Title: Moab April 2016
Post by: Hank on December 15, 2015, 12:42:38 PM
Dates have moved, but are now locked in.

Arriving in Moab 4/23, leaving for home early 4/29 - so 5 days of riding (or whatever you want).

I have a condo reserved.  Its a bigger one - 1700 square feet with beds (if you consider the 3 sleeping pads) for 9 (see more thoughts on that below).

https://moabcondorentals.com/43243

No firm plans other than to go to Moab with dirt bikes and ride a lot of trails.   And grill steaks and drink, and maybe play poker.

The IN list as of 3/29:

Me (Hank)
Ryan (Ryani)
Cadet (Cadet1)
Paul (Bikeless)
Jay (Yakmulligan)
Lance (biker4ever)
Rob (Robmicgrn)
Ken (Chickenhauler)

Maybe list as of 3/29:
Dave (Lonesome)

Budget wise.. last year it cost us all in the 6-700 range for the same length of time for the entire trip, which is a real bargain.    IIRC lodging last year was 1300 split 4 ways.   Lodging is 2200 for the week with this place, so with 7+ that should cost less per person than we spent last year.
Gas might be cheaper.    Last year we didn't eat a single meal out, just cooked breakfast in, had a light lunch, and grilled at night.   Worked great.

If more than 9 want to come.. that's great, but someone will need to line up a 2nd place (I can help too).  There are still a lot available as of 12/15/15, but they are starting to book up.

If we end up with say 11 that want to go, I think it would be fair that 7 stay in this condo and 4 in the other (smaller) to keep the costs in line.  I'm just speculating that that'd be ok with the group, but if we keep lodging under 350/person it seems reasonable to me.

I could reserve a 2nd nearby condo, and cancel it before 30 days without charge I'm pretty sure.
If we end up with a dozen plus wanting to go, we're gonna need it.

Would love to do this but I am off to Austin for the Moto GP races earlier in the month. That will use up my monthly allowance plus some more.

Maybe next year.

Hank, I found the trail guide in my van the other day, if you'd like I could get it to Ryani and he can take it with him when you go.

Yeah give it to Ryan.. I've got my own copy but I'm sure he'd appreciate it.   Better come with next year!

I can rent a 2nd 3 bedroom in same area for same price, or a 2 BR for about 75%.  Can cancel with no charge as long as we're 30 days or more out.  Thoughts?

Does that mean you're IN?

Chickens are good.  We'll have a grill :)

OK cool.

That makes 9 IN and a few probables.   I think I'll reserve a 2nd spot.. I can always cancel it.

I got a second smaller condo lined up..

Waking this conversation up again.. any other takers?  Dave, are you IN?   Dr. P?
We're right at the point we need that second condo, but without more guys (or gals) 2 places might be a little expensive.  I have a while yet before the cancellation deadline gets here, but I don't want to be scrambling at the last second either.

It would also be great if someone else would take over that second reservation if we decide its needed.. :)

This is the 2nd condo:

https://moabcondorentals.com/32459   Sleeps 4 I think (6 if you want to snuggle).

That one is 1760 for the week.    If we just split all the lodging evenly, it'd be a total of about 4000, split however many ways.   13 guys is the sweet spot, one per bed which works out pretty cheap, 307 each.  Even 10 would be reasonable at 400 each I think.  The whole trip would still probably be in that 6-700 range depending on how gas is split, and we have cheap gas in our favor.  Everything else is cheap if we eat in, which is more fun anyway.  These places have nice decks, grills, well stocked and equipped kitchens.   Paul will cook omelets everyday.  I haven't told him that yet but he will.

I guess I'd like some opinions and it'd be nice to know what lodging budget everyone is OK with.   I'd spend 500 for 8 guys and have all kinds of room.. another 100 bucks is fine for an annual EPIC trip like this, but I don't want anyone pissed off at me because I bit off more than we should chew too :)

I may be interested.  What's the scoop.  Who's hauling bikes you guys coming through rapid? I can sleep on the floor. 🤓

Rob and Ken are the guys you want to talk to about ride sharing.    One of the east river / MN groups might come through too, probably hasn't been discussed much yet, but both those guys are local to you.

The NE SD / ND / MN group is Me, Jay, Lance, Paul, and Duffer if he's in.   I can haul 4 bikes/guys/gear.  Ryan, Cadet and Travis are SE SD and I'm assuming they'll be traveling together.

Ken (chickenhauler) and I will be leaving from Rapid City. We are playing with options for hauling down to Moab, but we have access to trucks and trailers no problem, and room for at least 2 more most likely.

Haven't been watching this very close lately but the date change, brings 'some' uncertainty when committing to this trip.  You can put me down on the 1/25 probably list.  If me going creates the need fro a second condo or what not I will sit out this year.
To give you an idea how well Hank is at reserving condos, here's a pic looking out to the La Sal's mtn from the condo living room last year.
Bring spare parts too!  Think I broke something everyday, including my tooth the one day!!!

Clay, that's hilarious!  I didn't get it at first, I just thought the video was funny.  Then watched the wreck again.  OMG!

The only thing funnier would be the prairie dog saying; Jim, Jim, Jim, Dan!  I can relate to that one.

Okay, did I misunderstand.  I thought a bunch of people from this forum went to Moab last week.  I was sitting around every evening last week receiving picture texts from apparently imaginary friends.  Where are they now?  Were they real?  Hell, I heard a guy even broke his arm.  Who?  Nothing.  Us boring people that have to work and like sitting around watching you fun people need  some pictures, video, stories, and Moab porn!  Come on.....
Title: Re: Moab April 2016
Post by: Hank on May 02, 2016, 09:53:40 PM
Its all top secret.  If you're not a member of our secret club you don't get details.

:evil  Actually I didn't see too many pictures get taken.   Hopefully there are a few more that will get posted.
Lance broken his arm.. stable fracture of the radius, no cast required but he only got to ride 2 days which was a bummer.   He attempted to scale a rock face with his wheels in two different non-agreeable paths and fell about 6 feet onto some rocks which turned out to be not soft.
Ironically Paul looped his bike in this exact spot last year, and on the difficulty scale its about a 3 out of 10.. just smallish rock face but it did have some crappy deep sand in front of it which seems to jack up the approach.

Other than that, there were no major incidents, but there was some good material for stories.  Cadet gave us a good show "breaking in" his brand new Beta.  Apparently the break in procedure for Italian bikes involves looping it on a steep rock climb then watching them slide down to the bottom on its side.
Ken performed a similar stunt on his 690 but it wasn't as tall of a rock so he scored lower.

Paul went over his handlebars once, but protected his bike from damage with his body, which we all thought was particularly noble.

Ryan had a day of jetting practice, but other than that, I don't think he did anything noteworthy.  I did see him fall down a couple times.

Jay FINALLY wrecked his 500 a few times so I was OK with riding it FINALLY.   This was important, at least to me.

Robert fell down in the sand a few times and a tree tried to kill him once.  Hopefully Ken will post pictures of "Robert's Tree".   That was actually pretty funny.

I crashed in numerous stupid ways, including rolling backwards down an easy climb and crashing backwards into a fence.  Nobody saw any of that though, yeah right.

Other than that, the condo was nice, the eats were good, and some of us enjoyed too much whiskey a few times.    All in all, it was a great time and I'm already looking forward to the next trip!   New friends were made and new stories were written!

And where are the pictures, anyway?
