Title: Moab anyone?
Post by: jacin theis on September 19, 2010, 09:04:10 PM
So not trying to highjack the club. But it came up in conversation at the fall rally that a large group would be interested in a trip to Moab in the spring. Plumber Mikes freind Matt from Colorado spends a lot of time there, and suggestged that the 30 days after April 22 is prime weather. He also said he has a lot of maps and routes already. So with Matt and ADVRider as resources, it coiuld be a great trip. I am already trying to plan for some time off then. I am trying to see if anyone else is interested and serious. I think i would try to take the family as there is a lot to do in ther area, even if they dont ride.

So, any takers?

Wow. 8 Views and nobody want's to hit Moab? Let's firm up some dates. I would think it would be cool to find some backroads/dirt roads to get there as well. For me, the trip there and back is just as much fun as the destination.

I'll say I'm in for now, but with a baby coming in Feb., nothing is for sure ???

Talking about May sometime? That might work for me... Looks like beautiful country, it would be a hell of a ride from Minnesota.

I was down there 2 summers ago, I have family 30 min. away.   Great riding, but hot as hell in august.  there are some great spots in CO to hit on the way south.  I destroyed a set of TKC's in 2000 miles that trip!

Well Ive made that trip 3-4 times on the DR and twice on the Dakar.
Its a fun ride down. Moab is a blast but the ride back is generally less fun. Last two times chad has met me in wyoming and rode back with me.
There are allot of fun spots to hit on the way there or back.
Alpine loop is fun. http://www.alpineloop.com/HTML/index.html
Could run engineer pass and maybe pearl pass.
Moab is great anyplace you decide to go.

I may be interested in May.

Spring is getting pretty close.  I'm now in a position to start thinking of such a trip.  I may be interested if all goes well.  I'm growing more fond of the idea of trailering part of the way.  How far is yet to be determined.  Maybe to Colorado and ride from there.
What sort of a budget would one expect to encounter on such a trip, for those who have gone before?  I've found it pretty easy to be fairly tight fisted on trips in the past and prefer the more "rustic" adventures, especially in dry climates.
I could think of nothing better than riding that area with the folks that I've met through DDSR.

Iwas starting to think maybe no one was interested, :-\ or i had overstepped my bounds in suggesting this trip. I thought this would be a great family trip for everyone. The wife and kids can keep busy hiking or shoppping at the many stores in Moab, and ther is a lot of variety to ride in the area for those on bikes. There are also several really good restaurants.  I know there are some great campgrounds in town and on the edge of Moab.I am sure it wouldnt be a big deal to find one to accomodate motorcyclists. I will try to check out the campgrounds soon and let everyone know what options there are. Hope we can get a group together. The fall rally was a blast. EVERYONE was great to meet and visit with. Looking forward to more rides together.

Hi everyone.......Remember Me????  :o First of all, count me in as highly probable for a Moab trip in the spring. Second... remember that little hamstring injury I had on Friday this past fall that kept me from riding on Saturday? Well, to make a long story short, over the next six weeks it got a lot worse. Turned into a badly torn meniscus in my left knee. Had it operated on the 8th of this month. Healing is going very well. End of story.
Another thought about Moab........ Would my KLX250 be "big" enough or do you need a more of a "dual sport" type bike?
Would love to see all of you soooooon!

sheesh, nothing like making the cost of a trip go up. You and Yeti are making me scared to ride.....Wheres Yeti been anyway?   Hope surgery went well. I would say from the way you rode the 250 on Pilots Knob, you would be fine at Moab. My feeling too small is better than too big. (dont want to see anyone get hurt ;))    Others might disagree, but as long as your comfortable with what ever you ride. I need to get in touch with Snooky on recomendations for lodging as he has spent time in Moab a lot more recently than I.   Hope you are well.

Joni - Glad you hear you got the knee resolved.  Sorry to hear that going under a knife was part of the solution.

Jacin - This Moab thing is TAUNTING me - I hate it.  OK, I'll put my hat in the ring for going.  Maybe I'll even have to "justify" getting different bike for this tripjavascript:void(0); .

If you go to Moab and want to go to Arrowhead Motorsports
It is a few miles south of Moab.
Go south untill you see a shell gas station on the left turn there
Go to the next street to the right turn there
(about 100 yards) down the road there is a sign on a post
on the right side of the road, turn in there he works out of his garage.
He has a good inventory of parts.

Great site Joni! I have riden part of Slick Rock on a bicycle and really wished for my motorcycle. White Rim has been the reason i want to go to Moab. If this site doesnt get anyone excited, then you should be riding a moped :D    Might have to bring a couple of bikes for options and backup.    I need a feel for what most people prefer for lodging. Of you that have expressed interest, are you thinking camping or hotel? Maybe we can find a mix with cabins etc. Like a KOA type of place. I am considering pulling my camper, but with fuel, speed and wear, it may be better to just get a hotel. Give me your ideas, I am starting my research and want to make it as appealing as possible.

I'd really like to do this trip, and bring the whole family.   That means for me it would have to be late May (school), but I realize there are a lot of schedules to accommodate and that might not work.

Other option would be over Easter, but I'm sure that would cause oodles of conflicts for people.
Title: Re: Moab anyone?
Post by: jacin theis on November 14, 2010, 06:08:38 PM
It will be after school but not Easter for sure. That is probably the biggest weekend for Jeeps at Moab. Dont need the traffic or the hostilities. If anyone else has date ideas, post them. It will help to nail down the cost of accomadations.  let the planning begin.

I'm here on the forum just about everyday, but not much to contribute since I haven't been riding much.  I have got out about 4 or 5 times since June, but nothing too challenging...I think I'm still trying to get my confidence back after the "big crash".  Last time I went out though, I was most definitely "in the zone" - not a single mistake over my favorite loop, and I was pushing it pretty good.   :evil ;D

Im likely going to be hauling the KTM to Moab Dec 26th and stayin till the 4th of January. Ill be meeting up with a buddy from salt lake. Anyone interested let me know.

I could also be persuaded to go down aroung easter time as I like to go the week b4 or after the Jeep safari. ,
Title: Re: Moab anyone?
Post by: Sportfaller on November 18, 2010, 09:35:24 AM
definitely avoid moab during waster jeep safari.  there will be no camping to be found, and motels book months in advance.  Earlier is better due to weather, it gets hot as hell down there.  There is also great riding over the border in CO. about 30 miles east.

BTW, I hate you all for bringing this up, because now i REALLLY want to go again. ::)

well then Sportfaller, come along. It would be fun to ride with you off road this time. This is sounding like a fun trip. lots of potential for group rides, and many options for differant levels. Do i hear a branch group called "Arches Dual Sport Riders"?
Title: Re: Moab anyone?
Post by: Sportfaller on November 19, 2010, 07:35:56 AM
My next question is what are you riding Jacin, your GSA or your WR?  the WR would be exceptional on the trails, our GSA's however... We'd have to be a little more selective on where we go
Title: Re: Moab anyone?

It is fun following this thread.  I rode thru the Moab area on my Honda Blackbird in May of 09 with my brother.  Ride report http://dev.dakotadualsportriders.com/smf/index.php?topic=306.0 (http://dev.dakotadualsportriders.com/smf/index.php?topic=306.0).  I knew that I would be back on a dual sport bike (and hopefully a samurai and a mountain bike too) someday.

Who knows what spring will bring but if it works out I'll ride the KLR out for as long as I can be gone, which I know will not be long enough!

Thanks for the planning Jacin!

Post by: jacin theis on November 19, 2010, 06:05:13 PM
Well, i plan on bringing both. There are too many options to ride. The bigger issue is that i would be really upset if i went that far and broke my bike, knowing the other was in the garge at home. Plus, then i can get a little bit crazy on the WR. My wife sounds like she doesnt want to take the kids that far, so if i can figure out a trailer for the WR behind the GS i might try that. If not i have a long box, crew cab. Carpool anyone? with a trailer on the back i have room for four. I would like to ride out though, so i am up for ideas from anyone. Any REALLY great trails from here to there we cant miss?

So i have been doing a little internet research, and found this place that sounds pretty good. From what i remember of Moab, the location is great. I think that pretty much all the campgrounds are used to loud trucks and cycles. I will call them tommorrow and discuss availability. Did anyone have dates they were really set on?  Per the optimum weather window Snookie gave us, i am looking at the weekends  May 14 or 21. The 21st is getting close to Memorial day, so i am leaning towards the 14th. Speak up! I dont want to hear "if it was a differant weekend i could have made it".  ::)

This trip sounds like fun to me, I went out last year in mid-April and had a blast. It would be a lot better/safer to ride in a group, I had fun riding mostly by myself, but those rocks are HARD, and it would be nice to have a safety net. I will have to look up the campground we stayed at, I cant remember the name, but it was really nice, located just south of town. Concerning bike choice, I took a WR250R and it worked out pretty good, it handled all the more scenic/easier trails just fine, however if you want to get into some of the more gnarly stuff, a lighter better suspended bike would be a lot less work. The problem is you really need a plated bike with all the DOT stuff on it to connect the trails, and to ride in the park if you do get stopped they will check you right down to the tires! It all depends on what you want to do there are tons of roads/trails that are a blast on a big DS, but there are also lots of trails that would be a lot more fun on a trail bike, I think the WR was a good compromise, and a KLX would be every bit as good, in fact I rode with a guy on a moded KLX250S up there and he was seriously ripping it up on the slick rock trail, no problems at all. Ideally I would want to take a plated dirt bike, like a 450/250XCW, and a good dual sport WRR/KLR/DRZ/XR... with me if I had a chance to get down there again then, that way you could trailer,or ride the dirt bike to the trailheads of the nasty trails, and still have the dual sport to explore the park and some of the other trails. Please put me down as a maybe.

Jacin -

Thanks for your work on this project.....

5/14 or 21 sound like a nice time of year for Moab!  Unfortunately, I'll be elbow deep into "Graduation" festivities and know for certain that I would not be able to attend these weeks.  If it happened a month earlier, that could work.

All for now...  one vote in.

I am still planning to set up a trip. Provided that people stop planning my summer for me (weddings and reunions).   I am still thinking about driving so i can take both the GS and the WR. it would be great to add a couple of folks and bikes to split the cost. Keep me in mind, i will know more after i see how the schedule for a reunion shakes out. Although its the wifes side, i bet they would understand if i missed to ride motorcycles.. ::)

Might be interested as well. Easy to ride down and in regards to camping the best thing about Moab or UT and CO in general is there is a ton of free camping and we know a spot no one will regret. Miss the taste of moab sand in my breakfast burrito ;D
Title: Re: Moab anyone?
Post by: Sportfaller on January 14, 2011, 07:17:17 AM
I think the place I camped down there a while ago was called Goose Island or something like that. It was NE of town, just across the bridge and up river. A great little free camp site next to the river, with a beach. There used to be a spot down the road with an old chunk of drill pipe sticking out of a 300 ft cliff with spring water flowing out of it, best water I've ever has, about 40 degrees and straight out of the pipe. I hear they blocked it off over concerns about nitrates in the water. knowing what I feel like after riding all day, I think the moab KOA sounds pretty good, showers, pool and all.

Logistics.....logistics.........
I'd really like to make this trip people. However....Moab is about 900 miles/13 hours (via Denver) from Omaha.
I don't want to drive 13 hours by my lonesome. By the time I'd get to Utah, I'd be ready for a 2 day nap.
Does anyone have an idea how I can hook up with someone to make the trip? I'm really open to suggestion.
I have a solid pick-em-up truck and an awesome two (maybe three, depending on the bikes) trailer to add to the adventure.
Your thoughts are appreciated.................  ::)                                           Joni

for someone who has been there done that.

is it possible and how long would you plan on it taking to go from the Moab/Arches area to CanyonLands, to Glen Canyon maybe Halls Crossing, to Natural Bridges, to Blanding, to Monticello, to return to Moab/Arches?  Whew that made me tired typing it. My wife and I were there 2010 late May and Moab was very busy. Car rallys and such. Weather was great, coolish for at night so we motel/hotel and it was little pricey and very nearly couldn't find a room. I am not the very best at plan ahead = no reservations for me, check out the dates when you plan on being there for local events.

Get with Brian on a few routes you can take to make the trip that has lots of off road. He links up some trails near Laramie and I think rides mostly off road all the way to Steam boat. I know there are some hot springs pools around steam boat to relax in if you want to break up the trip.

OK, i am going to check the two campgrounds to see about any group rates. I need a little better count of who is going and if they need cabins or campsites. Please copy and past the below text with youself added in the appropriate line.

camping:  Jacin (1)

The dates shook out at May 12-16 (or whatever you can make) this gives us three full days to plan rides.
End of April didnt work due to one of Moabs biggest events on Easter week. Sorry to AgSpecialties, hope you still make it.

I will probably give this until around March 6, knowing that there will be changes in attendance from there. Hope we get a large group. If its anything like the Fall Rally, it will be a fun bunch.

Jacin -

I'm giving Moab a 70% chance of being a "GO".

The biggest sticking point is the following weekend - my daughter's graduation and all the associated fan-fare.  The flip side to this graduation is slap-in-the-face confirmation that I'm not getting any younger.

I would be camping and would likely trailer most of the way.

Been to Moab twice now, and would love to go back.  Catch for me is that I don't get much for time off.  There's a small chance (20%) that I could get the Friday off.  If that doesn't work out, would it be possible to meet up with you guys Friday night or Saturday morning to catch a few days? I would just trailer down either night right after work.

In the past I camped for free on BLM, but I don't mind other plans.

What trails are on the hit list?

They don't plow the paved highway over the mountains (Laramie to Saratoga) until May 30th, and even then the snow is well over the hieght of cars.  I will still be snowmobiling in May, and Laramie can get heavy snows through early June.  I'm not sure how much luck you'd have on the ellis jeep trail, or cameron pass that early.  The Roosevelt, or Medicine Bow forest offices could say.

I just bought a new Crewcab worktruck, so we could pile a few guys in and still leave room to pick up #2 in Laramie. I have a two or three bike trailer, plus the bed. I'll just have to ride more when I get there 8)

So far it looks like were are done to:
camping:  Jacin (1 +1 50% chance)  Mike (1) Waked 70% chance(1)
cabin:
RV site:

So with 4 partisipants,  i am not going to work on getting discounted rates. We will just plan when we get closer weather we want a good campground, or if we should rough it a few nights on BLM land. Mike, i have to pick up a friend in Denver, but if he bails i am still riding all the way.  Wacked, hope you make it. Otherwise I am going to wear that NDSU shirt and see if i can get arrested by the local Moab PD, then give them your name.....

Jacin and all, son David and I are planning on spending the week camping in the Moab area. Problem is it's 1200 miles from Fargo, so we well be heading back early on Saturday. Hopefully we can scout some trails and hook up for some riding Thursday and Friday. thinking about fixing my brakes so we can sneek up on you guys?

Mike, how much room will you have? i might try to get you to haul two bike for me to fill out your load. Detail, details. The other option is to let you ride and i will haul anyone and thier bike with my crew cab and trailer. Speak up, the end is near.

The Good and the Bad!

The Bad: Moab is not in the cards this year ....   My 70% chance just died.

The Good:  Well, there's a lot.  1) I won't be bashing up my "new to me" DRZ quite as early   2) My family is moving to Billings where there's a lot of great riding just out my back door.   3)  That means I'll make the DDSR at FNF this June and connect with many of you again!

The move to a different state means that May will find me home as Mister Mom and packing instead of taking in the intoxicating sites of Moab.

Sure hope there will be a MOAB II!

None of us are really too demanding, a garage with servicing capabilities, a beverage fridge, room for a tent in your yard. Did i mention how much i loved Montana after rdiding through to Canada last year? Meaybe we can make a trip there to help you unpack... ::)  Sorry youll miss Moab, well have to plan something again next year. This can be a trial run.

Sportfaller, i am still not sure. i need to take an extra bike for a friend coming from Denver to vist and ride. I need to call PlumberMike and see if he has room, or wants me to haulanything for him. I really want to have my Gs there, so i can have my friend move from my wifes ttr125 to my wr250. i dont think he has ridden since he was a kid, so i am REALLY trying to get him back into it. Whats your plan? i think riding would be a great time.

This is what i've got
camping:  Jacin (1 +1 Tony 70% chance)  Mike (1) Snooker (1)  Sportfaller ?%(1)
Should see Jerry and David when we get there.

5 guys? I had higher expectations. Did i pick the wrong weekend? I didnt get much feedback initially on the dates, but was baseing on the best tempuratures.

I'd probably ride, assuming I havent traded my 1200 for a 800GS by then.  The ride down is pretty awesome once you get to colorado, lots of options.  I'd hate for folks to pass up the technical trails because I'm only one down there riding a 800lb sow.

Sportfaller, i was thinking that if my friend  bales, we would have two GS, and two super sweet 650xmotos. Not sure what number two rides. I really would like to ride there and have the GS. I guess i dont need to get too technical, there are 1,000s of miles of stuff to ride on the bigger bikes. I also dont need to get hurt 800 miles from home, and then use my Medjet to get home. That might limit future trips. If i could get a trailer bult in time, i might haul the WR behind the GS. hhmmmm.
Number Two, glad you coming! I think its going to be awsome stuff.

I've got a XR650R.  It's got some sweet mods too: bent subframe, tweeked handguard, dented radiator.  I do have a larger tank though.  The stocker was good for 70 miles.  With the bigger one, I can make 200 or so - hopefully enough to keep up with you GS guys.

OK, so its down to Plumber Mike, Snooker, Number Two, and me. Sportfaller is a maybe. Mike and I are planning to ride out of the hills wednesday night the 11th. Route is still undetermined, but we would love for anyone who is able, to join us. Since we have our gear with us, we figure we can cowboy camp anywhere. The goal, is the journey. Real profound, isnt it?  If we can stop for the night somewhere in Wyoming, the trip to Moab on Thrusday should be sweet.  I will be on the 1100GS, Mike on his wild crossmoto, Snooker still the xmoto i assume, and Number two on his XR650. If we can talk Sportfaller into suupporting the DDSR Moab trip, he'll be on his brand spanking new 2011 800GS. I dont think there will be any super extreme hardcore dirt riding. Since we are all truly dualsporting, we dont need any helicopter, or destroyed bikes. Should be some great BLM roads, and National parks.   Come on I know there are more of you out there!!   Do you really want to miss out on this?

I do believe they are the same location. one from below, one from above. My goal is to ride them. And yes i think they are on the white rim trail. I took the photos from a ride report on advrider. Its less than 30 days away! :o  I am getting excited.   Plumber Mike andIi started hammering out travel plans yesterday. I have ditched the trailer for now. My friend will not be coming, so no need to take two bikes. I also have too many conflicting opinions about the reliability of the BMW with a trailer. Although ther is a thread on advrider specific to GS and trailers. So, for now i will continue to research it, but plan for a great ride out to Moab. We need to try to meet Jerry when we get there. He will already have been ther most of the week i think.  Jerry, can you send over some contact info? if you want some company when we get there.

I CANNOT afford to get hurt. I don't own a Medjet :D

I'm working on Snooker. He still want's the luxury of my new pickup. It's sooo comforting to have 6 cylinders,6 gears and 6 wheels everywhere we go 8).....but that's not adventure. I will give my wife a lesson in piloting it should an emergency arise. It's a basic duty of a stay at home mom ;D

I think that if we could hook up in or around Laramie earlyish(7-8?) that would be a great hook-up spot, which should make for a good day of backroads to get to Moab.

Still exicted ;D

Mike, thats good with me, its great to meet new people who ride. How about Snooker and NumberTwo?  Sportfaller? Any objections to outsider? Sportfaller, do we need to start picking on you to make a decision? We can push pretty hard you know. ;)    Also wanted make sure you three/four are ok with NOT making campground reservations. I think we should be able to drop in pretty much anywhere and get in with this size group. It also leave us able to camp anywhere we might end up. no schedules?  Cowboy camping in the desert if we like. Waking up under the stars, with no one around, next to your motorcycle. If you want me to reseve something let me know.

No objections.

I'm reading this as we are hauling camping gear on the bikes during the day, yes?.  Let me know - I'd need to get my subframe welded after a particular get-off I had last summer

Also, I must trailer down because my work schedule is forcing me to drive at night.  It will be some kind of trick to catch up with you guys after you're already in Moab, as I'll get there late Friday night.  Hopefully you can get a text out, or smoke signals or something.

Guys, son David and I are working out final details - ordering rock riding gear. We will have the motorhome and will bring extra water for showers. There is a BLM camp spot north and east of Moab on hwy 128 along/next to the Colorado river that I would like to stay at. Should be room for all to camp, if we can score the spot. Gerry...   (you're the Brad Lackey fan right? and quick with an earplug to fix a hole in a motor case, right? brilliant BTW...)   I remember meeting you - the same night I met Malcolm Smith !  So you are GOOD LUCK in my book!  So about camping on 128 just curious if you picked a campground - I don't know that area anymore but I know there are a lot of designated campgrounds there, right on the road.  See:  http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/recreation/campgrounds/highway_128.html (http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/recreation/campgrounds/highway_128.html).    Downside is that they are right on the road (car noise but not busy at night prolly) and IF the mosquitoes are recently hatched sometimes it is bad.  But I think the pluses outweigh it so I like it!  (Bring our own firewood or buy it in town).    My very first time to Moab we camped along there but it was wide open back then and we just rode our unlicensed dirt bikes to town and had a shower via a garden hose outside the Texaco station as there were no places that sold showers like they have now!  We used to call it the Moosehead Enduro ride as everybody brought a case of Moosehead.  Some of the macho cowboys in the group used to toss up their empties over the Colorado and shoot at 'em with their Smith & Wesson's.  (notice I said "at" 'em because nobody ever hit one in the air)... Green was "in" back then too (green glass IN the bottom of the river, that is)...  don't misunderstand me - I hate broken glass! and I protested a bit...   We rode the original Slickrock Bike Trail when Bike meant a motorbike and mountain bikes had not yet been invented... Ok it's been awhile....  (plumber mike was in 3rd grade I figure  :D    That trail always scared the crap out of me in places.  But I digress...

So I already sound like a frickin' mister thinks-he-knows-it-all and you guys are getting a bad impression of me (oops), but at the risk of pushing it further, I have this one tip for those of you that have never done it, you have to do it once...

Anybody headed to Moab in the daytime that is not in a super hurry, I suggest you take the Cisco exit off of I-70 and take the old, slow way in - probably full of cows and potholes but it the old 128 highway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_State_Route_128 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_State_Route_128)) and is a majestic route as you descend into the Colorado canyon the slow and quiet way. Probably cost you 20-30 minutes but a must if you are on a bike, go slow if in an RV as there is no shoulder probably.  They built a new concrete bridge to replace the one lane historic wooden Dewey Bridge and then the old one caught fire from a young kid camping and playing with fire and it burned down a couple of years ago.  When they built that bridge it was the longest suspension bridge west of the Mississippi.  It was a thing of beauty in it's day.   and I'll never forget seeing it in the headlight of my buddies' Land Cruiser the first time we went there - turned the corner and wow - one lane wide - so narrow we could barely open our car doors to get out and stare at the pitch black deserted night.  The next day we ditched my motorcycle trailer and then I rode my 74YamMX360 next to them for the next week.  Crap I digressed again (I just love Moab!)...

So..   After Dewey Bridge you just run along the Colorado (I highly suggest putting in a brand new CD from U2 called "The Joshua Tree" for this stretch...)  anyhow drive it past the awesome spires in Castle Valley, and you could take it all the way in to the main 191 highway just N. of Moab,  (but stop at your campsite first!).  Another good thing to know - where to find drinking water as there are not many places (besides bottled water at City Market or gas stations, or RV water at RV parks). One place is simple and free.. if you follow 128 until it ends at the main (busy) US highway 191 right at the river just north of Moab - well right at that junction near the pedestrian bridge is a water source.  I don't know if RV's can use it or not but I know there is drinking water there... handy.

Anybody want more tantalizing pictures?  hehehe...

I think this is the campground you are thinking of, I stayed there about 10 years ago, awesome sandy riverside camp, good shade, nice place.

If we want to day ride in the old uranium mines in paradox, C.O. they are about an hour east, and I have a place we can camp there or something on either end.

I've had a change of plans and will be driving the truck to Moab.....picking Snooker up along the way.

I was wondering how I'd get my cabana, generator, chili pepper lights, and portable kegerator on the bike with a 1/2 cord of wood, and still carry three quarts of oil on the bike (for Jerry and son, of course :-X)....the real reason will be revealed around the campfire ;D

I hope this dosen't screw anybody up...and could help should someone have a problem with a bike, get hurt, or other things which WILL NOT happen.

There's at least 6 along this area (see BLM link above) any will do, only a few will fit an RV according to the site.  That Google view makes the sandstone the color of the muddy Colorado! We all know it is much more beautiful than that!

Gerry if you decide something before departure (or after you arrive even) it would be nice to know where to look for you - what day do you arrive in camp?  Call one of us and we can post it or ?

Also, I am in the process of making a list trails for the two of us to ride before you get there so if anyone has any recommendations or wants us to scout something out before the rest of the group arrives let me know.

(Still waiting to hear if your Dad is the Brad Lackey fan...)  hehe..    Anyhow I do have some ideas for trails for you.  First I'd like to ask that you guys NOT ride the White Rim Trail and definitely leave that one for the entire group when we get there.  It will definitely work on a KLR650 or a GS bike easily.  Maybe also skip the 4x4 trails in that same general area like Gemini Bridges, and the road to Dead Horse State Park and we can all do them together.  On the other hand of course feel free to do as you choose!

A new are to scout:  There are some new-ish single track, mountain bike and ATV trails called the Sovereign Trail System, located north of Moab on the east side of 191 just N. of the 313 junction, starting at the Archview RV resort and gas station (the only gas station in the entire area north, east or west of Moab itself).   You have to be careful which sections you try - for example the Sovereign Single Track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZracnCycrs&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZracnCycrs&feature=related)) is WAY too hard for bigger dual sport bikes and is more for mtn bikes and hard core dirt bikes (never been on it personally).  I've been on some other sections and been told the Sovereign ATV loop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR4M3X1Dc7M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR4M3X1Dc7M)) is best for bigger dual sport/adventure bikes.  You should not do it without a map, I know there are maps at the Archview gas/store, I got one there.  It might be a cool area to check out as all the trails have recently been laid out (all on state land, not BLM) with specific types of usage in mind (like single track), unlike most roads and 4x4 trails that were originally just put there by uranium miners back in the day.

Other things to do:  Also there is an awesome short hike down into a canyon right there - just ride south of the ArchView store (on trails in the Sovereign area) to the main drainage that goes east, then go east along the sand wash and only about 1000' east of the highway it drops into a pouroff.  You can hike down into the canyon via a trail just a few hundred feet around on the south side of the canyon, the trail goes straight down the wall into the canyon floor (in the shade!).  A very accessible easy quick hike and you are totally isolated at the end of a canyon that eventually drains into Arches Nat'l Park a couple miles away.  Also a good evening, even moonlight hike and nobody goes there...  Another good hike is a tighter slot canyon called Negro Bill Canyon on 128 on the way to your campground on the Colorado river.

You should ride the asphalt through Arches Nat'l Park if you have never done it.  The Fiery Furnace tour is amazing - must sign up ahead of time (maybe even day before - it fills up early), it is such a maze that you have to have a ranger guide you or most people get lost (it is also shady as you are sandwiched between fins of rocks).  Also the ever popular Delicate Arch hike for sunset (cooler) or full moon even.

Sounds like Sportfaller just commited to the Moab trip!

Likewise, by posting in this thread after buying a new bike, the Yeti is default committed.

Also, I second waiting on white rim for the rest of us.  I'd really like to do that one.

Jacin, I got your message, I dont know if I can get the bike prepped in time, the 11th isnt very far away! I'm hunting down some of the remaining additions, but dont know if the funds will be available to fill out my needs list.

I need the following:
build tool tube
tire kit (tube tires now)
tubes
tires (bike came with street tires  ???)
tank bag
waterproof duffel
GPS (maybe)
lots of other stuff.....

Disclaimer: I'm talking the "local day ride" portion of the adventure, not touring and camping:

Jacin is right, you don't need much to get your bike ready.  Non-street tires are very helpful though, but full on knobbies are not mandatory, at least something with a decent tread similar to a Mefo or Heidenau will work great. Yeah ok spare tube(s), tools and a duffel (small, or a pack with water for day rides) but the rest you could rely on others for if you had to.  Though I just bought a GPS (60CSx) for an organized ride where they downloaded the waypoints to follow, I've never used one in Moab, what you really need (still) is a good map, which you can buy there at any mtn bike shop.  Starting down the GPS knowledge path is a giant time sync too, either looking for free topo maps online or learning the unit, I'm not sure how many of these side roads / 4x4 roads will show up on a GPS anyhow (YMMV).  So I'd say bag the GPS unless you are already up to speed on it - and save this energy for things that are a must!

Not to pretend to know more than others, but for tubes...  I subscribe to the theory of having the shop instal the fattest fricking tube I can find (Bridgestone Ultra Heavy Duty 4mm thick tube) then ride carefully enough and with enough pressure say 25+ (I don't deflate for off road, and Moab has plenty of hard edges it is not just sand anyhow) and HOPE I don't get a flat, cuz it's not a skill I've ever done successfully, even at home, maybe it's time to retry it.  These fat tubes are difficult to work with (I've been told), and though I have a lot of years off road but sadly not a lot of miles... but so far so good.

p.s. I just installed a tool tube from the AdvRider guy at TheToolTube.com who ships FAST.  They are cheap and will save you a lot of time making your own like I tried, but couldn't mount my homemade one reliably in my case.

All someone has to say to me is...  Life is Short...   and Moab...    and man you gotta go - there's no place like Moab and SE Utah!

Maps, trails, gas...

I found a cool website for Moab trails, of course it is mountain bike oriented and will not explain which trails may have that ONE impassible obstacle for a dual sport pig that you would just simply carry your mtn bike over or around.  But it will give you a sense of where the various trails are you will hear people talk about:

http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/idx-moab.htm (http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/idx-moab.htm)

Maps - you need a decent one for mtn bike trails and even for 4x4 roads it is a good idea...  Unless things have changed recently, the best ones are either Latitude 40 (they make Moab East and Moab West) or the Trails Illustrated (now National Geographic own them? and they make Moab North and Moab South).

Gas - Outside of Moab itself, the only place I know of is about 12 miles north of Moab on US Hwy 191.  For the White Rim trail day, I plan on gassing up here and it is about 120-130 mile loop from there and back to the same gas station.  If you can go that far you should be ok, but I plan on taking a 1 gal can up to the top and leaving it where we take off on the side dirt road (actually where the Mineral Bottom road comes back up to the paved 313 road, topping it off and leaving the rest.   Our G650X bikes have small tanks.

I think there are enough of us that we could walk/move/carry big bikes over a difficult obstacle if we really had to.  Many hands and all.  We do it with snowmachines all the time [500lbs].

White Rim on Saturday?

Don't skimp on water.  We drank 2 gallons per day each last time I was out - wasn't even all that hot.

...got my bar risers in the mail today - Moab is coming woohoo!

Ok guys, I'll bite. I'm in. Installed the wolfman bags today, broke out the old dry bags (who needs a fancy dry duffel), and ordered a few more parts, ordering tires mon.

Few questions:
Jacin, you are leaving the 11th? After work? I have to teach a CPR class here in Hill City till about 4, so I'll be able to leave from here after that.

Are we all riding? or is there a 4-wheel-pack-mule leaving RC? I was mainly wondering about coolers and the big camp stove, for better camp accommodations. are we camp cooking or dining out?

Is there a list of things that some of us have, that we dont need duplicates of? I have a water purifier and a decent medical kit, what else?

What are the route plans? are be back-roading or slabbing it?

My Aunt lives in Paradox C.O. an hour west of moab. she has offered her yard for camping, and there is some very scenic rides through CO, maybe for the way back?

Should we all sit down for some beers with our maps in the next week or so?

Oh yeah, and my C.F.O. has put a no net expenditures clause on my trip, anyone in the market for a new rifle? I have one for sale.

YES! glad you in Sportfaller.  I think Mike has bailed on riding as he is taking his truck. So, it would be you and i leaving wednesday. Time doesnt matter to me, just want to get on the raod. We can camp wherever we get tired. I was thinking of secondary roads though Larimie, and northern Colorado.  I would guess that Mike would haul some items if you asked real nice. Athough i would be gentle with the ribbing about not riding. ;D
It's ok Mike, there will be lots of riding when we get there.
I am out of town until thursday this week, but would make time to get together for a little planning.  Any ideas?
Number Two, when do you think you'll get in to Moab?

awesome. I've got a nice big coleman 2 burner stove and light package that hooks to a standard propane tank, it would be plenty big for everyone to cook on (if we are cooking), and various other larger camping items if need be.

I'll be around Friday night and most of the weekend, so I'm open too

We coming back mon? or when?

I wouldnt mind trailering down a bike like a lil girl and riding back on my own or taking KTM or beemer down and back on a trailer.

I think someone on here has me confused with someone else who needs some stuff.

I love Moab and its a magical spot 4 me.

Flex, I think Jacin and I are leaving the 11th, around 4ish, possibly from Hill City, and riding as far as we feel like that night, and the rest of the way Thursday. There are a couple guys (or at least Mike) trailering or trucking. sounds like we are camping on the beach along the colorado down there. dont know what day for sure we are coming back.

I think you should join us!

Josh, was thinking about hitting Larimie, but other than that, the route is the same. I am ok with any route. As long as we ride. I planned on a long hard day back Monday, but have already prepped my wife and work for a Tuesday return. It might be a little cold crossing up near Walden/Steamboat/Craig but i am up for it as long as the roads are dry. Its already going to be 80's in Moab, so think about the destination. Flex, call Mike and see if you can haul with him. But if you want, you are welcome to ride with Josh and I. As he said, we will ride until we feel its too cold, or we are too tired.
We could plan to meet at the Sugar Shack friday for planning. I think that would be the most central location for everyone.

Just a heads up as the northern mountains in Colorado had huge snow this year and in particular the Yampa River valley area around Steamboat is expecting record flooding this year.  It hasn't been warm for the last 3 weeks but this week IS warming up majorly so expect flooding - you should call ahead before expecting to get through there or you might be surprised...

http://www.9news.com/news/article/195478/339/Steamboat-Springs-braces-for-heavy-spring-floods- (http://www.9news.com/news/article/195478/339/Steamboat-Springs-braces-for-heavy-spring-floods-)

As for cooking...  Mike and I talked and we are aligned on maximizing our riding time, meaning going into Moab for dinner (and showers are available too).  Then campfires after dinner.  Mike is bringing wood that should be enough for a group "social" campfire each night.  Breakfast either a simple cold one in camp, or stop at the Moab Diner for a basic fast and cheap hearty breakfast (and a classic simple old school place for dinner too, at least for starters).   This plan makes not only the cook gear but the coolers look a lot smaller too.    I don't want to overstep my bounds as a guest of DDSR and would not assume to propose this for everybody but I think at least Mike and I are into minimal cooking and cleanup and more time for riding that way.   Pack your own lunch as most rides do not have a place to buy lunch.   This also leaves more time for optional cool things to do in the evening like short hikes (Delicate Arch for sunset, etc).

We will also bring a couple of 5 gal water jugs for drinking that we can refill as needed for use around camp.   You can always refill your (gallon) size CamelBack each morning at the free water source at the footpath at the bridge on 191 over the Colorado River.  I think it's fair to say most of these campsites do not have water, depending on which one they pick for us.

If you guys make it to Laramie, look me up [PM@ jacin theis].  Maybe have a burger with you and swap phone numbers and such.

I can meet anytime friday at the sugar shack, you guys call it. Josh, i would like to avoid all interstate (required near Moab)  and do as much two lane as possible. For the sake of time, we can avoid gravel, but i will ride whatever you want. I have my knobbies mounted, so we can ride whatever comes up. I might haul a set of more road type tires as a backup though.

I just need to know if I need to meet up with anyone before Wed afternoon to pick up gear/person/bike. Otherwise my plan is to leave Wed afternoon and head for Snooker Lake in Loveland Co to camp for the eve. Thursday morning departure for Moab, so should be able to ride a little thursday afternoon when we roll in.

If you want to meet at the Sugar Shack this afternoon, call my cell @ 591-2912. Leave a message and I'll call you back.

David..    Anybody heard from David yet as to which BLM campsite along the Colorado River we are meeting at?

I've been scouting some rides out and found some GPS tracks for my GPS so that'll be a first if that works out.  Trying to find stuff appropriate for "adventure" bikes not dirt bikes with a brake light switch thrown on the rear brake lever... trails that won't have any gnarly spots for the first day (Friday) as we don't want breakage right out of the chute.   White Rim (WRT) I think you guys want to do on Saturday.

So what's the plan out there on logistics?  Time for some chatter!   I'm bringing a couple extra "Crazy Creek" canoe style seats for campfire usage for you guys that are riding out and don't have room.

Is it only Mike and I that have marginal gas tanks for making it 120-140 miles on the WRT loop?  curious.

Matt, i have Jerry's (david's dad) number. Thought we would call when we get there or we should be able to find the Mercedes motorhome. White Rim on Saturday so we can have Number 2 join us. I have a small Touratech fuel can (2 quarts?). Can you or Mike bring a small can we can haul for you on the White Rim?
Josh and i are planning to meet and stay with Number 2 on Wednesday night. I am up for anything as far as riding. I wouldn't mind a little hard stuff. It would be fun to see how well we can work together to get everyone through. Although i am not looking to test my limits nessasarily.  ;D  I am also fine with a stop each morning at MceeDs for a nutrition packed Big Breakfast. Or whatever. Bathing in the River? Showers in town? fine by me. I plan to be the most flexable person in camp. Gad you coming Matt, it will be fun to ride with you again.

We got a later start since we spent Saturday setting up a  DRZ-400 I bought myself last weekend. :) Put a bigger gas tank, skid plate, and bark busters on. We got on the road yesterday and made it to Rifle, CO. We are now about an hour outside of Moab and I will update the thread when we find a campsite. We are going to load up "The Joshua Tree" for the drive to the campsite.

Matt- I picked up a 1.5 gallon Rotopax at Cabela's yesterday and also have a non-spillproof ???1 gallon container we could stash if it's a loop. We will be fine. I'm also bringing 2 five gallon containers for refueling at camp.

I'm hoping to be as flexible as Jacin.....unless it means less riding >:( ;D

I'm hoping to camp at Beach Snook wed night, but have not confirmed reservations with the campground host.
Since it will just be the two of us in the truck(It's not too late Flex), I'm thinking I'm NOT going to bring a trailer....that would leave room for only one broken bike on the return trip if need be...but since there won't be any of that, i guess it's a moot point.
Is there anything else we need?want?
Title: Re: Moab anyone?
Post by: Sportfaller on May 09, 2011, 05:05:08 PM
I'm bringing my rotopax too, so there's another 1.5 gallons. my bike has a 200 mile range, the white rim trail is about 180 miles moab to moab, so a little extra fuel doesnt hurt.

Rode about 100 miles of dirt sunday trying to get used to the new bike, I hope to hell my risers get here before weds. or I may be needing a chiropractor and/or masseuse after each day, standing is a killer. maybe the risers off my old mans 1200 will fit?

this trip is going to rock!

Just got back from our afternoon ride and thought I should post an update about where we are camping.

We are currently camping along the Colorado River about 9 miles outside of Moab at the Big Bend campground. We were able to snag two connecting sites and there should be room for 5+ tents in the sites. Here is a teaser photo of the site looking towards the camper from the river.

That said we only registered the sites for one night, but can keep them if we pay by noon tomorrow. When we were out riding we noticed a large single site that could potentially hold just as many people at the Goose Island campground. It is currently occupied, but looked like it might be opening up tomorrow. If it does we will try to snag it since it would put us 7 miles closer to town and most of the trails.

Just so we can try to make sure there will be room for everyone when they get here how many riders are there going to be and is any one besides plumber mike bringing a vehicle other than a motorcycle? If our numbers are small enough we will do our best to find a site or sites that can fit everyone.

We will keep you posted if we decide to move closer to Moab tomorrow.

David, thanks for that update. (Joshua Tree - really???  8)  Did you FEEL the vibe?)  We'll find you at either Big Bend or Goose Island, don't worry about updating us - just go ride!  Sounds like we have 3 riding out, plus 2 in Mike's truck plus you 2.  I have another buddy who may be coming with Mike and me but only with his mountain bike. He won't cause any trouble and is bringing a coffee pot and single burner stove for it (if he comes-will know tomorrow).

I've been checking out another set of rather newly made rare SINGLETRACK trails very close to you up 191 just north of the Arches entrance, called the Moab Brand Trails (http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/brand-trails.htm (http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/brand-trails.htm)) which includes easy loops called Bar M and Lazy EZ, and more difficult side loops.  It is hard to find any singletrack and this was recently made (just south of the Sovereign trail complex).

Jacin good to hear from you, have a safe ride out there you guys.  I'll bring my own 1 gal jug and stash it for the WRT day but other than that I don't plan on any days longer than 120 miles between gassing up, which should be ok since we are camped so close to town.  Excited to ride with you and all the DDSR guys again - thanks for letting me tag-along!

Mike and I are planning on a ride when we make camp in late afternoon Thurs, something short and easy like Klondike Bluffs and/or the Moab Brand Trails or parts of Sovereign ATV. Or Potash Rd then up Long canyon to Dead Horse Point for the view. dunno. so many choices so little time!

David, i will also have two guys coming on from Denver, but only to mountian bike. (why no motor?)  ::)
If there is not room though, i am sure they can throw out  their tents at any number of other locals. Thanks for doing all the recon for us late bloomers.

good point Mike        while cleaning out my tankbag this winter    I discovered a dial air pressure gauge     one of several things found on pilots knob trail last fall     I'll bring it along in june                 as far as 2 suzukis goes  you will notice one has the oversize  KLR  style tank while the other  (gerrys) does not         I see a father vs son farkle race developing        too bad for the fixed income  senior citizen

After a frantic night of working on the bike, reworking my packing, obsessing over my riding gear, I was about to bail, thinking neither the bike nor I were ready.  After a few hours of quality sleep, I decided screw it.

What better shakedown than moab?  Work sucks, lets ride!

2 inches of snow on the ground this morning in Laramie, and a 90% chance of more rain/snow in the next 24hrs.

Be ware   :evil

weather in Moab looks to be superb, however.

AWESOME trip with you guys...  hope to come to your fall rally too.  I'll leave the rest of the details to others to post!  Maybe I'll post a pic or 2 later...

A special thanks to Jerry and David for the meal and the shadiest campsite in all of Moab!   (can one of you email me that pic you took of my wheelie please?  <matt AT mattsnook DOT com> )

cheers, -matt
