Title: 2019 SPRING RALLY
Post by: Lonesome Dave on November 26, 2018, 08:04:57 PM
Hey everyone!  I know it's early to be thinking about the 2019 Spring Rally, but I was approached today by Chip Monahan, administrator for the Omaha Adventure Riders (OAR) group that they were interested in attending our Spring Rally and wanted to get the dates.  OAR has come out to the hills in the past for trail riding and now has a couple of our members Sandhill Rider and myself as members.  This past August, they came out for 3 days of riding and Sandhill Rider was going to come with them, but had to bail for other commitments.  So I went riding with them and had a blast.

I told Chip today that the Spring Rally would probably be June 13th or 20th at Fish N Fry.  The last couple of years we've been kind of lazy getting things planned for the rally, especially the fall rally.  So I'm proposing we "git-r-done."  And in-fact I propose we make a date and set it up for the fall rally instead of trying to find what's available later.  But for now, lets get the Spring Rally date set.

Please look at your spring schedules and give some input.  I told Chip it would take a week or so for us to decide on the date.  I for one don't care.  I'd say that OAR would probably bring about 6 to 12 riders and a whole lot of fun.  Check them out on Facebook, they have lots of stuff going on all the time.

HANK, can you move this post to the Rally section.

13th or 20th works for us. Better call fish and fry and see if one is more open than the other if your adding that many.

my schedule changes all the time so it doesn't matter to me. I'll try to show up and ride with the single track crew whenever it is.. oh, ya, and for beer too!! ;D

Either will likely work for me, but I like the 13th better if you make me choose.  I joined the OAR group too.

Is this what Dave means by herding cats?

Once again I'm going to say I'm IN, and this time I'm gonna make it, damnit.    I might just go buy a new two stroke to force the issue.

I would also prefer the 13th.

I'm a member of the OAR group on the Facebook as well.

It looks like the 13th of June.  I'm waiting for Michelle from Fish n Fry to call me back to make sure everything is good on that weekend.
I'll let ya know.

Okay then.  I talked to Michelle at Fish N Fry this past weekend.  They are good with either date.  It looks like several don't care which date and 4 or 5 others would rather have the June 13th.

So without further ado the 2019 Spring / Summer Rally is set for June 13, 14,15, & 16th, 2019 at Fish n Fry.

Will someone (Stacy / Hank) please make up a fancy sign-up post on a new thread; 2019 Spring / Summer Rally.

Probably a dumb question:

Do I need to buy a permit for trails during the dual sport ride in June?  I have a Nebraska licensed motorcycle, but I'm thinking I probably also need one of those trail permits?

Bike Mooching!!!

So I've befriended this quasi midget friend.  He's maybe 5'6 and a semi-newb.  Had a cruiser 5yrs ago and then no bike as he got stationed overseas.

He'd like to hang out at DDSR; no $$ as he just got stationed at Ellsworth and picked up a new truck and house in the last few months.  We did some gravel and fat 2-track yesterday and he did good until we stopped to talk - flopped my mighty DRZ once on the right side and once on the left cause he couldn't make it far enough to the ground.

Anybody got a flogged XT225 or similar that he could beat during the rally???

Thanks

I dunno about "flogged", but I could bring Heidi's 230L, would probably be perfect. Same seat height as an XT. She doesn't ride much anymore but she may want to take it for a gravel tour one afternoon. Other than that it would be his to ride. She didn't ride it once last year, I rode some fence lines with it up in the hill country. It is getting lonely and could use a few miles under it.

FYI; Today, 5-13 is officially one month from the start of the Spring Rally!   :o  When we started this thread, it seemed like a long time until June.  Now it's just around the corner!

For you out of town people, BH Forest Service postponed the opening of the seasonal trails.  On May 15th they are suppose to be opened, but they have decided it's too wet right now.  I'm sure they'll be opened within a week or so after.  Unless it snows again.

Snow?? That would suck. Let hope for a month of mild weather and fair winds to dry things out. Neil Young led a chant at Woodstock in 1969. Lets replicate that chant now. NO MORE RAIN! NO MORE RAIN! MO MORE RAIN!!!

Unless we get a lot of sunshine the 5 days prior, the trails will not be much fun.  shrug.
The second time I have to pick up my bike, I pretty much done in.

Ah, we are dual sport!
Even if the trails are closed, with a little map study, you can easily ride 2-300 mile loops of gravel roads and see a lot of SD/WY you would not normally see...as well as a day of canyon carving.  and there will be little or no dust!

If you stop in where they sell hunting licenses, or the SDFG office,  they offer a free publication  called/titled SD Hunting Atlas (the year is not relevant) which shows all the gravel roads as well as open section lines.  It is essentially a miniature copy of the SD DELORME that easily fits on the tank bag.
Use a highlighter and chart a course.

One of my favorite 200 mile rides is to go East from Sturgis on Alkali road all the way to Wall (with some jags and jogs, [see comment on map study]) for a buffalo burger (you really need an excuse to go to Wall (cough).  You will usually see some Eagles, antelope, white and mule deer, and some ruts!
After Wall:
Exit Wall back to Wasta (see the private military arms collection) and ride along the Cheyenne River back towards Rapid, or
go South from Wall into the Badlands via Sage Creel Rd.  All of which is Big Bike friendly.  MOre map study will take you to Orient or other places....

NOTE: When using the GPS/Hunting Guide, or Delorme, all 'gravel' roads, = non-paved surfaces,  may NOT be graveled at all, or only lightly graveled and are nearly impassible when slightly wet or drying after long periods of rain,  due to the gumbo content.
If you enter one of those sketchy trails/roads and you are leaving a full tire print, 3" deep, it is likely to get worse.
an example of that:
The road going East from Midland to Cappo, then further East to the VanMeter Rd is a case in point. That stretch from Cappo to VanMeter Rd has approximately 5+ miles of prairie gumbo that is impassible on the motorbike when wet.
(After hitting the VanMeter Road you will go N to the Bad River Road for a view (usually) of Ted Turners Buffalo herd.

You can avoid the mess by going N from Cappo to the Bad River Rd, East to VanMeter intersection to see the buffalo and then further E to Ft. Pierre along the Bad River.
That will be a 400 mile ride from Sturgis, 450 mile ride from the campground.

Other similar rides are available by riding S from Rochford all the way to Elk Mt lookout tower and the further S to Hot Springs, etc. on Gravel roads, and perhaps, you won't drop a bike.

If it is muddy, that is what my posse will be doing.

(c.  605.870.0012) if any of that is of interest to you.
HTH.

Vanocker Canyon road was free of snow on Friday afternoon.
There were many 'shallow' stream crossings and sandy spots as the snow melt carries sand onto the road.

These conditions were mostly N of Veterans Peak.
Title: Re: 2019 SPRING RALLY
Post by: Cjones on May 25, 2019, 10:11:38 AM
It was coming down almost as fast as it was melting and we still got 8"+ accumulation at one point, not sure how much actually fell but it was quite a damn lot more than that. We got more trees down, not as bad as 2013 but I'm going to be set for firewood for the foreseeable future.  I heard RC dodged it for the most part but I was without power and snowed in for a couple days and I'm only a few minutes west of RC.

I think we are done with snow but I'm a ways south of guaranteeing that. If winter is any indication of spring it could be a soggy year deep in the sticks.  Dont look at me, I'm working to increase global warming by riding a smoker, it's you 4 stroke guys that are responsible for these late spring flash storms and cold soupy rains with your boring, efficient, low emissions  bikes haha.

SCOUTING - A Shy 2 Weeks before Rally

Water and Snow - Yep, it's legit.  Dave and I struck out at 11:00 on a west-ward loop to fiquire out how Rally can happen.

I read the official bulletin from the forest service - all trails (those are labeled with 4 digits) and seasonal areas  (trails and roads bordered by grey) have been closed due to the wet weather

First stop was Victoria lake area.  It's fairly wet but there are several fun/entertaining roads that run thru there.  We may not be able to go on all the trails we have explored in the past but there's still some fun to be had in this zone

Next we headed towards Hill City and Deerfield.  I thought it was suprizingly dry.  We talked to a group of UTV's that had been south of Ditch Creek - their report was positive and we are fairly certain that the SE will be quite passible.  Dust was kicking up on the roads as we headed further west.  Dave spent some time smoozing-up a local land-owner for some land access.  After some heavy but kissing, he got the go-ahead.  We went further west and that region is very passible.

Eventually, we turned around and snaked back thru Black Fox and headed east to Rochford and Sugar Shack

Thats where things got interesting.  Just after Rochford, it got WET.  It's wet all the way to Nemo.  That whole area is more than saturated ....  and .... we still got a couple of days with a lot of rain.

So, it's my opinion that the FS will not open the trails and seasonal areas before Rally

BUT

I do think we still have some decent riding.  It's just that we will have to travel to get to the riding.

For those of us Jones'in for some single track, I'm afraid it may not happen in the next 2-3 weeks.  My poor, sexy Beta, will likely be grounded for the Rally.

Keep this in mind as you consider what bike-weapon-of-choice and gear you are hoping to bring.

Post by: Lonesome Dave on May 26, 2019, 11:56:48 PM
Wacked and I talked about what we should say or how to describe the trail conditions.  I think he nailed it above.

I can say I was much more optimistic about the conditions after our ride today.  But, as soon as we started east away from Rochford, water everywhere.  Even water running across or along side the road in places.

It's too bad we could not predict the weather, or at least moved our camping location from the Northern end of the hills to a more central location.  But, were here to ride anyway.  I'm basically always happy wherever I'm riding in the hills.
One more thing.......it's really green out there.

Mark I think the Enfield is a good machine for her. I was concerned about reliability on it at first but if you watch this https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEIs9nkveW9WmYtsOcJBwTg you will find that with minimal sorting it can be pretty dang reliable. Reliable enough that this woman takes her into some of the most remote and inhospitable places solo.

Post by: greatbuffalo on May 29, 2019, 09:36:46 AM
Okay. After a little thought and considering the current conditions I have decided to lead a mostly asphalt route on Friday. I also have a issue with my left arm that has me concerned about doing some technical offroad riding.

Some of you joined me last year where the aim was to link as many twisties as possible in ones days ride. I think we did about 180 miles last year but I did not really keep track. A bit of gravel may be had as well if we are all on adv bikes. Last year we had a sport bike with us so no gravel was had.

The loop will start on Nemo road, to Norris Peak Road to Hwy 44 to Sheridan Lake road to 385 to Hill city and the Old Hill City Road to Keystone. From Keystone take 40 to South Playhouse Road and do a backdoor tour of Custer State park. From There things are up for conversation over lunch in Keystone. As always the suggestions on alternative routes and roads can be discussed. I have found roads I have never been on this way.

Anyway.... if anyone would like to join me on this ride let me know. I will however like to keep this group fairly small. 8 riders or so so we do not get to spread out. This will be a spirited ride so if you are looking to do this loop in slow-mo, I am not the guy you want to ride with. We will however stop for photos and from time to time.

If there is more interest than the 8 or so riders, maybe we can do two groups and all meet for lunch in Keystone.

I am also thinking about maybe leading another ride on Saturday that will be much more gravel but nothing technical.

Sounds much like the loop I did on my CBR last year...minus the run into Rapid to pick up Sheridan Lake Rd.  I ended up with about 220ish? miles including the Needles Hwy.  Twisty Loop.  No mud either.  Different kind of fun in the Hills.

Did some more scouting on Sat and came up with a pretty sweet route.  Dave had some last minute plans so took off with Jeff on his 250F and PegLeg on his hopped-up 250X towards Custer

We jumped into the trees just East of Jewel cave and made our way to the Southern most road/trail system in the Black Hills.  I think I'll name this loop the B.A.S. - Big Ass Southern Loop.  Really, its not much of a loop - you just dead-head south on some pretty sweet "very rustic roads".  This is some sexy country.  Gets into the Jasper Burn just a little bit.  Bumps into some Elk country.  Has rocks, mud, sand, sage, pines, cactus, and big vistas.  End destination is Pilger Mountain area

All of it is suitable for up to mid-size bikes with knobbies.  There's some sections I wouldn't bring a big bike on.  Has some sand and perhaps mud so I wouldn't do 50/50 tires.  Length from Custer was about 135miles ...... gas was an issue for Jeff.

I'd be open to taking a group of 7-8 down there Friday or Sun.

Sounds like a fun "Loop" to me. 135 miles between gas stops?  Would we start at fish and fry and end up in Custer 135 miles later?  Or would we dead head to Custer, then go another 135 miles?

It was a fun loop.  Weather was perfect.

Scouted a little this afternoon as Dave and I were unsure exactly what the Newton and Nugget areas are.  These remain shut down along with some specific numbered trails by the BHNFS.  This area ends up being one DDSR's favorite haunts - Miners Hotel and road 249.

The good news is that the road from 3 Forks to Slate Creek is open and I assume it's good to go all the way over to Mystic

Thursday Mid Day I am going to run some mixed single/double track check on trail conditions and see what things are like out there. Friday I can lead a group of folks that want to do the single track. Saturday I am going to do some double track trail/forest road exploring. I have to do a shake down on the Beta on Saturday to see how the Lectron is running and how it handles the Higher elevations. If anyone wants to join in on any of these days LMK. The Friday single track day I would like no more then six riders as it gets tough to keep everyone in the group together, I guess really I can say that for any of the days, at least 2 no more then 6.

Well I was going to be super ready to go but on the final shake down ride today the xt decided it doesn't want to go so it locked its oil pump up. Just wondering if anyone does rides that are big clumsy adv bike friendly. I could maybe still cruise down on the versys. Or maybe I'll just see you in the fall.

On subject of GreatBuffalo - DAN - Look him up when you get to the Rally.

He's been all over the hills on all types of tracks.  He's a great resource who can guide you to what/where/and who to ride with.

I'm out too.  Just been driving too damn much lately and can't get motivated to rack up another 800.
Its been too long, but I'll have to try again in the fall.
Have a blast, everyone!

Decided to take the adv bike. It's a little heavy for me to unload myself. Anyone going to be around tonight if I need a hand unloading it?

Big Montana guy on the old red KLR here.  Can't thank you guys enough for letting me tag along.  Amazing riding that just kept getting better!  The people were as nice as the riding too!  My first time group riding or real trail riding but it will not be my last.

MTKLR -

Was a blast to have you on the rides.   We introduced you to some pretty crazy stuff for a 1st ride flat-lander and you just took it with a grain of salt - Rock On!

Wow!  What an experience.  Thank you to all the DDSR's that put this ride on.  Wacked, thanks for taking me out on Friday, after the 1st water crossing 10 minutes in I knew I was going to push some limits.  :)  Lonesome Dave thanks for the Jacket that I now know I practically stole from you after looking it up online...NDave, thanks for the advice and conversation, along with helping me load my bike.  All the others that helped with food and rides that I didn't get to meet, thanks.

I rode places and did things Friday and Saturday that I would have never done riding alone, it was a great experience.

Great time and great people.  Thanks to folks for food.  To those who road in front and allowed others to follow them you made the weekend amazing even if your wife thinks you are boring.

More challenging Sunday night and Monday morning! Went to Camp 5 (anyway we could see it from the trail we were on😉) Found some other new loops just right for the G-P group!! I'll mail your rain cover forgot in my bag.

You bet Ken, you were a lot of fun to be around.  Next time we'll get to some real interesting stuff, and you can do it all on a KLR!!
A lot of it is closed right now.  Hey I also sent you a pm.

Have a few pics. Old cabin and flag mountain with Mark's group on Saturday and  twisties with Dan on friday. I really want to thank everyone for one of the best weekends I've had in a long time. Especially everyone who put up with me on that slow versys ;). I was so nervous to show up with an adv bike but I had an absolute blast. Hope to see you all in the fall. Definitely on a legit dual sport this time!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190620/6b33bb04d1df321cc51cfe8684471303.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190620/f8a7cd78cc23f69974b98cad7ea2b346.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190620/f33e591540c2c47bd68f046b995ccc9e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190620/a35c9a32afb8ddd6b21f519c1ebe8c46.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190620/0ea8be427d37d09a69657eacb5a89d51.jpg)
