The 3rd annual Dakota Dual Sport Riders fall rally will be held from September 16-19, 2010. DDSR base camp will be at the Nemo Guest Ranch in Nemo, SD: http://www.nemoguestranch.com/

Dates are September 16, 17, 18 & 19, 2010. You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, September 16, departing on Sunday, September 19. Check out is very flexible, so you can ride all day Sunday if you so wish. Weather may be cool and damp - avg high 71, avg low 46 - so bring your heavy sleeping bag and appropriate riding gear! Back in 1998, it was in the 90's during this same week, so....who really knows!
Entry Fee: FREE!
Camping: Tents - $12 per person/night, RVs/Campers - $20 per night. You will pay the campground when you arrive, no pre-payment required. Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get the special discount!
We will have enough room for plenty of tents. RV sites are plentiful as well, I think there are 6 RV sites very close to the tent sites. Cars, trucks & bike trailers will have plenty of room to park right next to our campsite.
Please reply here with your camping preference (tent or RV) and dates you are camping.
The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it). All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.
Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc. There will be something for everybody!
The Nemo Guest Ranch (NGR) has full showers, bathrooms, a general store (with beer), a full service restaurant and a bar. They also have very large fire pits (yeah, bonfires!). First gas is about 10 minutes away.
Limited food will be provided, but plan on fending for yourself during the day.
-Friday night will (probably) be chili & nachos (courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Yeti)

Rocky stream beds, some smooth access road, some rocky access road, grapefruit to cantaloupe sized loose rocks, back-breaking boulders :o, two semi-gnarly hillclimbs, rocky steps, tight two-track in places, fast two-track in places, all tons-o-fun!

1hr - 2hr ride, depending on your skill/risk-taking level. We took 2.5hrs during one rally with lots of larger, adventure type bikes and some inexperienced riders (such as myself :P ). Some have claimed to have run it in less than 15 minutes. :o

Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade D (although one .5 mile section is Grade E)

DESCRIPTION
The only portion of the Centennial Trail that is open to motorized travel (from Pilot Knob TH to Dalton TH). Starts off easy, from either the south or north end. North end offers a really fun ATV trail with lots of whoops & banks. South end starts off with a short switchback uphill followed by some easy two track and rock strewn two-track...with awesome scenery! It's the middle bit that will get ya! Sometimes steep, rocky, narrow single track with some difficult steps, climbs and descents. Not all that bad, but can be challenging even on smaller bikes. But, keep in mind that flexlarson took some poor guy on a VStrom over Pilot Knob and the guy is still alive, his bike had a few broken bits. ;D So, it can't be all that bad!

DESCRIPTION
A beautiful (mostly) easy ride on smooth fire roads (= fast!). This is one of my favorite easy rides for some great scenery! The most challenging part is the green section of the 429, but I've been through it with a GSA that had no problems at all. Just gets a little tight & wet at times. Kind of a long section of gravel on the 231.1 stretch, otherwise, all dirt.

Realise this is a noob's view of the world of DS...
Grade I - 1-2 hours
Grade II - less than half day
Grade III - half day
Grade IV - full day
Grade V - two day
Grade VI - multi day
Grade VII - ride lasting more than a week
then you can use modifiers for detail, like (+) for extended range >120 miles between gas stops
Class 1 - pavement (it is dual sport after all).
Obstacles: cages and tar snakes.
Recommend: Blackbird, Harley?
Class 2 - well graded 2-lane (county road)
Obstacles: cattle guards, gravel, mud when wet.
Recommend: bike with upright riding position.
Class 3 - primary fire road/forest road (single lane)
Obstacles: Loose gravel a few inches deep, shallow stream crossings, shallow sand.
Recomend: knobbies, longer travel suspension.
Class 4 - two track, burm in center
Obstacles: Ruts, mud or sand several inches deep, steep grades, rocks or boulders, Most difficult obstacles have multiple lines, or the risk of injury/damage is minimal.
Recomend: Standard 18/21 knobbies, bark busters, weight/suspension/ground clearance all become important factors
Class 5 - Singletrack. Increased difficulty and or risk of injury/damage beyond class 4
Obstacles: Large logs, deep ruts, combinations of obstacles frequent, fewer or no options around difficult obstacles. The use of momentum and the ability to loft the front become essential.
Recomend: Purpose-built off road motorcycle substantially under 300 pounds.
Class 6 - Requires carrying or lifting of the bike beyond extreme obstacles, or abnormally high risk of severe injury or death if you miss your line.
Obstacles:
Recomend: Trials bike, parachute.
There are wide varieties in rides and riders, but the goal of a rating system is to make a standard from which to judge a route, even if you already know you can rock the GS through the singletrack. What's really necessary is to compare some rides and use them as the baseline.

Grade VII for the 2 weeks+ it takes the average Joe, and Class 2 for the sections of Dalton?
A typical Black Hills ride might look like III, 4

I will be there but wont be camping as I live 20 min away, looking forward to it. Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist in the preparation for this.
Alan....Regarding Camping....
I think it's great that the group is changing "base camp", however, the Cabins at Nemo are pretty expensive compared to the little room I had at Fish N' Fry. I know it sounds wimpy but I prefer a real bed as opposed to sleeping on the ground. I did a lot of that when I was younger. Now, if your offering a place to stay in your RV that's a whole different story! ;D
Also....I'm thinking about getting into the GPS thing. Any recommendations on brand/models, etc.?

and Joni, get an exped synmat to sleep on. they are better than an air mattress and only slightly less comfy than a real bed.

I'm really liking the Garmin 60csx, waterproof and decent software available. I used a RAM mount to fix it to the bike handlebars. it's on the spendy side but I'm delighted with the product, well worth checking into IMHO.

I like it! But, I'm gonna stick with what I have for now. I'm really not very experienced off-road, and my opinion of any given trail's difficulty is VERY subjective, but really all I have to go on. So, take any of my trail ratings with a grain of salt.
If anyone else would like to add a ride or two to the RIDES post, just PM me with the details (map, pics, description) and I'll post it up! And, if anyone disagrees with my assessment of any RIDES, don't hesitate to call me on it.
Of course, we will be repeating some of our rides from June since we're in the same area...and I haven't had the chance to go out and find any new trails with my injuries. Hoping to get back on the bike very soon, though!

I've got an older Garmin Etrex Venture that I got off some inmate at ADV for around $130. If I would ever really sit down and learn how to use it, it would probably be a great piece of equipment. As it is now, I basically use it as a clock and speedo. ;D

OK, got the rates...not as good as I hoped, but still not bad:
Tents - $12 per person/night
RVs/Campers - $20 per night

I recently bought a Garmin 76CSX which an updated version of the 60 series. I like it really well except it is hard to see account the small screen. This is true of any brand unless you spend big bucks and get into the larger screen models. The initial expense of buying the receiver is about $300. What gets really expensive is buying the maps. I bought the Garmin 24K maps which have the most detail but are priced at $130 apiece and cover only a portion of the US. To cover the complete USA you will need 6 maps. Soooo I have more invested in maps than the receiver! I went with the Garmin brand account they have the best maps and can link with Goggle Earth. I used it in the BH and found it to be very accurate. You definately need a paper map and compass also account the names of the roads in Garmin do not always correspond with the names on the map. I surely don't want to discourage you from using GPS because if I, one who is computer challenged, can figure it out you surely can.

I would expect that if you told them you were with DDSR, you could get a 20% discount on these rates since that's what she gave me for the tent & RV sites.
These are all their cabins, from their website:
BAR 5
is vintage Nemo and is our smallest cabin with a bathroom, small kitchenette, a full size bed and covered porch. ($90/night)
DOUBLE T
is another vintage Nemo cabin which looks like the Bar 5 with aged pine, small bathroom, but two bedrooms each with a full size bed and a covered porch. ($98/night)
MARTIN HOUSE
was once a Nemo schoolhouse. This is now two separate units. Each unit has a small bathroom and two rooms each with a double bed. ($98/night)
BOARDING HOUSE
was once the Nemo Hotel. It has been redesigned into a four-plex arrangement with two units upstairs each with two double beds, shower, kitchenette, and outdoor covered porch entrance. The B3 bottom unit has a shower, 2 double beds, double size fouton bunk bed, and deck overlooking the trout stream. The other bottom unit, B4, has a kitchen, living area with fireplace, bedroom and bath. The two bottom units can be opened together to form one unit. ($98/unit/night)
BUNK HOUSE
Once the Doctors Quarters/Infirmary, it has three bedrooms, with a total of four beds, a kitchen and large bathroom. Very sunny and decorated in a comfortable fashion. ($248/night)
TROXELL HOUSE
is an old ranch style house with large living area, kitchen, two downstairs bedrooms each with one double bed, downstairs bathroom, upstairs bedroom with two double beds and two single beds. Comes with a covered porch. ($248/night)
CIRCLE 6
is a two-story cabin with four rooms and six double beds upstairs and one bedroom downstairs, kitchen, living area, dining area and one bathroom. ($298/night)
4-T
Nemo's one-room School House, the 4-T is one of our newly remodeled, fully-winterized cabins, a favorite for Christmas vacationers, snowmobilers and hunters. It has three bedrooms downstairs each with a full bed, a loft with two full size beds, one large bathroom, living area with gas fireplace and kitchen. ($298/night)
BIG HOUSE
is like a large farm/plantation house, our largest cabin, with high ceiling rooms, large livingroom and kitchen and two bathrooms. There are three bedrooms downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs and a total of eight full size beds. This is our favorite family reunion house, large porch and large, grassy, tree-filled yard. ($365/night)
RANCH HOUSE
is newly remodeled and winterized. It has two bathrooms, an upstairs dorm style room with four full size beds, three bedrooms downstairs each with a full size bed, kitchen, and living area with gas fireplace. The Ranch House may be divided into two separate units. ($365/night)

I did some Mt biking last week in the Nemo area that eventually hooked up with pilot knob trail but started farther down the road from pilot knob and found a really nice camp ground back there.

Well, thanks! Not sure what nights, but at the min, I will be there to ride at least Thursday and Saturday. I would love to tent with you guys, but the mrs is not much of a camper and I live in Deadwood, so the ride back and forth would not be bad. I'll be there by myself, unless you count my KLR as two. I am very new to this dirt stuff, but going after it none the less. I am slow in the dirt, but getting better all the time. Might be able to follow some of you guys - some of the time. See you in Sept.

Sorry, but I'm gonna bail on tomorrow. Gonna be REALLY hot, but cooler on Sunday...I think I'll ride Sunday instead. ;D And, I still have a few tweaked bits on my bike I need to work on before riding it, and will work on that tomorrow. Plus, I think my first time off road since the crash, I should take it kinda easy...gonna hit some of the easier trails close to home that I'm
very familiar with.

I did get a DS ride in this week around Bear Mt lookout and around deerfield lake but did not see much for trails. I wonder since they are national parks in the southern hills it limits the off road trails?

I believe I found it on Google earth so yeah. Make it 130 that's a haul on the berg and ill have to pack up camp beforehand

I've been reading the posts and trying to figure a way to attend the rally, but not going to work from the looks of things. Jake and I rode past the camp you guys are going to on our way home and what a fantastic road! Be safe and have fun folks!
Well looks like I will be ob the not attendee list. Wife and I may drop by as she loves Nemo area, but I am sure it would be on my RT and not DR. Then shortly after she is seeking my return to the swamp.... man I hate that place. She gets 2 more years then I am outa there. However it was warm today here too but at least the western side didn't have 86% humidity. Be safe and enjoy a chopper free rally.

I would certainly love to join you all this fall but I'm due back on the ship Sept 12th. I want to know how NDave likes his DL1000. It would be more than a handful on the Pilot Knob single track. I'd like to bring my son along one of these times to show him why I thought it was worth the trouble to plate the 426.

I won't be camping.
well we just got the contract to be here till november.. so im in.. ill be campin in my tent. ridin my 9fiddy with a dwindiling tire (but ill be right there with ya all). the last rally hanging out with you guys was great.. i can't wait for more.. i may bring a harley ridin buddy or 2 agian.. just to keep the boredom down durring the ride out.. good guys..

Looks like the only ones coming on Thursday are myself, Mrs. Yeti, Wacked & excess...so all of us will be around Friday, but will most likely be in and out on rides. Mrs. Yeti will be staying at the campsite though, and we will leave a flight plan with her, if we follow it is anybody's guess. ;D

So, sorry, no food from us on Thursday night, you guys will have to fend for yourselves! We'll still be bringing something for Friday, though...most likely chili & nachos again, but may come up with something else. ;D

So Yeti, I'm watching the weather. So far I'm thinking tent; but my Mrs. may bump it to camper status if it's looking too wet or cold. How flexible is this Nemo outfit to upgrade? Are the tent sites powered?

RV spots will be plentiful, and there is power & water available for tents. Just have to set up next to a set of hook-ups, I'm sure there'll be plenty open for us. If not, you can plug into my camper if you need to. ;D

well i just got some news... im headin to work on maui till christmass.. so i won't make the rally, i was looking foreward to it. but im chosin maui ;D you guys made the summer out here a little more bearable. i have a good friend that may show up out there.. his name is sven.. from north dakota.. ridin a 690e.. great guy, if anyone sees him tell him i say hey. thanks all! and i may just show up out in the hills someday with some colorado friends and some small bikes..

Well guys, looks like Mrs. Yeti & I will NOT be camping this weekend. :'( Had something come up at work. I will probably be able to come and ride on Saturday and/or Sunday though.
I will still make sure that everything is ready for you guys at Nemo Guest Ranch, but there will be no food provided by me this time around.
Work always gets in the way of life it seems....
This weekend will be about quality and not quantity. Should be fun.

It's pretty darn cold this morning and I have a few "sore" spots from a couple of spills yesterday. Y'know when you get that feeling that you're not going to be "one with the bike"? Well I'm feeling it.

BTW. Loingraders dad "Porkchop" found a tire PSI guage I had dropped on the trail, so you just never know about that earring. We'd better go out next weekend and ride some more to try and find it ;D
