller. But this past spring/summer rally we probably had more KLR's than anything else.  You shouldn't have any major problems except you'll be more tired by the end of the day!  Be sure and bring extra sleeping bag or really warm one.....running in the 40s at night.

He will arrive Sturgis ~4pm 11 Sept and will follow in trail with Armando and I Thursday evening or early Friday morning.
Our departure from Sturgis will depend on how much maintenance we have to do after two days of riding

I was up at Mountain Meadow today.  Last week my grandsons and I cleared a few trees blocking a very cool route I have planned.  Yesterday, Woody and I rode the entire loop.  Its only about 55 miles, but it took us right at 4 hours so we figured 5 to 6 hours with a big group.  Don't worry, its almost all big bike friendly with a bail out included.  The most difficult was right at the end, because of downed trees on the trail and you have to go around them on an incline.  The 4 hr time includes a little mapping, lingering at different spots and "lets go back" turn arounds and many, many gates.  However, since last week, another tree fell down and blocked the route again.  Woody and I were able to kick off most of the branches on the lower end of the log and then pickup the bikes and slide them across.  Those were 250s, I don't want to do that with 650s!!  So I went back up there today with the Jeep and cut a couple of more.  But hey, now we have firewood for camp.

I asked/told her about the discounts.  Basically, the old managers said they would give us a discount depending on how many people showed up.  We didn't actually set a rate, but 10 to 15 percent depending on how many.  She's not to worried about it and is more concerned about eating times.  I told her that she could expect maybe 10 or so people for Thursday night for supper.  For breakfast on Friday, Sat and Sunday around 20 or so.  Friday night would probably be zero and Sat night I just wasn't sure because there are no plans for supper that night.  And, lunches are a crap shoot, probably a few each day.

She just doesn't want people waiting excessive amounts of time for their food.  I told her that dual sporters are cheap at least this group is, and if she wanted to make 2 or 3 breakfast specials (biscuits & gravy and such) most would probably do that.  But she still plans on having the normal menu, it just might take longer.

It appears we have taken all their cabins and most of their campsites.  But lots of room for tents.

Speaking of tents.........the weather is suppose to be getting colder mid week and warming into the weekend.  They have already had a couple of mid 30 degree nights.  I would expect to see (or feel) one or two thirty degree nights this weekend, but for sure 40 degree nights.  In other words, bring extra clothes or sleeping bags.

For those who are riding here and won't have a lot of room to pack, let us know if you need something extra (another sleeping bag) I've already had a couple of volunteers for that sort of thing.  We just need to know.

One more thing......Don't forget to bring your items for the swap table.  (I'm still deciding if I'm going to sell my Wolfman Expeditions bags)

Let me know if extra gear is needed. I have a few extra sleeping mats and sleeping bags I can bring out if needed.

Lesson learned after lest year at Nemo, I have bought a propane heater for my van.

Dave, thank you so much for taking the lead on planning routes and clearing them. Its efforts like this that make these rallies a success.

There are others that should also be mentioned:
Gerry and Dave for making food
                Heidi for food
                Jim for leading rides
Hank for taking care of the website
                Alisa for food
and the list goes on. I know I've missed some but you know who you are. Remember to thank these people or what they do.

NAME/INTERNET HANDLE: Gerry1eye and Son David
NUMBER IN YOUR PARTY: 3
DATE ARRIVING: Friday morning
DATE LEAVING: Sunday night

SIZE OF RV: 26' mini-home

Hey guys, it was very very dusty when we went riding last Sunday so rain/snow is a good thing. Remember it takes an inch of rain to make a foot of snow, so 3" of snow is only a 1/4" of rain, which the warm ground will soak up and make for good riding.

In addition, the campground has electricity and I will bring several long extension cord and some 110volt electric heaters for any one to use - people staying in tents of course.

NDave thinks we should move the pulled pork cookout to Saturday night? comments? No problem for me as its ready to go, just needs to be warmed up.

Cheer up !!! the forecast is really fantastic for Friday afternoon thru Sunday afternoon  :o

Well put Gerry!  Who's dumb idea was this to have the fall rally a week earlier anyway?  I'm also bring extra extension cords and heaters, plus I have lots of firewood.  And, I'm bringing my chainsaw to go find some "pitch pine" to burn.  (It burns a lot hotter)

Its anybody's guess what Friday morning will bring, but I'm betting there won't be any riding before noon.  I talked with both NDave and Hank and we all agree, change the supper to Saturday night and probably do the planned rides on Saturday.  I thought maybe Friday afternoon we could at least ride gravel, without dust, maybe make our way over to "Red Bird Canyon" and then to Summit Ridge and back.  Or similar.

I just called Sharon up there, NO, all the cabins and main building are full.

As far as the cave......Towards the end of my proposed loop, it winds up around and above Ditch Creek Campground.  Very cool up there.  Just above one the Ditch Creek campsites, there's a rock out cropping/cave, or in other words, mountain lion home/cave/den.  If we have time, its a pretty cool place to check out......as long as no one is home!  First time we went there, it had cat scat and bat guano at the entrance.  The only way we found it, was from the other side of the valley, going up that trail, we stopped on a switch back.  One of us happen to look over that way to the west, the light and elevation was just right and there it was, the cave.  Of course, I've had this problem for many years.......lets go find it!  It took numerous attempts for us to find our way up there, much less the cave.  This was before accurate GPS.  Once we found it, that's when we discovered who lived there, and no one was home at the time, but we saw the cat scat.  After that, anytime we visited, we had the pistol ready!

It all makes sense now... couple years ago I was riding home at dusk and damn near got blown off the road by a car headed towards Ditch Creek campground. Must've been doing 75 mph, no headlights...

Fellow motorcycle lovers, I dumped the 990 and F'd up the front brake's master cylinder not to mention myself a little. I actually bruised my manhood; crazy I didn't think that was as possible as it is. My girlfriend appreciates the swelling. ah buzzing! On a positive note the weather is bad and I found a cheap trials bike from this millennium that is local...for Wyoming and I'm picking that SOB up Sunday!
If any body knows about trials bikes...(I'm a total NOOB). I'm planning to give 1500 for this:

http://wyoming.craigslist.org/mcy/4633503109.html

Let me know if I'm over paying/buying to small a bike. I just want to learn the basics play on my land then upgrade or sell depending on if I like it or not. Plus I think it would be fun to take camping and on road trips etc. Edit: I know its a little over book but it is hard to find a decent sub 2k modern trials bike.

Thanks.

I know nothing about trials bikes except I KNOW I would hurt myself, and I'm pretty sure I'd have a blast right up until that point.

I'd check all the normal bike stuff, and add in a good look underneath.....damaged cases, broken welds, or other signs of fatigue in the chassis. It looks clean like it could have been more of a conversation piece than used in competitions. Check out his other bikes, car, truck, etc to get a feel for potential maintenance trends. Ask questions. Lots of them.

I've wasted more on less.....how bad could it be? 8)

I'm going to look a little closer at the rally info, as I am currently in a figure 8 pattern on an unplated xr250 following a pw80 in first gear :). It would be nice to do some trails and might could pull it off with just a trail permit. Don't count me in, but don't count me out. You guys are a blast to ride with.

ps.  The snow is trying to stick here in Lead :-X

Have fun out there this weekend fellas! I'll be anxious for the reports back. Wish I could make it! My back is healing nicely, I'm going crazy at home though. 6 weeks at home doing nothing is torture for me. Anyhow, keep 2, or 1 on the ground and stay warm!

Well I thought the weather men was grandstanding when they talked about 12" of snow. This morning in Custer SD, we woke up to close to 8" of very wet snow and it is still coming. See attached picture out the back yard, at least 6 broken jack pine trees from the weight of the snow. We are really missing lumberjacks Josh and Ema.
I'm not sure what is happening in the Deerfield area, but their weather is usually worse than Custer?
The Sun will come out tomorrow and it will be dusty on Sunday, But no hail.  :o

We have about 3 inches on the ground here and still coming down hard. The wife's flights home are all delayed so we likely won't make it until tomorrow morning. She was supposed to be home by 1:00, won't be till later this evening. Hopefully we can get there tomorrow in time to ride with everyone. I'm sure you won't be taking off real early.......

Bcb 1080 your right it definitely is small.  We rode larger trials and they still feel small.  The power of trials is not intimidating.   I sold a beta and ssherco.  290s for 2200 each.  Check colorado or minnesota.  I would just ask the owner he has multiple trials bikes in the picture.  We have a gas gas dealer in rapid.  I would suggest bigger then 125 unless you weigh 125lol chcheck this one out and he has a cool two stroke looks mint

Yikes!
What happened to summer!
This morning it is 27F but clear skies.
My bed is still warm and toasty; not so sure about camping tonight!

Armand arrived Tuesday and we still managed 35 miles of Red Cut and Galena/Bear Den Mt.  The 'red' Gumbo was nearly impassable and required 'dabbing the foot' and a couple of stalled attempts prior to reaching the top.

We rode 120 miles on Wednesday beginning with the gravel across FT Meade to Bull Dog Canyon, Rumkle Rd, Bethleham Rd, Piedmont Tail, to an interior 8xxx trail back into the Dawson Lake Rd, out to Vanocker Canyon.  Eventually, we made our way by Gravel and asphalt to Silver City in the Fog, but the gravel was dry and we bombed along South, eventually joining the Mystic Rd going N...then the heavens opened up at 430 and we got a good dose of South Dakota mugly wx from Rocheford to Deadwood to Sturgis.

We are going on the plan that riding might start at 12 in Deerfield lake...joining you by KLR650 if the frost clears by 10 in Sturgis.
Otherwise we will be there ~9 for the departure on Saturday.

Here is a short video of the conditions:
