OK, here's the deal:

The 2010 Dakota Dual Sport Riders summer rally will once again be held in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!  Camping will be at the Fish 'n Fry campground just south of Deadwood, SD: http://www.fishnfry.com/

Location is here:

We will be staying on the Hillside Loop.

Dates are June 17, 18, 19 & 20, 2010.  You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, June 17, departing on Sunday, June 20. Weather should be dry and warm - avg high 78, avg low 52.  BUT, this is South Dakota...if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  ;-)  Be aware that there is very spotty cell phone coverage at the campground (can be a good thing), but if you ride to the top of the hill (2 minutes away) most will get a good signal.

Entry Fee: FREE!
Camping: Tents - $7 per person/night, RVs/Campers - $19 per night.  You will pay the campground when you arrive, no pre-payment required. Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get the special discount!

We will have enough room for plenty of tents.  RV sites near the tent sites are at a premium and need to be reserved as far in advance as possible, although there will be plenty of RV spots available away from "ground zero".

The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it).  All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.

Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc.  There will be something for everybody!

The Fish 'n Fry campground (FnF) has full showers (coin operated, bring a couple of quarters if you don't want to smell like a dirty biker!), real bathrooms (with sinks & mirrors!), a general store (with beer), a small restaurant (with beer on tap!) and a grill and shelter we can use if it rains. 24hr gas station/convenience store right across the street, and Deadwood is only 10 minutes away. There are picnic tables, but if you want a guaranteed seat by the fire you better bring your own.

Electricity is available to charge cell phones, iPods, etc., however it is outside, so use at your own risk!

Sportfaller has generously offered to provide some firewood, but expect to pay for any excess wood you may need. The FnF charges a princely sum for their bundles of wood!  (Actually, only around $5.)

Limited food will be provided, but plan on fending for yourself during the day.
-Thursday night will be chili & nachos (courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Yeti)
-Friday night will be sloppy joes (courtesy of grubbie)
-Saturday night will be pulled pork sammies (courtesy of Littlejacket)
-Saturday or Sunday morning will be quiche (courtesy of excess)

Cars, trucks & bike trailers will have room to park, but could be a ways away from your campsite.

Please reply here with your camping preference (tent or RV) and dates you are camping.  Also, return to this post occasionally, as I will be updating it regularly!

Anyone bringing special gifts (good cigars, good tequila, good scotch, good beer) for THE YETI will be given preferred treatment along with my sincerest appreciation!  ;-)

DISCLAIMER:
Anyone attending this event, does so at their own risk. The Yeti, any other DDSR member, the FnF campground or ANYONE BESIDES YOU will not be held responsible for injury to yourself, your bike or gear! Now, let's get out and RIDE THE HILLS!!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Fishing: fishing is allowed along the creek running into and out of their little stock pond, and a fishing license is not required.

RIDES

DIFFICULTY RATING KEY
Class I - Requires 1-2 hours
Class II - Requires half a day
Class III - Requires most of a day
Class IV - Requires a very long day
Class V - Requires an overnight stay on the route
Class VI - Requires a few days
Class VII - Expedition

Grade A is graded dirt road
Grade B is easy jeep road
Grade C is moderate
Grade D is occasionally technical
Grade E is continuously technical
Grade F is gonzo

Camp 5 Road
Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade D
(Since we're in the northern hills again, you just know we'll end up riding it again.  ;D  )

MAP
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=deadwood+sd&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.315864,56.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Deadwood,+Lawrence,+South+Dakota&ll=44.364606,-103.600044&spn=0.063938,0.110378&z=13

DESCRIPTION
Rocky stream beds, some smooth access road, some rocky access road, grapefruit to cantaloupe sized loose rocks, two semi-gnarly hillclimbs, rocky steps, tight two-track in places, fast two-track in places, all tons-o-fun!

TIME
1hr - 2hr ride, depending on your skill/risk-taking level. We took 2.5hrs during one rally with lots of larger, adventure type bikes and some inexperienced riders (such as myself  :P ). Some have claimed to have run it in less than 15 minutes.    :o

PILOT KNOB
Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade D (although one .5 mile section is Grade E)

MAP
(http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn213/Promo_Yeti/Misc/PilotKnobMap.jpg?t=1273622627)

DESCRIPTION
The only portion of the Centennial Trail that is open to motorized travel (from Pilot Knob TH to Dalton TH). Starts off easy, from either the south or north end.  North end offers a really fun ATV trail with lots of whoops & banks.  South end starts off with a short switchback uphill followed by some easy two track and rock strewn two-track...with awesome scenery!  It's the middle bit that will get ya!  Sometimes steep, rocky, narrow single track with some difficult steps, climbs and descents. Not all that bad, but can be challenging even on smaller bikes.  But, keep in mind that flexlarson took some poor guy on a VStrom over Pilot Knob and the guy is still alive, his bike had a few broken bits.   ;D  So, it can't be all that bad!

TIME
1hr - 1.5hr

PICS

This bit will rattle your teeth out if you're suspension is too stiff!  On the south end (I think):

It tends to stay a little wetter up there because the forest is so thick:

Sorry, I don't have any pics of the tuff stuff, you'll have to take my word for it.

249 from Silver City/Slate Creek Dam/The 429
Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade C (although I suppose the 429 could be considered D)

MAP
(Traveling from east to west)

DESCRIPTION
A beautiful (mostly) easy ride on smooth fire roads (= fast!). This is one of my favorite easy rides for some great scenery! The most challenging part is the green section of the 429, but I've been through it with a GSA that had no problems at all.  Just gets a little tight & wet at times. Kind of a long section of gravel on the 231.1 stretch, otherwise, all dirt.

TIME
1.5hr - 2hr

I'm in,...RV site for Friday and Saturday. Not sure what time I'll pull in, depends on when I can sneak out of work. I will, as I always do, have plenty of my friend Jack Daniels on board. By the way if anyone needs to charge cell phones or anything else there is no need to do it outside. Mi RV es su RV.

i'm in, camping the 18th and 19th in a tent.

i may drag my little sis along if i can round up a proper bike for her (or my kdx200 as a last resort).  she wants to get better at street riding and i don't think there is any easier way to do that then put some miles on dirt.

if so, she'll have her own tent.

I am in and should make it out Friday. If she needs a bike she might be able to ride one of the 200's brian or I have. I got one for my wife so needless to say it sits in the garage taking up valuable space next to Ryans bike which is also in my garage taking up space and leaking fork oil ;D

Hey Ryan this would be a great time for you to head up here to ride your bike with some friends and then you can take it home so you can enjoy it in the mountains of Colorado. NO excuses make it work.

+1!  Have you talked with Ryan?  Is he thinking about coming?

I scored an RV from my in-laws, and Mrs. Yeti is gonna come with me this time around!  She doesn't ride, just wanted some camping/chill time and has volunteered to be our acting "campground host", taking care of food, etc.

If anyone else is planning on bringing food (for the group), let me know so we can kinda plan what we need to bring.  The wife & I will be bringing chili & nachos - enough for one meal that will feed everyone, with leftovers I'm sure  ;D

Wow Alan, between the meal and all the planning, its obvious that you are THE MAN!  Thank you!

I'm still undecided as to what I'll be doing, but the more I read about this, the more I lean towards coming Thursday and riding Friday and Sat morning.

Yeti, your awesome and thanks for taking charge of it this year. I would suggest any one that eats kick in a little something for the effort of Mr & Ms Yeti. If we referred to the wife as Ms yeti would she have any idea who we are talking about?

I have talked to him but I think he was castrated and his wife is holding his balls in a jar or in other words, he is not sure if he will make it or not.

Hope you make it out hank.

Yeti, the wife unit that I am bringing will bring enough sloppy joes for a group meal. I don't know how you guys do things, do you come back to camp for lunch? My wife rides but most likely won't ride with us as she is just learning. I'll have to sneak off with her on some light trails sometime during the weekend. Anyway, if sloppy joes is good with everyone, we are happy to do it.

Yeah, about that...Mrs. Yeti & I were talking about the food tonight , and we decided that if we get too many people we probably wouldn't be able to provide "enough for all", it could just be too much.  So, we're thinking about providing dinner just on Thursday night...so far, there's only 6 for Thursday night, and that (plus a few more) would be a manageable number.  ;D  I don't think we (or anyone else) could be expected to provide food for 20+ people. :o

I plan make it up for a while Thursday, but will probably only camp FRI/SAT. I'm feeling skeptical about getting into too much on the GSA with street tires.... so I'm not sure how much riding I'll do (unless I find a bike to use for the weekend).

One of these days a 530EXC will grace my garage....

Got you on the IN list!

No worries with the GSA, we'll take it easy on you, I swear!   :evil ;D  Seriously, you ride that thing like a dirt bike, even with street tires on, you'd be fine on fireroads, right?  We can plan a couple of easy rides to the rough stuff, then you can just peel off and enjoy yourself, then meet back up at camp for beers!

Well I think my plans have firmed up to:

Ride out on the 400 Thursday morning, camp Thur night and ride Friday.   Camp w/ the fam Fri / Sat night at the rafter J but probably ride more at least Sat morning, then head home Sunday.

So put me down for a tent spot for Thursday night only.

Not sure who all will come w/ me.  Dustin hasn't said much yet (Dustin are you coming) and I might have another rookie from work riding along.

Anyone coming from the East is more than welcome to meet up w/ me (or us).

Can't wait!

Hi Alan,

I'm still working on getting my WR426 plated but I've got the Super Sherpa back from my daughter, so I'll have at least one dual sport bike.  I think I'll save the Weestrom from embarrassment this year.  I'll be trailering the bike(s) up.  I'll need a tent site.  Thanks for your efforts on this event.

Arrrgh!  Decisions, decisions!  Yeah, it is so much fun that I would be stupid to miss any of it.  I'll get there the 17th.  You realize that you may be tasked with stretcher duty if I forget my age and get frisky with that 426?  Just kidding.  At my age, I find restraint easier than convalescing.  Never did learn to ride that too-tall thing, anyway.

You're correct in questioning my connecting my 2001 ride with the DDSR. I've since had someone "jog" my memory. I rode with a group from Omaha that met up with a group from Minnesota. The Minnesota people put the ride together. Soooo, this will be my 1st ride with the DDSR and second off-road ride in the Hills.

Also... at one time I mentioned that I was renting a room at FNF and would have room for another gal that might need a place to stay. That's changed. My husband Jeff has decided to come out. No, he isn't going to ride. He doesn't do "dirt". We have relatives in Rapid so while we're out riding, he'll be tossing back Fat Tire with his brother and his Dad. Now, you might be thinking he's the smarter of the two of us. THINK AGAIN!!!!  :D

Really looking forward to the ride and meeting some neat new people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Joni

I updated the food in the first post. Mrs. Yeti and I weren't expecting the turn-out we have for Thursday night and decided that chickens would be too much work.  ;D  We're bringing chili & nachos instead! There will be more than enough, and probably left overs to last a couple days for lunches, snacks, whatever.

I just talked with the FnF to update them on our totals and they would like to know the sizes of RVs we are bringing. So, could all of you that are bringing RVs let me know what size yours is?

Well, dinner on Saturday is still up in the air, but Chad and/or Brian usually bring something, although I haven't heard anything from either of them on food, sooo.....

BUT, since you aren't camping, I can't expect you to feed us and then leave...that just seems wrong somehow.   ;D

The wife and I offered to make sloppy joes for the group Friday night. We are getting a pretty good sized group here. Can we get a count on how many will be there for dinner that night (including wives or whoever else will be there)? We need to know how much to make. You can PM me with your info so this thread doesn't get so long. Also, I see folks offering to help. I wouldn't be against someone else bringing buns, chips, salad, or whatever you like.

Mr Yeti -

Bumped into your upcoming rally via ADVrider last weekend.   Fantasized about it for a couple of days and then re-arranged my schedule at work.  I'd to be #30.

What about it?  Will you take a putzer from Upper Dakota and his Transalp?  I'd be coming from Fargo, bringing a tent, and would camp the nights of 17, 18, and 19.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting such a big turn-out either! There are usually multiple bags of chips floating around at any given time, so that won't be a problem. If someone wants to volunteer to bring buns and salads, that would be great!

From my count, we will have around 22 for dinner Friday night.
Here's a recipe for sloppy joes for 100 people, so you could just make 1/4 recipe and be fine.
http://www.ellenskitchen.com/bigpots/bbentree5.html

We would need about 5-6lbs of salads (potato, macaroni, 3 bean, whatever).

We will have a large roaster to cook/keep warm the sloppy joe meat if needed.

The thing I think we're gonna be most short on is buns...gonna need some for the sloppy joes and for Ryan's pulled pork. Salads would be good too...are you still bringing the quiche?? We could just wait and see and buy what we need when we get there (at the convenience store, or run into Deadwood and get it at the grocery store).

Title: Tips for The Trail
Post by: The Yeti on June 09, 2010, 12:48:19 PM
Hey all, just wanted to post up some guidelines we should all try to follow out there on the trail. I posted these a couple years ago here on the board, but we've never had a large enough group to really put them into practice:  ;D

PRE-RIDE BRIEFING: Let the less experienced riders know that it's OK to ride at their own pace, cover basic rules, customs, hand signals, etc.

SPEAK UP: If you're having a problem, be it speed, difficulty with the terrain, feel tired or just not well, SPEAK UP.

DON'T RIDE WAY OVER YOUR HEAD: I'm not saying don't push the envelope a bit, that's how we get to be better riders, but be realistic.

GROUPING: When riding with larger groups, try to break up into smaller groups of 5-6 riders each, with at least one more experienced rider in each group.

YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RIDER BEHIND YOU: Stop at all non-obvious turns until they see you turn. Keep their headlight in your mirrors if you can. If you haven't seen them in a couple minutes, slow down, if you haven't seen them in a couple more minutes, stop. After a couple more minutes, turn around and look CAREFULLY.

LEAD & SWEEP: More experienced riders should be in the lead & sweep positions. They should rotate the lead & sweep positions so as not to get bored.

FASTER UP FRONT, SLOWER TO THE BACK: This allows the faster riders to stretch their legs a bit without being held up by the slower, less experienced riders, with frequent stops thrown in to allow the slower guys to catch up.

SPACING: 2-4 seconds is the optimum spacing from the bike in front of you. If he happens to go down or needs to stop suddenly, you want enough time to react and not run the poor guy over!

PUSHING: If you find yourself behind a rider that's going at a considerably slower pace, try to stay further back until there's an opportunity to pass. If you follow too close, the slower rider may try to push beyond his limits as he thinks he's holding you up.

PASSING: Do not pass unless the rider you're passing knows it's coming. Either wait to be waved by, or wait for the next stop. Flashing of high-beams should be considered a signal the rider behind you wants to pass.

COMMUNICATE: At each stop, allow time after the last guy pulls up in case there is anything that needs to be communicated, can be just a quick thumbs-up from everyone, then take off for the next leg.

Stay hydrated and fed.

Oh, and it should go without saying that you should try to be ATGATT. Personally, I refuse to ride with anyone that does not at least wear a helmet. Knee & elbow pads, even better.  Proper MX boots, great! Myself? I look like a Stormtrooper when I ride  :o, but I can bounce off just about anything!  ;D

We all want to be safe and have fun, but the safest rides aren't that much fun and the fun rides, not that safe...finding a balance is the key.

You are IN! Like loingrader sez, we usually get rolling between 9-10am. We probably won't have any formal pre-ride meeting or anything, it goes more like this:

"OK, who's got a plan?"
"What?"
"Where we goin'?"
"Hell, I don't know.."
"Hey, that guys lookin' at a map! He must be leading!!"   ;D ;D ;D

Actually, this time around, we may need a bit more formal planning, cause all 30+ of us aren't gonna be able to ride together for sure!  I've got a couple rides laid out earlier in this thread, and some ideas in my head, and a lot of the regulars REALLY know their way around the trails, so I'm sure we won't be lacking on places to consider riding, it's the deciding part that we usually get hung up on.   ;D

Well...the rain is supposed to stop today! Seems like it's been raining for weeks now.   :(

Just a warning....there WILL BE MUD for the rally, regardless of where you ride!  On the plus side, the weather is looking to be perfect this weekend - mid-70s, chance of t-storms, but no constant rain.

Only 3 days to go!!   ;D ;D

The way it's been raining, I'm wondering if we need to install airbox snorkels.  :evil

I ordered a set of Pirelli MT21's, supposed to be here tomorrow. The stock tires on the WRR don't like mud, plus mine were just about done @3500 miles.

Finally the time is nigh! Myself and another rider will arrive F&F late Wed night. Plan on doing some sight seeing Thur and Fri. Stop by for some meet and greet along with a cold beverage! Don't know when we will be in camp but can be reached on 319-750-4773 and will meet somewhere. Just remember "the second BSer doesn't stand a chance".

Did you call FnF and let them know you're showing up a day early? I'm sure there's plenty of room, but you may get stuck away from the DDSR area. And, am I correct in assuming you won't be riding with us until Saturday? Also, I've got you down for yourself plus 3...are you only bringing 1 extra now?

See you in a couple days!

Hello all, got the oil changed on the new to me 500mi clean DR 650. So with breaking complete I will be there maybe Thursday or Fri. But 100% effort and 90% probably Sat. No camping as FnF is really only about 1 hr or less from house. naturally I will be with the group that takes the new bike clean mud free trails (in the words of the famous Yeti {I hate mud})... mmm that kinda sounded like pavement  :-\ well anyway looking forward to it. sorry about the last minute notice.

Got you on the list Icey.  I've kinda got a love/hate thing going with the mud these days...the WRR seems to really like the stuff, me not so much!

See you there!

If any of you guys are in Rapid thurs night we are grilling for my daughters b-day around 5-6pm.

Yes, I did notify F&F and they said they could accomodate us and will try to get us with the DDSR group. The final count coming from Iowa is 5. The other 3 will show up Thursday night. If the group is riding Friday we plan on going with. If you have a set time to report on Fri please let me know. We have no special plans, just glad to be included in the ride. Possibly we can sponsor a ride for you folks in our neck of the woods! I have lodging for 4 people at my place and I am sure the others will chip in. Again, it is a real treat to be included! We don't expect to participate in your meals unless we can pay. I am bringing a barbeque (sp) and would be glad to throw something on for someone. The last thing we want to do is create any issues.

I only talked to him about Fri and I know but I can't leave Mr back rub at my house trying to work on his bike by himself. I am talking my girls to Vivian on Fri morning early so I should be able to ride some time on Fri and just head back Fri night.

I plan on being at the FnF fri afternoon (noon-2pm).  Is there going to be someone at the camp all day directing traffic, or should we just hang around until a group forms and them go out and ride. (I think I just answered my own question).  If we need to share phone #'s let me know.

Let's say Friday at 9am, probably roll out around 9:30 or 10am.

I'm gonna have more chili and nachos than I know what to do with on Thursday night, you guys are all welcome to dig in! No issues...it's all good!  ;D

Well, I know for sure that my wife will be there (she doesn't ride). I'll give her a plan of where my group plans to be and when...this could turn out to be accurate or wildly in-accurate depending on how lost we get.  ;D

My cell is 605-381-thirteen-seventy-six, but the coverage up there is spotty at best.

I am planning on being at FNF at around 1pm on friday.  After i set up camp, I'll take out whoever wants to go.  I can point you to the fun boulder strewn trails but I'll be sticking to the easier stuff because my little sister will be in tow and i want her to have a good time.  She just got her motorcycle license today.

I assume that people will be arriving at different times throughout the weekend so it will be easy to just tag along with someone.  Great trails are everywhere though so don't feel like you have to wait for a tourguide.

Unless the weather really gets ugly, I have Kurt riding with me from Watertown.
He'll be camping all three nights, I'm just camping Thursday.

We're riding out Thursday with Onsabrock, Hipster (from MSP) and Wacked (Fargo).

The way it's been raining, I'm wondering if we need to install airbox snorkels.  :evil

I ordered a set of Pirelli MT21's, supposed to be here tomorrow. The stock tires on the WRR don't like mud, plus mine were just about done @3500 miles.
Not good........I am running stockers on my WRR, you are right they don't like mud. I ran out of time to get tires. Almost wasn't going to make it at all due to work issues, but firmed up the plans today. I'll be there! Of course,.....I will be the one you guys are towing out of the mud all day. My tires don't like mud, neither do I. My first time doing something like this and I can't tell you how excited I am about it!

I'm so excited I could.... well never mind. We'll leave the body fluids out of it. The KLX is ready to go. New FMF for the FNF  ;D and new Dunlop D952's. I'll help push/pull anyone out of the mud if they'll pick me up when I fall down. Can't wait to ride and meet all you great people!!!!!!!!!   ::)   See you Thursday evening at FNF.             Joni

P.S. I'll help with groceries and the like when I get there. Just let me know what's needed.

I'm riding the 400 out.  Kurt has an 08 KLR.
Well the forecast has actually improved, which goes against all odds.   Hopefully a day or two of sunshine will dry up some mud.
Looks like we could have some showers coming out tomorrow but Fri and Sat look splendid!

Should be lotsa fun!

Yeti;

Major change of plams for me.  Won't be able to camp, may get up there for a ride.  Had a horse come down sick last night so............ I'll be playing horse Doc for the next week or two.  Sorry about the late notice, not much I could do.

I rode a few trails around Nemo this afternoon/evening... trails are drying up nicely, it's not going to be the 24/7 mudfest I expected. Depends on the trail of course... some are wet and the bike still got plenty muddy. But airbox snorkel is optional! Weather looks good for Fri-Sun.

Everyone who's traveling, have a safe trip. See you Friday.

Don't forget we are bringing sloppy joes for Friday night dinner, hopefully someone has the buns, chips, whatever, covered. Our home raised grass fed beef,,,yummy! I am not sure what time we will be there, hopefully not too late, but we will be there. Depends on work. She flies in from Houston at around noon, I will try and sneak out as soon as possible but some days it's tough to get away.
