Title: Memorial Day Weekend
Post by: greatbuffalo on May 07, 2020, 11:45:29 PM
Has anyone given any thought to riding Memorial Day weekend?  I have from the 21st till the 28th off.  May be up for some riding, maybe some scouting for Spring Rally.

Assuming traveling from ND is not frowned upon to much I may try to make it for a day or two.

A quick look at calendar says I'm likely out of this.
I started looking at hotels when it hit me.

Deerfield hasn't been camped in a while.  Steel Wheel gets a person closer to the Rally zone for scouting.

Was looking on Avenza Maps and there are lots of trails that allow dispersed camping.
Dave any input on this? Maybe a way to get away from people.
Can bring my generator.

I think you can still camp
Anywhere in the hills, just can't have a fire.

The trick is finding a good spot.

If you look at Avenza maps, anything with "dots"  alongside the trail is ordained for dispersed camping.

There's some bigger spots WAY south, Victoria Lake region would have some room for bigger rigs, theres a sweet little trail just West of Mystic road that would be pretty sweet.

Probably several other spots as well

Not sure if this is the same one, but yes there's a meadow just off of Mystic road to the west.  But can't be seen unless you drive up the trail.  It's right off off the single track that runs through there and intersects the two track trail.  I just don't know the numbers right now.  That would be an excellent spot.

And, don't forget the area around China Gulch and the area west of Slate Creek Dam on the way to Mystic road.

Might be the same place .......    I'm thinking of the north side of 241 or 241.A  -  Seen some horse trailers/campers with their 5th wheels circled up there.

On another note, may be able to rent that cabin from the BHNS at the south end of Boles canyon under the closed off look-out tower.  That would have parking and a place to base outta

I checked the map.  The location is at the intersection of 241 and 6936.

I was thinking about doing a bit of reconnaissance over the next couple of days. There are a few places off of the Nemo road and one kinda right near Nemo itself. Would like to be in the more northern hills but will do what the group wants to do

Dry camping is not problem here.

I like the area around 241 and 6936 but my map doesn't show that area open to dispersed camping.

You are correct. I am looking at that as well. Seems to be an established area though.

It is NF, and many times NF is open unless stated otherwise. I will stop at one of the offices tomorrow and ask.

Anymore thoughts on this?  I am currently planning to load up the camper and couple of bikes and head that way some time late Friday afternoon.

Yup, I am planning on heading that way Friday morning as well. Myself and Mark are planning on boondocking off Custer Crossing road about a mile or so in from 385 on the left hand side. Should be room for a few in there. PM me your phone # and I'll let you know if something changes.

How long you planning being out there?
I may be that way after Sat to deliver that gooseneck. Might put the AT on and ride some....maybe.

Looking like Dan and I won't be camping. I think he is going out on Friday morning. I
am planning on driving the pickup out Friday morning and riding Friday afternoon and Saturday.
Title: Re: Memorial Day Weekend
Post by: locopny on May 18, 2020, 09:26:02 PM
Well maybe I won't bother with the AT then...as Friday and Sat appear to be out for me.
Probably just going to get some more 2 up riding while Dana is still here.

I will still be going out and staying at the Joeltel. Nathaniel and a couple buddies are also coming out and staying at the Paultel. Riding will be dependent on weather. I was going to bring the KLR but stupid me thought I had the correct breaks. Thurns out I did not. So I had to order those. So will roll with the KLX and the Tenere.  Will post as rides are decided on. All will depend on weather intestinal fortitude .

Since weather is a potential concern was able to get a spot FNF.  I have had to leave my camper before, got it stuck in the boonies once  :o...    Bringing the Beta 430 and the Husky 701.

Fletch, Nathaniel is coming out with 2 of his buddies. They have unregistered bikes. I think they would be interested in some single track. I might be talked into some too maybe for a day. Just remember, I'm old, fat and inexperienced on Single Track.

I would entertain some single track...  I am rusty as hell, but have done more single track this year than the entirety of last year.  Sad, but true...

To throw into the planning mix

Sat - mid '70s with rain in the afternoon
Sun - should be dry but cooler - low 60's
Mon - same as Sun

My vote would be meet at the lot across from Sugar Shack at 9:00 - Sat

Ride some of the easy single track and/or fun stuff SW of the Shack.  If everyone is having a good time, head north thru experimental forest and across to Pilot Knob.  If people get tuckered out on single, there's enough two track around that area to explore

Who's in???

Our group will also meet at Sugar Shack. If there are others wanting to ride but not single track, you are welcome to join us. This will depend on weather. If it's thundering or pouring rain I think we will bake.

Just a reminder, if you are riding on a patched tube, and the guy with the tire tools isn't coming to ride with you,.......you might want to throw on a new tube before you head out. Don't ask me how Dave knows..........
