Title: weeknight riding league
Post by: Fletch on July 05, 2019, 09:59:32 AM
from around 2000 to 2012 or so a group of us would ride Thursday nights after work from Piedmont. due to unfortunate events the group fell apart. It was always a great time so thinking of trying to get on started again if there is interest?
We met at the Piedmont lot at 4:30 back in the day but where and when can be worked out if there is interest. In the past we had 10 or so guys with about half showing up on most nights. typically had a beer or two after we got done, but that's optional  ;).
Let me know if you are interested, what days/places would work, etc....

Only 487 miles to Piedmont.  I'd be in for a Thursday night ride or two.    ::)

Was a Fun but Funky night last night .....

Tried to ride some stuff around Victoria last night with Mike and Arlen ....  It's still WET and there has been some spotty wind/tree issues.

All of us had some slight issues:
-    Arlen couldn't stay upright 100% of the time
-    Brad had to haul out the warrior princess in a truck because her plumbing sprung a leak
-    Mike tuckered himself out trying to navigate the "Pixy Stix Forest"

Yea, it was a great time

You could have been there

Another good night of riding!  Mike and his buddy flogged me so I was sweating like a pig .....   both Mike and the Princess are waiting for me to "UP" my game.

Trails are in pretty good shape.

Who's in for next week?

It was a gorgeous night of riding.

Fletch and I were both unfamiliar with the Schroeder region so decided to explore the single tracks in this area.  2/3 of them were fun and open.  1/3 were still fun but required beating the bikes through dead-fall.  There were a couple of trails where we got denied and had to turn around.

I went down twice and smashed my nuts each time!....   it was still fun ;)

I feel kinda sorry for the people that missed last weeks ride .....

Because of some upcoming weekend plans, I couldn't fully prep for a single track flogging with the princess SO ...  Mike and I jumped on the bigger bikes after work for a quick loop, 2-tracking it around Pine Grove/Hippy Hole area.  Great trail conditions.  Made it back by 8:00

Perfect night for riding .......

Another great night! a little blood sweat and tears (OK, maybe no tears) and we made it out of the woods just at dark. I'm a little sore this morning from a minor fall, Brad saw the whole thing I'm sure it was entertaining.. who's in for next week?
Title: Re: weeknight riding league
Post by: Wacked on August 30, 2019, 08:15:27 AM

Yea - I lied a little bit on the last post.

Said that we'd come out of the woods with big-ass-grins on our faces.........    for a couple of us, those grins left our faces and are probably somewhere in our gut.

First part of the night was stellar.   Then, I got insistent that we do a trail that had kicked Jeff's and my butt earlier this spring.  This time I brought the little bike and wanted to teach that trail a lesson.  This trail can be a rocky son-of-a-gun and has a big sweeping curve that made us turn around last time.  This same spot proved to be a challenge again.  After some offs/wounds/recoveries, we found ourselves close to twight with no option but to keep going and get out of there ASAP - no breaks; no stopping to lick our wounds - nothing like navigating a single track with about 25% light and quickly fading

We made it - barely.  Not sure if we kicked the trail's butt or if it kicked ours.

I'm dense in the head - kinda like it - and will probably do it again next week.

Due to the weather this week, Fletch and I road today (Sat) from mid-afternoon and into the evening.  The weather was PERFECT!  Trails were in good shape.

Explored some new 2-track around slate creek dam that was fun - it was rougher with a lot of whoopties - come on guys, that's a trail term isn't it?   Then cut across to do single-track 6936 and rode that in it's entirety.

After we popped out of the track it was time to get home before the sun went down.  We rode as fast as I could (Mike casually cruised on my tail) up Mystic, across Slate Creek, and back to the trucks

The highlight was ripping around a corner just east of Slate Creek dam and spooking a Big Nasty Ass Mountain Lion who didn't want anything to do with dirt bikes.  Mike and I watched him head up the hill for 5-6 seconds.

It was a great afternoon of riding and the Mt. Lion was defiantly the highlight!! Although that never ending hill climb was pretty good too!

also staying on your tail was far from a casual effort....lol

OK - Tonight was the start of the Weeknight Riding league for 2020!

Gorgeous evening to chew some dust.  Mike and I started out on some easy single track SW of Sugar Shack.  Trails in great condition.  Must admit, I was rustier than usual.  The downed tree 300 yards from the start of the trail kicked my old, tired butt.  Then it get better after that .....

Until I hit a tree stump in a muddy gully crossing 2 hours later.

Ooooops!!!

I'd better get it fixed so I can can go do it again next week

Perfect night or Single Tracking.

Ron lead us up through Schroeder and up into Johnson Siding.  Temp was just right.  Made it back with zero "offs" and nothing to fix for next time - that's new!

Last night was EPIC!!!

For various reasons, I found myself without the usual riding partners last night.  Went out with Jaxon, a young guy with a 250 2-smoke from Colorado that said single track was his "jam".  Completed 6713 in Victoria Lake as I had not finished it during the rally.

It was EPIC because I was the one who got to do the flogging!!!   Yea, It's a new sensation of power.  Usually Mike and Ron flog me down the trails but tonight was my turn.  Each of us had a couple of Offs.

It was fun.  It was hot.  2.5 hours was enough

Jaxon ended the night puking his guts out.

I look forward to next week

Very fun night up through Schroeder and Bogus Jim region.  Just TooTall and myself.

There was even a little barbed wire event that instantaneously reminded me of Fletches "Fat-Tire-Bicycle-Guys" video.   It didn't involve me (for once); It wasn't that bad, but I did have flashback.

Awesome way to wrap up the season!!!

Got in 4 hours of single track today - 1st run in maybe 2 months - and it was awesome out there.  Weather was perfect.  Did a big loop around Victoria Lake.

Ron couldn't make today.  Mike, myself, and a new guy named Josh made the run.  Josh has mad mountain-bike skills that he seamlessly transferred his new single track'in Beta.

Looking forward to next spring

Here's what I HATE about single track riding .....

Waking up at 11:00 at night with "CRAMPS FROM HELL" !!!   I usually get one in my thigh that literally makes me sick to my stomach for 5 minutes

Other than that, it's all good, quite fun, and worth it :evil.

Well I've found drinking tonic water helps with leg cramps. The more quinine the better it seems to work.

Work completely HOSED me over from riding with the guys Thurs night due to a last minute order at work......

So, I went out Sunday and did some solo single track in on the NE corner of 44 and 385 and then just west of 385.  The fall colors were spectacular and the trails were in prime shape.  Only saw two other bikes on the trail.

Now's the time to get out and explore!

Just got my bike back together and went out solo on Saturday.

I found a nice flowy single track through the trees over in the Schroeder trails off 6607. Still figuring it all out but so happy to have it right there, next door. The conditions were like you say, excellent!

Only saw two other sets of MC tracks out there.

Five things you missed if you weren't Single-Tracking last night:
- Perfect weather
- Breaking up a herd of 15 or so Elk (yep, this was in the Victoria Lake zone)
- Getting absolutely blinded by the sun so you couldn't see Jack when going up certain inclines
- Riding 25% faster than usual on a tight knarly trail cause you are being chased by a dog in the absolute middle of nowhere
- Great trail conditions

Yep, you should have been there......

Went out on Sunday with Fletch, TooTall, and Al for another great day of Single-tracking

Introduced Al and his beastly YZ450F to some trails.   The temp was perfect again; trails were a little dusty.  Fletch led us on an awesome route back into an area that I hadn't been on for a couple of years.

Hope to do it again soon
