Title: June 2018 Sign Up
Post by: Hank on March 28, 2018, 08:12:31 AM
The 2018 Dakota Dual Sport Riders June rally will once again be held in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!  Camping will be at the Fish 'n Fry campground just south of Deadwood, SD:

http://www.FishNFryCampground.com

Location is here:

We will be staying on the Hillside Loop once again.

Dates are June 7, 8, 9 and 10, 2018.  You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, June 7, departing on Sunday, June 10. Weather should be dry and warm - avg highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s,  BUT, this is South Dakota...if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  ;-)  Cell service has been OK in the campground the last couple years, and its only 2 miles to the top of Strawberry Mountain if you do have trouble.

Entry Fee: FREE!
Camping: Tents - $?? per person/night, RVs/Campers - $?? per night.  You will pay the campground when you arrive, no pre-payment required. I will reserve all tent sites from entries on this sign-up thread. FnF have cabins available as well, but you will need to reserve those yourself by calling Gary or Michelle. Also please call and reserve RV sites on your own.  Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get the special discount!

Fish 'n Fry phone number:   (605) 578-2150

We will have enough room for plenty of tents.  RV sites near the tent sites are at a premium and need to be reserved as far in advance as possible, although there will be plenty of RV spots available away from "ground zero".

The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it).  All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.

Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc.  There will be something for everybody!

The Fish 'n Fry campground (FnF) has full showers (coin operated, bring a couple of quarters if you don't want to smell like a dirty biker!), real bathrooms (with sinks & mirrors!), a general store (with beer), a small restaurant (with beer on tap!) and a grill and shelter we can use if it rains. 24hr gas station/convenience store right across the street, and Deadwood is only 10 minutes away. There are picnic tables, but if you want a guaranteed seat by the fire you better bring your own.

Electricity is available to charge cell phones, iPods, etc., however it is outside, so use at your own risk!

Firewood from outside the campground is not permitted (sometimes an exception is made for us DDSR folks, though).
The FnF has bundles of wood for $??

Limited food will be provided, but plan on fending for yourself during the day.
- Organized food TBA

Cars, trucks & bike trailers will have room to park, but could be a ways away from your campsite.

I wont be camping, I live 25-ish minutes from the FNF, but I'm damn sure planning on showing up for some rides and whatever festivities may be available.  I'll ride there and back on the bike I'll be using for the rides (250 XCW). I'm riding by myself unless any others are riding up from the RC area and wanna ride in with.

Might be amending my sign up to be an RV if there is space.  Looked at and went in on a 5th wheel with the folks this afternoon.

Thanks for that update.  Original post updated.

I asked Elisa.  I even asked "are you sure?"  So, she plans on doing the normal thing for Friday night.
That still leaves Saturday night.  I assume that will be probably the normal thing also.  I'll post or NDave can about the other goodies people should bring.
I'll post the week before the rally.  Usually its chips, cookies, some of the fixings for the chili and of course Bonnie always brings numerous things, including I think a Scotcheroos.  Anyway there always good.

Not to worry.  I've said it before, this group is like herding cats!  No one really plans anything until the night before or the very morning.  It usually gets determined based on how many riders and such.  Because we don't know you yet, someone will talk to you about what you want to do; single track, two track, asphalt, experience and of course what type of bike/s you have to ride.  Also if you want to take off by yourself or with another buddy, we will help you do that with trails and information.  Some groups come back for lunch, but most do not.

The next question is usually when do things start happening?  There's only a few that ever leave camp before 9 am.  Everyone is usually up around 0700 and eat breakfast at the Fish and Fry.   This is when we really make the plans for the day.  I would say be around and nearly ready by 0915 hours and you will be fine.  Somewhere between 0930 and 1000 hours the different groups are all leaving.  Basically, once you figure out where and who you want to go with, just let them know and also keep an eye on that group.  Bikes and people will start to gather around the leaders bike before they leave.  It always funny to watch, when the leader's bike starts up, people start moving!

Especially the first day, everyone will have a pit or group meeting to cover the rules.  The rules are usually just so the group does not get separated.
Great Buffalo does a great job of explaining the rules.  He might chime in here.

If you or anyone have more questions just ask.

New to the sport, but really excited about this dual-sport rally. I would like to do single-track and high-speed interstate. On the same day, on the same bike.

What is the best motor oil for this?

:o high quality olive oil---internet told me so.

I heard massage oil is good too.

Bogus, be in your group, sounds like fun  :o

Well said Dave. That's it in a nutshell.  Yes we will have a morning meeting covering the rules of the trail/road. We have had problems in the past with people getting stranded on the trail. This has been at times been the fault of the rider, and others. We want to bring a end to this. Making sure everyone comes back with the group instead of a rescue party being sent to find them, is the goal.

baby oil, but it has to be fresh squeezed.....never use the synthetic stuff.

Perfect. Thank you.  I think the bike is good to go, I'll aim to show up in time for an egg and coffee but I have no real idea how vile this thing is on the pavement.  Sucked to miss today, I'm really looking forward to tomorrow.  Anyone riding up from Rapid on 44 in the morning?
