Title: Spring Rally 2018
Post by: greatbuffalo on January 21, 2018, 08:06:38 PM
Just want to start a discussion on the Spring Rally. As usual we meet the 2nd or third weekend of June.

As has been experienced in the recent past, things fill up more quickly every year, so we need to decide on a weekend fairly soon.

Just talked to Michelle at F N F and she stated that the June 7 - 11 and 14 - 17 are still fairly wide open. the 22nd thru the 25th is not.

I am scheduled to work the 14th - 17th but may be able to get that changed.

So lets have a discussion of ideas and lets figure out what works best for most.

June 7th weekend works best for me.

I will be attending the Black Hills Roundup II with a group from fjrforum.com  in Spearfish June 26th through July 1st.  We will be riding the DakAL out of Spearfish on dualsport the 26th and returning on the 29th to join in with the other FJR riders telling tall tales and hoisting a few cold ones.  I don't know if I can spring two Black Hills trips in one month but if I could, earlier would be better.

I will try to fit it in whenever it happens this year. Would like to attend one while not injured or before moving.

Early seems to work for most. Probably less people in the hills then to.
We can make either work.

First off I made a mistake it will be 7th - 10th.

Just talked to Gary at F N F and he said this week end is tstill pretty open but encouraged everyone to call soon for reservation. The following weeks are near full and this weekend is beginning to fill. So if you want a cabin especially, call soon.

Scratch that last comment.  I fixed the problem.  Since I create the motorcycle class schedule and I don't want to teach that weekend I guess the best solution is to just cancel the class.   I'm in!  See you all in June!    :cheers

anyone bringing along a non dual sport?  I think it would be hard not to ride a road with curves being that close.

I might be easily persuaded into going a day early to tear up some blacktop with the 999 or Hypermotard.

I already posted this in the ORA thread, but thought I'd post here too.  Just a possible idea.

ORA has a Poker Run coming up on June 10th at Nemo Guest Ranch.  I attended one of these last year with family and grand kids.  They have lots of prizes at the end (3 pm).  Grand daughter won a new helmet that she is still very proud of.  It had good trails and is a mix of ATVs and dirt bikes.

I posted this to get it "out there."  But, it is also the last day of our spring rally this year.  Sunday's are usually pretty quiet at the rally, so maybe this might be fun for some of us to attend who don't leave early for home.  And, to help support ORA.  ORA's schedule for this event works around the lazy attitude we have on Sunday morning.  In other words, this might work for us.  I would have posted their flyer, but I don't know how.  So see below, please.

For details, visit:

where might that more detail be located?  I tried to checkout FB but I'm so out of touch with that I may have missed it.  Only poker run on the site of theirs is from 2014.

Not sure I'd be up for staying another day due to a long drive home, but I am towing a rolling hotel so my arm might be twisted...

So would this be like a Sunday ride before loading up and heading out or a full day ride?

I'm going to be there a day early. Will likely ride tarmac before, but might have my arm twisted to ride some on Sunday also.

I actually put my VFR on the chopping block (and decided to keep my 1190).  But, that said, I'm sorta asking a premium for it and it might not sell.
So, to put it succinctly, I have no idea when I'll be out or what I'll bring, but riding some twisties sounds real fun!

If anyone is thinking about riding there, there is a group of three of us leaving from the Fargo area and taking gavel/backroads there. We did this in 2015 I think it was. It's a great time. We will have an xr600, klr, and a drz making the trip.

Now that is cool shit right there.  A former coworker and I will also be leaving from the Fargo area but we will have the bikes loaded up on a trailer.

Last fall I rode the DakAL with a guy that was probability 70 or close to it.  He rode his CRF250L from the Twin Cities area, rode the 900+ mile DakAL, and then back to the cities.  I felt a little inadequate showing up with my XR650L in the back of the pickup.  :-[

While a cool idea...I wont be up for it this time as I'm RVing it.  being that you are from around Fargo....maybe another trip later would work to join you in that style of ride...?  I'm only 2+ hours from Fargo...and looking to ride some more this year.

After all the talk of riding asphalt I am thinking of leading an asphalt ride of some of my favorite roads in the hills. I think 6 or 8 bikes is a good number for such a ride. If there are much more than that we could split up into 2 groups if someone else would like to lead one. There are also those that may not like my loop and want to do there own thing. Whatever works.

I was thinking Friday or Saturday for this. Let me know of your interest in such a ride and if you have a road you really want to ride.

I believe the asphalt loop may be better than ever. rumor has it the county paved Rochford to Deerfield?  I'll check it out this weekend to be sure.

I think an asphalt ride on Friday might work for me.   My tentative plan for now is to ride my 1190 out early Thursday and just stay through Friday night.

There is a poker ride for my uncle here on Sunday (he has cancer) that I want to participate in.

Just a heads up from the 3 guys riding in from the Fargo area.  We plan on leaving Saturday morning and running straight through to get there Saturday night.  Unpaved other than gas stops, with a little luck we'll see you all around the fire that evening.   By the way, we are the same group that had the klr lose its drain plug a couple of years ago.  Thanks again for the plug and oil.  Good luck to the others riding in.

I finally got out today and rode, with no other purpose than DDSR rally.  I've actually been out only two times before, once with grandson and last week on a training mission for the "Dakota 600."

Anyway, I found some new trails last year by accident and thought they would be fun for DDSR.  I've been working on my basic plan for a week or two, but today I headed out to put it all together.  And, to make sure the different trails were open.  It was a beautiful day and I was about the only one out in the sticks.

Although the group has traveled parts of these different routes, the basic plan is to head west out of fish & fry over the hill and turn south towards Custer peak.  We can stop there if you like.  Continue south to Roubaix lake area.  Go back in at Killgren road and work our way south to Rochford Road area and Riley trail head.  We'll cross Rochford road and head up into some new areas.  Brad has taken us through some of that area before, but this is different.  It has some really fun trails and a look out that looks back towards Nemo rock cliffs.  From there we head south and east eventually coming out on Hwy 385.  Will cross the road and start working our way back towards Fish & Fry on that side of the highway.  I haven't planned that part yet, but I have traveled that side a lot and will figure out something.

Today I found lots of water running down the two track trails and lots of green, green, and more green everywhere.
I'm pretty happy with the route and I think people will like it.

Brad and I are also talking about doing a route south of Sheridan Lake road.  Main problem is taking the Highway all the way over to start.  We'll see what everyone wants to do.

Road Construction ALERT!!!
For those of you wanting to do paved canyons---

Vanocker Canyon started a paving project today, Tuesday, 5 June.
The Start point is ~2 miles N of the South End of Vanocker Canyon for ~8 miles, ending at the entrance for the Wonderland Cave.
You can expect a 20+ minute delay, depending on when you arrive at the flagman position and how long it has been since the follow-me-truck was at that stop point.

Vanocker Canyon update:
They have almost completed the first layer of asphalt on both lanes of the Vanocker Canyon construction that I previously described.
I talked to the flagger, they are going to be laying down another layer on top of the new asphalt = at least two more days of road construction.

US385 S of Sheridan Lake
Another choke point is on US385 S of Sheridan Lake Road.
There was a flagger there stopping traffic going South.
