Title: Early or Late June Trans SD Adventure Trail Group Ride
Post by: mitchn06 on February 08, 2016, 07:42:04 PM
Hey Guys, been thinking of doing some type of group ride across the state. I know there is a group of guys going to Moab in late April and I myself doing a trip to the Ozarks early May. I was thinking about either before or after the DDSR. I believe it can be done in 4 days of riding for sure from start to home on the last day.Camping along the way. If anybody else is interested.....Chime In!

I would be interested, before the June DDSR weekend would be better for me. I was planning on doing a week after the DDSR weekend on exploring the dirt roads of eastern Wyoming.

Here's a couple good books if you want to ride dirt roads in Wyoming.

The first one is an old book, so a few of those roads are now paved. I've noticed more pavement even in the last few years.

Thanks Jim I ordered both books. I like old houses and old schools. Hope there are some out there.

I would be up for it as well. East to West? Weather would play a big part for me as everything I have read says that the TSDAT route turns to S$%* with any kind of moisture.

yes, east to west probably. We could probably  pull an all-nighter at ryani's place, then saddle up in the am? ok maybe not, but meet in Mitchell none the less if you want to do the full route. I did a part of it a few years ago and started around 1pm in yankton. by 1pm the next day we were in kennebec. I swear we were following a road grater all day for 2 days, so it is possible to run it faster. Last fall i finished it, starting in Wasta around noon and ending in Kennebec just after sunset, and i was booking it.

Maybe not all nighter but a half-a-nighter would be fine!  We have plenty of room. I'll put out the tent space sign the week before.

I did it in 28 hours (round trip from Rapid, took pavement east) but those were a couple pretty long days. 3-4 days would be more enjoyable I think.

The latest version that Jim referenced above ends south of Scenic near Bigfoot Road. BIA 2 was on the original route but, is being paved. I need to get back out & scout another off pavement route to Custer.

For those that have ridden the TSDAT from Kennebec to Midland via the North. You might enjoy the alternate "blue" route south of the Interstate. Although, with a group it could be a pretty long day. I've ridden it twice solo, & it takes about 7 hours.

Camping is available at several places along the way. Gross, NE has a population of 2! Has a steakhouse & free camping across the street in the park. It's a fun place to stop & enjoy the atmosphere.

Consider a stay at the Stroppel Hotel in Midland.  Miss Vicki enjoys tired, dirty DS riders!

http://www.southdakotamagazine.com/a-spa-at-midland

Four of us, riding off pavement to Alaska, will be on the TSDAT in early June. Hope to see you along the way.

Ok. Dates. Memorial Day is Monday May 30. For myself, that is a paid day off, that means I have an automatic 3 day weekend. I would like to incorporate that into the ride be it the 27th thru the 30th or the 28th thru the 31st. Heck it may only take 3 days to complete and get back home. Thoughts on this??

This is starting to look like it might work for me with those dates.
Will you start at Yankton?
I have a place to camp by Gross on the river but but might be west of there at end of first day.
If it rains the part from Vedel to Gross is impassable.

Ok, so starting out on Friday the 27th. I'm thinking I will start out in Mitchell and ride the route from there. Or just booking lit to Yankton, depending on other riders. The first time I did it, we made it about 10 miles west of Pickstown where we picked up dinner the end of day 1 where we started in Yankton at 1pm. My guess is we will make it a bit further than that. Maybe Buryanek or Snake Creek around the big Mo and Hwy 44. I don't really know.

I would give the folks that have not done this trip the pleasure of the James River valley. I really like that area and ride it often. Slabbing to Yankton would mean missing all the Hudderite scenery. They own 90% + off the river bottom from Mitchell to Yanton.

I would like to ride the entire length just so I could say i did it......... Mitchell to wherever the current edition ends. Anybody have any idea of dry days needed prior to beginning so it doesn't turn into a mud-fest? Puddles are one thing but miles of gumbo? No thanks  :(  .

It's a pretty area. I rode it during a very heavy downpour. I stopped under some trees along the river to see if the rain would let up. It didn't, but it was kind of a zen-like experience sitting there watching the rain fall on the river.

Zen-like and wet.  ;D

We serve natural gas to all the colonies in the river bottom.

Great bunch of guys! And if you bring some cigarettes you can trade for turkey jerky and chicken fryers.  Good stuff!!

Harry Potter: I will not be doing this trip this time as I have to work that weekend. I really wanted to but couldn'nt make it work. I would like to make a day trip some weekend to this and something a bit different on the way back for the guys in this area. I know the James Valley Cycle Club has tried to do a group ride several times.

Ryan: I take care of folks from 3 of the river valley colonies. They truely are great people.  No one should believe the things they hear. Like everyone else they have their issues.

When they come to the hospital they often bring baked goods, smoked poultry, and veggies.

they are my relatives, well, distant now. But, my great grandfather, Eli Wipf, left the colony in the teens. He was a fairly successful business man in Mitchell in the 20-40's. I recently refinished his old desk for use in my home office, but that is a different story:

I still have been unable to down load or see the route so if someone can post something different from the ADVRider post it would be great. What bike are you taking Ryan? Is this route to bad ass for a beemer?

Jeez, pretty soon the whole DDSR membership will be going. I'll have to see what I am doing Memorial day weekend, maybe I'll tag along.

It would be good to find a different route from Rockyford to Buffalo Gap, that is mostly paved now. Maybe a couple scouting rides are in order.

Harry Potter,
This route has been completed manyntimes by guys with less skills than you have on the same bike. There have been a couple of crashes as well, but don't let that affect your decision.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it on my S10.

Grubbie, I put wolfman side racks and a tail rack on my DR. With the wolfman waterproof side bags and duffle bag I can haul tent and all gear in waterproof bags. As for the right gear I still am not quite there, sleeping bag is easy but not found right tent yet. Now I will let Ryani tell us more about gear .

Think light weight hikers's back packing tents, bags, and air mattress. REI has a better selection than Cabellas. Cabellas stuff is to big and bulky but they do have a good selection of dry bags. Water and protein bars even if we're eating out.

I agree REI has the best tents for the $$. Be sure to spend the extra few bucks for a ground cloth. Even a cheap tarp will do the trick.

Cabella's has a better selection of slingshots than REI. If you don't know why you need to carry a slingshot, well then I guess you've never accidentally staked your tent in a plague-infested prairie dog town.

this trip is going to be epic. my tapatalk alerts must not be working right, i missed out on 3 days worth of BS  ;D not necessary to bring food if you dont' want to, i mostly just snack on stuff on  these types of trips anyhow. the last trip i did, i didn't poop for 3 days!! then i had stopped and had Mexican. Fixed!! As far as tents go, i tried to do a 1 man tent before, but remember, it is one man and one man's gear, better off getting a 2 or even 3 person with vestibules. as far as the tracks go, i can email them to whomever needs/wants them. just send me your e-mail or PM me or whatever. It looks like we have options for this route, the first option is the Yankton SD or NE option, the NE side is fun. never have done teh SD option. the second option we have is North of i90 or South of i90, i have done the North i90 part and it is mostly gravel roads, somewhat boring, but has its good spots (bad river Road is pretty dang fun), not sure on the souther half.

I agree REI has the best tents for the $$. Be sure to spend the extra few bucks for a ground cloth. Even a cheap tarp will do the trick.

I've never done the research myself to prove this, but I've read that REI is one of the biggest contributors to causes and campaigns to close anything and everything to dirt bikes, jeeps, and quads... so if true, spend your dollars wisely!

I have been a member of REI since like 84 and never have I seen any agressive literature in  my mailbox. I do often get mailers for protec tion of wild land but none that is even remotely aggresive. That is not to say that they don't do that out the backdoor. I think if you knew  where half of your spent dollars went you would never spend a dime anywhere. Every corporation has their causes.
I do busyness with them cause they have GREAT customer service and great products. I could do business with Cabelas which is turned into a high priced Pamida with crap customer service, and, I dont like where some of their "round up the dollar" cash goes either.

I hope it aint so but untill I see agregous aggressive campaigns I'll continue to do business with them.
I am open to read and look at anything that may change my mind, my mind is one that is always open.

Hey Kyle, from Mitchell to Pickstown is roughly 210 miles and at about 30-40 mph that will probably put us close to a day with stops and breaks. So to answer your question... Right around pickstown.

Whoops I thought I was already in on this. As long as theres no horse trails im in! :) Also I did the trail from Mitchell to Yankton on my big bike and even with stops to see old friends it only took about 4 hours I think. I averaged maybe 55 mph. There were some 70mph sections of it.

Haha. This is seriously turning into a DDSR huge group ride. With GB a maybe, that brings the list, including all maybes, to a hefty 15 riders. Damn.
All subject to change though of course.

There was a member named Jared, way back when, like the first year, that printed up some really cool stickers, but he hasn't been around forever.    I might have a few in an envelope yet and I work with a guy that does sticker printing.. I'll bet he could duplicate.   I'll see what I have.

Hey Guys,

I just got back from another epic adventure to Mexico's Eastern Sierra Gorda Mountians! Just catching up on what's going on here & ADV.

Glad to hear y'all are doing a group ride on the TSDAT.

Camping....You can camp in Gross, NE. (free) in the park, across the street from the Nebrask-Inn Steakhouse. Not too far of a walk after a few refreshments. ;D You can also camp at the state campground near the dam. State sticker & fees apply.

On the West side of the river is a nice campground that used to be run by the COE...now took over by the state & they charge a fee :( No food nearby,  so bring your own. I've picked things up in P'town & hauled them to the campground.

Location is N43.09937 W98.76885

Camping in Kennebec at the KOA...or head to the Grasslands & camp about anywhere.

Take the route South of I-90. With a group it'll take most of a day.

Stay in Midland at the Stroppel Hotel....Hot mineral baths in the Hotel & nice place to eat across the street. Both, very resonable priced.

Johnny come lately here. I've been sitting in the weeds watching this. I can't do the spring meet, but this might be possible. Let me try to summarize: starting from Mitchell on Friday the 27th, time yet to be determined?  Heading off God knows where, mostly gravel and some trails, camping along the way, returning back towards Mitchell in approximately one week?  It sounds like there are a lot of people coming and going from the ride which is cool.  Is this the gist of it?

Thanks!

Tim

I plan on leaving Mitchell Friday and back in Rapid City Sunday. I don't think it takes more than 2-3 days to do the TSDAT (that might be pushing it). I think Bogus Jim did it in 12 hours total or something.
Title: Re: Early or Late June Trans SD Adventure Trail Group Ride
Post by: Bogus Jim on April 16, 2016, 05:37:36 PM
It was more than 12 hours. But I bet if I had a 1190 I could do it in 12. I've read you can just hold the throttle wide open and the Traction Control will pick the appropriate speed for the conditions.

Jim, You crack me up! I looked to see if I could use that technique on my Tenere but my owners manual said that only works on Austrian machines.

As for the plan, I have no part in the planning of this but this is what I believe.
Leave from Mitchell Friday morning and be done by Monday. Making it a long Weekend. Camping along the way. Some campsites are a short distance from food while others are not. So I would plan on packing food for those times where it is not available. As small Stove and a can of Dinty Moore is always a good and easy plan for such times. I do like eat a good lunch at a slop shop during the day and eat lite at night. This route doesn't always take you to the vacinity of good grub. I say plan for anything and adapt.

I'm sure Ryan will chime in if he has a better idea on these things.

Correct GB, leave Mitchell Friday morning, camp along the way, get food at gas stations along the way or whatever, bring snacks, I'm opposite of GB, I like to eat light during the day and big at night, otherwise my body gets tired in the afternoon. There will be groups coming and leaving throughout the weekend, adaptation is a must, dinty Moore is a great backup as is a can of tuna, bowl of easy mac. Whatever you can beat up or add hot water to. Plan is to be done with the ride on Sunday, Monday would be a return home day.

My thought is if we do breakfast, do it at I90 TS. Perkins has a tendency to be quite slow in service. Just my 2 bits.

Yes Dan. I'll drop off some stickers.  We usually get to Mitchell a couple times a month. I've got your phone number....I will call or drop you a text msg next time we come over.

Also, before your departure I will send the latest updated tracks.  On the southern route out of Kennebec, I need to check out a washout, to see if it's been repaired since last fall. If it hasn't, I'll have a go-around. I'm also planning to redo the far west section from Scenic to Custer.

Getting pretty excited for this. Looks like I'm in! Gathering up camping gear and getting the DR650 set up. Was gonna buy some tires to replace the stock trail wings, but probably gonna have to run 'em. Lots of good tread left but not the greatest tire for mud.....or loose stuff....or gravel......or grass....or big rocks.

It seems like a lot of people are going. Ryani's yard is going to be a tent city. Maybe there should be a sign up thread like the rally? I would be interested to know where everyone is coming from so those coming from the west could ride out to Mitchell together. There seems to be a lot of people, and I am not sure who they all are, or where they are coming from. Just a thought. Hank ?

There are plenty of us from Mitchell with several yards that can accommodate tents. There is also a couple shops in case any last minute fixes need doing. We should try to get out for a beer Thursday night. I can furnish the tipsy van with a driver so no one has to drink and ride. Or grill some grub at my shop. Let me know what you all wanna do.
It is an easy walk from my shop to Ryan's place or you can camp at my shop. Wizard also stated he has tent space a very short distance away.

If you think we will end day 1 around Gross I have a place to camp about 5 miles from Gross on the Missouri river bank.
We have a cabin with a grill and showers with plenty of tent space. I could stock the fridge with burgers and refreshments or eat in Gross and motor down. I think Friday nights are steak night at the Nebraska Inn.
Just thought I would offer. If we are faster than planned we may want to keep going.

Mark that is an awesome offer and may be something to really consider. Should wait on the planners of this ride to decide.

As for packing food. I always find on a ride like this its always good to pack a bit of grub because you never know when it will be convenient to get to a store or food joint. I have found on rides like this the riders will figure out what works best for the group as far as food goes. Things are always a bit flexible.

I thought I would just offer and let the planners decide.
If we are making good time we could be well past Gross.
If its wet we wont make Gross!!!!
May be something that has to be decided on the fly.

Not a bad idea at all, hope for the best, plan for the worst. Bring whatever food you can cook over a flame whether that be from a can or whatever. With the number of riders anticipated, I just can't say for sure where we will end up. Thank you for offering up. Part of the adventure is all of the unknowns. Realistically I think it could happen as I had planned on SScalp creek recreation area as night 1 end, which is only 35 miles from gross NE and probably closer to Sandhills rider's place. Play it by ear? Last time I did it I got food at pickstown and headed to S scalp creek.

Remember, you might have to commit to a location on the first night wherever it might be.  A few are leaving the west side of the state on Friday and meeting the group towards the end of the day one.  Just saying.

Ya. You are right Dave. I don't care where, if guys want to camp at Sandhills riders spot on the river or at S scalp Rec area. Either one is fine by me. How far is your cabin from S Scalp Sandhill?

I went out to check the progress of the washout (location N43.67362 W99.99389, also marked by an X on the tracks) on the Alternate Southern Route from Kennebec to Midland. It's still impassable. I've re-routed around it. It's too bad 'cause this is a really nice section of trail. The rancher I talked to said it would be repaired by mid summer.

You might consider doing the northern portion. It's 105 miles vs the southern routes 192 miles.

Due to BIA 2 being paved along with other issues, I re-routed the far western portion, from Scenic to Custer. I verified the route by riding it this weekend. It has a little more pavement than I'd like.

I'm attaching the updated tracks.

Awesome Jack, I appreciate the work you put into the TSDAT!

I'm on the probably not going to make it list too. I have way too many irons in the fire right now and its only like 10 days away.

The cabin is 5 miles north east of Gross on a dead end road in our pasture. Its 5 miles down river from the dam just in Nebraska. I would guess 20 miles from south Scalp.
You have to go back through Gross to go North or west.
If we have others coming in late one of the public campgrounds would be easier for them to find.
The road is gravel all the way in but it would be fun to watch you guys ride the big bikes out if it rained.
If we need a absolute pick wet or dry you might want to use a public place.
Mitchin06 pm me and I can call you if you want more details.

After talking with some of the other riders, I think camp for the first night will be at S. Scalp creek recreation area. It is primitive and we can supply up/gas up in pickstown before heading to camp.

Good deal. It's nice to know where we'll be. I'm going to try to hit the trail in Yankton after work. I'll leave SF around 3. Anyone know about how long it takes to get from Yankton to S Scalp on the trail? I've done the bit from Mitchell to Yankton, but don't want miss out on the dirt I haven't seen yet. Is that too ambitious? Will I be okay on my own?

I found my tracks from a few years ago... it was 148 miles from Yankton to S Scalp, it took me 5 hours including a 26 minute stop in Pickstown for gas and snacks, and a stop in Devil's Nest for site seeing. It was muddy when I rode it, so you can probably average a little better.

Here's what google has to say... I have no idea what average speed they are using. Sunset is 8:58 - I assume I'll be in Yankton a little before 5. I may have to hit more paved than I'd like.

From what is forecasted as of now for Pickstown area, we might run into some rain, this is not a deal breaker for me as the rest of the weekend looks fairly promising. With that said, if you are committed, bring some rain gear. Also, we are in SoDak, so weather may change for the better or worse in an instant. As of now I do not have any type of back-up plan. I am certainly open to suggestions and am really hoping it's just a quick morning shower and moves out.

You got that right Dave.

Looking at the long range forecast, the beginning of the weekend isn't looking good. If its gonna be a wash I'm not sure if I'm gonna ride. I'm no fair weather rider but the idea 15 or so riders, many with big bikes over slimy surfaces could be a chore. Crossing the Dejong Ranch in a downpour, or after one, would be ugly at best.

I hate to sound like a buzzkill but it is what it is. I'll make a more informed decision the closer we get.

If this washes out Bonnie thinks we should take the tent and come to the hills for the weekend.
I was on the Nebraska side of the Missouri today and its going to have to dry some to make those trails passable.

Absolutely.  If you want I'll set up the camper too.  When we added the well cistern last year we also set up a camper pad.  You can haul your bikes or whatever.

I think it's a good idea looking @ the forecast. I want to do the ride, but not fight severe weather and gumbo on the bigger bike. Mud doesn't bother the smaller bikes. And there isn't much mud in the hills the begin with.

I have lots of camper space.  On tap water would be limited.  Electricity should be easy, I have that wired into the barn now.

I just warned Elisa........something might be happening at our place.  She said sounds like fun and started worrying about food.  I told her we just need to worry about beer.
Title: Re: Early or Late June Trans SD Adventure Trail Group Ride
Post by: Lonesome Dave on May 24, 2016, 02:38:33 PM
It's starting to look like the planned ride is starting to fall apart because of weather.  I've had several phone calls already this morning, asking if this is real?  Hell yeah, I love parties!  My plans for this weekend included coffee, beer, & riding.  Not necessarily in that order.  Grubbie called to say he has lots and lots of hamburger that he can bring.  Lisa postponed her trip to Sam's club today to see if this develops into anything.  I can borrow another grill and get a couple of large propane cookers for breakfast(s).  Or, we just ride over to Sugar Shack.

For those of you that don't know, I live up Nemo Road west of Rapid City.  We have plenty of room for tents and/or campers.  Everything is already mowed and level.  So if plan "A" falls through or needs modified, the "east side" can ride or drive out to the west side.  And we'll do something here.  I'll figure out a fire pit by then.

If it starts to look like more than a few people, I've got a deal already set up with Time Tool rental for a free tent.

And don't forget, I have a few trials obstacles already setup in the camping area.  I have doctor that lives next to me and an orthopedic surgeon behind me and of course EMS is only a phone call away!  What could go wrong!

Cole and myself are heading to Ryan's place after dinner, probably won't arrive till maybe 9. Harry Potter is meeting up in the morning. For the most part the group fell apart due to weather concerns which is unfortunate but understandable. Breakfast is at 745 at Marlins Friday morning though. FYI.

That is what I know this far. Several riders will be meeting up at camp tomorrow evening as well.

The Mornin of the trip started out a bit soggy, but quickly dried up (dried the riders out) after the sun peeked out.

Things got a little muddy after Yankton, this stuff was the stuff GB warned us about. Rear wheels got locked up and a Buell clutch got fried

(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/2d2a1c4825ba680b018bb9e015cb3da8.jpg) we made it to camp that night and got all set up and ate, had a blast chatting into the night before we retired to our tents. Around 4am, the storms rolled in. Loud thunder claps and lightning that lit up all the land was right over us. It rained into the early morning until about 9am(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/aa305fbff30521748f8a3a7561832584.jpg)
Breakfast was had in the shelter of our tents. We regrouped and packed up. The roads were soupy sloppy and we decided to try to buzz west to drier lands before hopping on the trail again. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/4600d53f5dd23119f36bc00c21cfda2d.jpg)
We got to hwy44 and hopped back in the trail there. Lunch was had at Hamill. It was at this point we decided to keep pushing west instead of north. Not many more pictures of this day as it was lost to the concrete slab. HP wanted to see more of the landscape, so he branched off on his own for the afternoon only to meet up again later. We ended up frantically making it to camp at Sage Creek shortly before sunset and about an hour later Harry Potter shows up. It was this night the mighty bison crept through camp. Scenic was the first stop of that morning. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/f7a60eec6ca3e0141872123abf41a171.jpg)
Ryan decided to slowly make his way back home at this point and Kyle, HP and myself proceeded to sheep mountain to have a see. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/01596776f4f741ae53be067b1bc9a405.jpg)
HP took off and Kyle and myself relaxed a bit on the top before taking back off south through Rockyford, redshirt and hermosa. Lunch was provided to Kyle and myself in Rapid where my wife and daughter were staying. I have several other relatives that live there as well. Kyle took a short nap before lunch, then my 2 cousins, Kyle and myself took off again into the BHNF where we put on another 45 miles of trails and ended up at the sugar shack for burgers and beers. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/a35f71740e3bfad364fc68c1b081da63.jpg)We camped up the road off of 642 for the night, then parted ways Monday morning for the trip home.  Thanks to everybody who participated in the event. I had a blast and know others did as well.

Glad I was able to part of it. We need to do another ride sometime when I am on a more appropriate machine for the conditions.
As for the Bison in Sage Creek, that is almost a daily occurance. Wizard (Paul) and I have stayed there many of time and it never gets old to see them wander thtough. Just give them the space where they want to go and don't interfere. They will leave you alone.
