Title: Discussion on Spring Rally June 18- 21, 2020
Post by: greatbuffalo on September 24, 2019, 10:21:32 AM
Spring rally was the discussion of many people on Sunday. The general consensus to try to find a different place for next spring. With the Chambers of Commerce doing a better job at filling the calendars before Memorial Day and after Labor Day its become harder and harder to find a place to book late as has been our norm in the past. We are finding that the earlier we start the better our chances to find a place. So, I was handed the task to look into a couple of places.

Today I visited with Julie at Trails Head Lodge on Hwy 85 on the way from Lead to Wyoming. Here is the scoop that has a few concessions. These are the facts with no other commentary. We also discussed a 10% discount on all prices. You cane visit their website at : http://www.trailsheadlodge.com/

As of now they are wide open. One issue may be that they set of National Forest land and was told that NO open fires are permitted except for gas. There are gas pumps on site.

These are the facts with no other commentary

Cabins, 7 of them. Each has seating area and bathroom. No kitchenette as cabins are not wired well enough to support appliances. There are gas heaters in them. Bedding and towels are provided.

- 2 Large cabins, sleep 8 total. One private bedroom with a queen and loft with 3 queens. Regular price is $225 per night for 4 people and $25 each person after that.

- 5 small cabins, sleep 6. One private bedroom with a queens and a loft with 2 queens. Regular price in $150 per night for 2 people and $25 each person after that.

Studio Apt. is above the main business building. Has 3 Queen beds and does have a kitchen

Tents can set up in a flat area adjacent to the cabins but must limit vehicles in that area as its also the leach field for the cabins. I am assured that its very dry. There is a single bathroom with shower that is accessible and close to this area.
Tents could also use the open field across the Hwy and vehicles are permitted there.
Cost of camping is $20 per night.

RVs
The only space they have for RVs is an open gravel lot behind the storage building and they have 6, 20 amp circuits. This means that if its warm and you want to run AC, you'll have to have a generator. There is plenty of space for the RVs that we would have I think, My estimate was 8, but please inform me if I'm way off. No other hook ups except for the 6 minimal power taps.
Price is $20 per night without power, $30 with power.

There is a restaurant on site that serves 3 meals a day and a bar. The restaurant is quite large with plenty of space for our morning meetings.

Let the discussion begin.

I will be visiting Wild Bills shortly and will post my findings on that visit this evening.

If wild Bills is decent it would provide great access to trails, it is just down the road from Fish-n-fry on thet road to Galena.

Okay, Talked to Wild Bills today. They are mostly wide open.

Cabins, 7 of them
Camper/sleeper cabins. sleeps 4 to 6 depending on how cozy you are. These are $70 a night for 2 people and $8  for extra people. Need to bring bedding. No bathrooms
they have two full amenity cabins but those are already booked.

RVs 25 sites with full hookup, 30 or 50 amp, $34 and $38 respective of power needs.

Tenting is $23 - $25  a night for 2, $5 each additional

Restaurant is on site but does not do breakfast. I asked if breakfast could be arranged and he stated they did that another time for an ATV group where they said 20 people would show up but only 5 or less did. He said if we could guarantee 15 to 20 each morning they would consider it.

There ya go...... discuss.

Thanks, Danny Boy!

One question, after visiting both places and seeing what they offer for our group, what is your gut feeling about which one.

Wild Bill sounds good. I think we should book it.
We could always ride down to fish an fry for breakfast- ha ha.

Wouldn't necessarily need a restaurant for breakfast. A decent sized portable griddle, some scrambled eggs and a toaster and breakfast is served. That would keep it simple and easy, just my .02. Out of those two choices, I like Wild Bill's as long as the tent sites are on high ground.

Late to the discussion but why not just stay at FnF especially if moving to a campground 1/2 mile down the road? I don't really care, just curious. The FnF has always been good to us.

That all sounds good to me. I unfortunately couldn't make the fall rally work this year due to harvest stuff but those spring dates look perfect. Ill put it in my calendar. Picked up a nice TW200 with ultra knobbies on it i want to try out in the hills next spring!

June 18 - 21 should be a good date.    I was afraid it was the same weekend as the Yamaha FJR Rally in Red Lodge, but that is the following weekend.  I'll have to start saving my money and vacation for back to back weekends.   Looking forward to 2020 to make up for the riding debacle 2019 ended up being.

Been hearing some campgrounds and events in other states closing up for slowing craziness...but shouldn't this be about done by then...? Virus dislikes warm temps....so come on global warming to save us.
Ok serious here...I wondered all my travel plans this year.

I propose we make a final determination on or around Tax Day - April 15th

That would be two months out from rally.

There are a lot of different views of this crap; watching other countries and even WA state, I personally don't believe this is a 2-3 week issue.  Our state is projecting "Peak" end of May/early June-ish.

So far I've had 2 late spring/early summer trips canceled.

Being couped up is for the birds!

Wracked is on it   Way to early to tell.   April 15 is where first we need to worry about it.  May 15 is when I plan to decide.    The battery's r in the bikes and I am social distancing at 20 to 60 mph

I agree. We can start the conversation middle of April and people can decide on the their own as to what they want to do, cancel or continue to plan. Then through on going thought and discussion we can make a decision to cancel middle of May.
My 2 cents.

Baha -

Kinda scared to check it out because every other plan I've had this Spring has gone to crap!

BUT

I'll give Wild Bills a call tomorrow and see what their Open/Closed status will be in mid-June.  If they are open, I don't see why not.  If they are closed, there will likely be some hard discussion about the early Rally.

I booked a cabin today and plan to be there.  F the Covid19!  It isn't going to be easy because I have a FJR rally in Red Lodge the following weekend but I deserve it after the 2019 riding disaster.

Wild Bill's plans to be open as of Memorial Day....

That means of all of you brave enough to attend, DDSR June 6/18-21 should be able to happen.

Being a little more than a month out, it's time to get your camping reservations

As a reminder, Wild Bill's # is 605/578-2800

It's time to turn off those Walter Mitty riding videos, get off the couch, get out of the house, and RIDE!!!

We are 3 weeks away from Spring Rally!!!  Over this Memorial Day weekend, several of us were out in the Hills playing and scouting;  the trails were in great shape.

Some general thoughts on this upcoming Rally -

1) If you are planning on coming, get your reservation into Wild Bills - see previous posts for their #

2) Avenza.  You really should download this app. to your phone.  After the app download, you should download the Mystic MVUM, Hell Canyon MVUM, and Northern Hills MVUM.  Its free.  It will help the locals tell you where the good trails are; it might help you get out of the woods and save you from a free night of camping under a pine tree.

3) The Covid Thing - we've been at this now for 3 months and each of us has formed an opinion on how we should or should not interface with others.  I work with the public daily; I've been to several states around me and know that people are at each end of the spectrum.  I've categorized people into 3 groups -

a) People on the Left who are damn serious about bumping into or spreading ANY germs.  We will not see them at the Rally but certainly welcome them back in 2021

b) People in the Center who do some reasonable but basic stuff to keep Covid Cooties away from them and hopefully away from others

c) People hard Right on the spectrum who are convinced this is all pure unadulterated BS.

If your thought processes are hard Right, please respect distances of those who are a little more concerned about this nasty-Ass bug.  I really don't know what the right approach is; but then again it's not likely we are going to change each others minds on how legit this virus is or the best way to limit spread.

Because of the Corona cross-contamination stuff, we've decided NOT to have a group Chili feed/Pulled-Pork on Friday and Saturday night.  Sorry.  I will miss it for sure.

4) Single-Track.  There's a contingent who want to beat their bodies and bikes so they can come back to camp with a sense of accomplishment.  We have somebody who wants to show them the trails where this can happen.

5) Double-Track.  Couple of groups will be going out 2-Tracking.  One in particular wants to explore the Rochford/Pactola Trails.

6) Gravel and Fun 2-Track.  There will be a Big Bike contingent out there exploring the Hills

7) If you would, sign in and let us know that you are coming

Bring whatever Dual Sport kind of bike you want.  There will likely be a group you can connect with and have a great ride over Fathers Day Weekend

BELOW IS A MESSAGE WE SENT OUT TO ALL OF THEM. WE DO NOT WANT TO IMPOSE AND WILL TRY TO BE AS SELF-SUFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE.

THE LAST TWO YEARS HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC AND WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO BE RESPECTFUL OF "YOUR" EVENT.

THANKS!

June South Dakota Ride Update #1:

*Attendance: It looks like we will have up to 20 riders attending the Black Hills ride. We don't want to be a burden to the Dakota Dual Sport Riders group so we need to be as self sufficient as possible. They have been gracious enough to invite us to join them and we want to be invited back in the future. If we show up expecting them to guide our group of 20 riders, we may not be welcome again.

*Group Size: To have an enjoyable ride the MAXIMUM group size is 5-6 riders. For us to be self sufficient we need to have at least 4 ride leaders that can read maps and GPS. Right now, we are planning on ride leaders of.....Rob Wemhoff, Burt Peterson, Terry Thompson, and another volunteer. We will supply some tracks to ride, and you can make your own up if so desired. If your interested in being a ride leader please let Chip or Rob know.

*Ride Leaders: Our ride leaders are not from the hills, there will be dead ends, wrong turns, we are totally lost moments, this is all part of the fun, just be prepared for there to be some mayhem.

*Weather: Attached are some photos and video of what the weather can be like in the hills. Be prepared for cold temperatures, rain, mud, rocks.

*Motorcycles: We all break down, and I don't even want to say this in case I jinx myself....but you're bike needs to be ready for this ride. You need good tires, you need to have what you need to fix a tire, you need the correct riding gear, you need to carry tools to fix your bike if needed on the trail, you need water, you need to know the range of your bike. All of these things can and will go wrong, we will all band together to help another rider, but don't be "that guy" that is unprepared.

*Food: Due to Covid-19 there will not be group dinners like in the past. Food is on you.

*It's Your Vacation: You don't have to do the group rides, your more than welcome to, but ride where you want, when you want, with who you want.

Reminder to Noobs and Out-of-Staters

The National Forested requires Trail Permits on most of the stuff you want to ride.  Get one sent to you now.

They do have bike patrols random stops in out of the way places.  The fines do hurt if you are not stickered.

Random Thoughts on Riding the Hills ......

A) Weather here is bi-Polar.  More often then not, on any given day, you will be riding through a range of temperatures.  The "variety" in weather also includes rain.  Prepare for the same; cotton is not your friend - think layers.  Riders will often adjust plans based on where a storm or cloud cell is tracking

B) Although it's not 100% true, a lot of riders think in terms of Zones or Areas when riding the Hills.  Natural barriers, roads, maybe lack of trails in some spots make it so that the Black Hills are not one Contiguous riding area.  What that means is that local riders often slab-it to a certain area or sometimes trailer a dirt bike to an area they want to ride.  It's pretty hard to go a full day without a bit of road to connect up into another sweet zone.

C) Cell service.  I would guess 1/2 - 2/3 of the trails do not have cell coverage.  Don't bank on reaching out to Mama and have her bring you the spare tube you left in the truck box

.....  I do have more random thoughts, but my kid just called me about a key she forgot .....   more to come

If you have a big bike, I am planning a gravel route with a bit of mild technical road. Not sure what day. A group of 5 or 6 would be good.

Also planning a day of medium bike on two track and gravel. A bit technical on a mid sized bike, not so technical on a small DS bike.

My big bike rides on gravel will be scenic. Not a lot of thought goes into them, just a general direction and see where it leads.

Lonesome and I scouted some 2-track stuff today ...

Found a sweet route/trail that neither of us had been on before (I wouldn't go up their alone w/Dave again  :-\ ....... you'll have to ask him why)   Also found a couple of segments that have been closed by the N.F..  Luckily, I don't think there is as many closures this year as last year.

Should be some good riding in 2.5 weeks!

That's not fair.  Brad leads us to the top of a steep mountain hoping for a great view, nothing but more trees.  After I fall over and pickup the DR pig, I'm out of breath, I look at the map, "Rimmer Ridge!"  I was the one that was worried.   8)

Edit:  Elisa doesn't like this either.  Brad drags me along on another "Man Date" and we end up at Brokeback Mountain!  Those are her words.

That's just creepy Dave..... :-X

I will be riding single track both friday and saturday. Not sure if others are leading single track groups as well or not? If others want to take a group we can figure out who wants to ride what. If not my plan is to meet at the sugar shack and ride the easier stuff friday, then kick it up a notch saturday. Or, whatever people want to do?

p.s. I'm not sadistic(as some would have you believe), and there will be plenty of points both days where people can bail out when they've had enough both days. so, it's not like you are committed to the entire day. and, it'll be loads of fun!  ;) ;D

Yes, the restaurant is still open for lunch and supper as advertised on the web-site.  The Dude thought his bar food - burgers and handmade pizzas - were pretty good stuff.  I don't know, never eaten there.

Pancakes are only available during the "Sturgis Rally".  I asked about the restaurant down at the Steel Wheel but apparently that is closed  up for good.

Prime Rib in Deadwood - no idea.

Sat down last night and mapped out 2 routes I'm thinking about -

Friday - Two Track oriented route.  Should be good for bikes 650 on down.  The track will lead south towards Mystic and then West towards Flag Mtn and beyond.  8-10 riders should be the limit

Saturday - I wanna try something new.  This is a "1.5" oriented track.  Yep, just made it up.  It will start south outta Sugar Shack towards Hill City then East into Victoria Lake.  Suitable for bikes 450 on down.  It will weave thru some easier single tracks, bitchier 2-tracks, and your run of the mill 2 tracks.   Won't be hard-core single tracking all day but there will be places that your bike could go down or gets stuck between tress  ;D.   7-8 riders should be the limit

I've been through most of this country at one time or the other but wont have time to pre-run all of it.

Weather forecast for Rally is Awesome!

Forecasts aim for temps to be in the low 70's with some potential for rain - would be good to kick down the dust (and add some trail entertainment  :evil )  Did some scouting today.

Look forward to having you come to the hills!

Here's a file that I copied from Mike's notes.  He plan's on riding these on Friday and Saturday.  The file is the forest service's pdf map.

I'm helping him post this, I hope!

I can't even express my disappointment.  Mike and son Jordan are unable to accompany me to this rally and the 20th falls on my anniversary.  I thought I had if covered since the wife was coming to Red Lodge for an FJR rally the following weekend but she is now unable to go.  I'm not sure I can even go on in life missing three DDSR Black Hills rallies in a row.  Calling the depression hot line right now, I'm going to miss you guys. :'(

Terry - Thursday sounds good I have a couple things to do right away in the morning but should be free by10:00? I'll let you know for sure tomorrow.

Dave - Thanks for the technical assistance.

All - the map is my intended routes for Friday and Saturday, both make for a pretty decent day. As mentioned there are multiple places to bail out whenever you've had enough. Don't be fooled by the shorter looking route Saturday as it is more technical and not much for connector roads so it will be a full day if you want it to be. I would recommend downloading the black hills MVUM maps (Not the recreation map), just so you have it. I prefer AVENZA but whatever works for you. Hope to see a decent group for both days!

AVENZA - What Mike said!

Get it downloaded.   In the past, some of ya'll have been hesitant to put this on your phone.

BUT, if you get separated from the group (which has happened) or you need to bail before the group is done riding, this app will get you back to civilization.  Some of the trail systems are really entangled and it's easy to spin circles until you run outta gas or daylight.  There is no cell coverage in a lot of places but your GPS will still function.

You will need at least MVUM Mystic and MVUM Northern Hills

it will work on an old phone even if it isn;t connected as well. I have an old I-phone on my 300 running the AVENZA app. In case you don;t want to risk your "good phone" getting damaged.
