Time to get rolling!

The 2011 Dakota Dual Sport Riders summer rally will once again be held in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!  Camping will be at the Fish 'n Fry campground just south of Deadwood, SD: http://www.fishnfry.com/

Location is here:

We will be staying on the Hillside Loop once again.

Dates are June 16, 17, 18 & 19, 2011.  You can arrive anytime after noon on Thursday, June 16, departing on Sunday, June 19. Weather should be dry and warm - avg high 78, avg low 52.  BUT, this is South Dakota...if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  ;-)  Be aware that there is very spotty cell phone coverage at the campground (can be a good thing), but if you ride to the top of the hill (2 minutes away) most will get a good signal.

Entry Fee: FREE!
Camping: Tents - $7 per person/night, RVs/Campers - $20 per night.  You will pay the campground when you arrive, no pre-payment required. Make sure you tell them you are with DDSR to get the special discount!

We will have enough room for plenty of tents.  RV sites near the tent sites are at a premium and need to be reserved as far in advance as possible, although there will be plenty of RV spots available away from "ground zero".

The rally is open to any and all skill levels of riders with any motorcycle that is street legal in SD (doesn't take much: headlight, taillight & license plate is about it).  All attempts will be made to keep the amount of pavement on our rides to a minimum, but it is a necessary evil in the Black Hills to get from one trail to another sometimes.

Rides can range from gravel/easy fire roads to rocks to single track to really gnarly rocks & single track, hillclimbs, etc.  There will be something for everybody!

The Fish 'n Fry campground (FnF) has full showers (coin operated, bring a couple of quarters if you don't want to smell like a dirty biker!), real bathrooms (with sinks & mirrors!), a general store (with beer), a small restaurant (with beer on tap!) and a grill and shelter we can use if it rains. 24hr gas station/convenience store right across the street, and Deadwood is only 10 minutes away. There are picnic tables, but if you want a guaranteed seat by the fire you better bring your own.

Electricity is available to charge cell phones, iPods, etc., however it is outside, so use at your own risk!

Firewood from outside the campground is not permitted (sometimes an exception is made for us DDSR folks, though). The FnF has bundles of wood for around $4, I think.

Limited food will be provided, but plan on fending for yourself during the day.
- One night will be chili & nachos (courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Yeti)
- More to come, I'm sure!

Cars, trucks & bike trailers will have room to park, but could be a ways away from your campsite.

Copy and paste the below form to sign up:

RIDES

DIFFICULTY RATING KEY
Class I - Requires 1-2 hours
Class II - Requires half a day
Class III - Requires most of a day
Class IV - Requires a very long day
Class V - Requires an overnight stay on the route
Class VI - Requires a few days
Class VII - Expedition

Grade A is graded dirt road
Grade B is easy jeep road
Grade C is moderate
Grade D is occasionally technical
Grade E is continuously technical
Grade F is gonzo

Camp 5 Road
Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade D

MAP
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=deadwood+sd&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.315864,56.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Deadwood,+Lawrence,+South+Dakota&ll=44.364606,-103.600044&spn=0.063938,0.110378&z=13

DESCRIPTION
Rocky stream beds, some smooth access road, some rocky access road, grapefruit to cantaloupe sized loose rocks, two semi-gnarly hillclimbs, rocky steps, tight two-track in places, fast two-track in places, all tons-o-fun!

TIME
1hr - 2hr ride, depending on your skill/risk-taking level. We took 2.5hrs during one rally with lots of larger, adventure type bikes and some inexperienced riders (such as myself  :P ). Some have claimed to have run it in less than 15 minutes.    :o

PICS

PILOT KNOB
Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade D (although one .5 mile section is Grade E)

MAP
(http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn213/Promo_Yeti/Misc/PilotKnobMap.jpg?t=1273622627)

DESCRIPTION
The only portion of the Centennial Trail that is open to motorized travel (from Pilot Knob TH to Dalton TH). Starts off easy, from either the south or north end.  North end offers a really fun ATV trail with lots of whoops & banks.  South end starts off with a short switchback uphill followed by some easy two track and rock strewn two-track...with awesome scenery!  It's the middle bit that will get ya!  Sometimes steep, rocky, narrow single track with some difficult steps, climbs and descents. Not all that bad, but can be challenging even on smaller bikes.  But, keep in mind that flexlarson took some poor guy on a VStrom over Pilot Knob and the guy is still alive, his bike had a few broken bits.   ;D  So, it can't be all that bad!

TIME
1hr - 1.5hr

PICS

This bit will rattle your teeth out if you're suspension is too stiff!  On the south end (I think):

It tends to stay a little wetter up there because the forest is so thick:

Sorry, I don't have any pics of the tuff stuff, you'll have to take my word for it.

249 from Silver City/Slate Creek Dam/The 429
Difficulty Rating - Class I, Grade C (although I suppose the 429 could be considered D)

Can anyone confirm that The 429 is no longer accessible due to the new map? I'm pretty sure it's not.  EDIT: Yup, the green (best) portion of The 429 below is now closed.  :(

MAP
(Traveling from east to west)

DESCRIPTION
A beautiful (mostly) easy ride on smooth fire roads (= fast!). This is one of my favorite easy rides for some great scenery! The most challenging part is the green section of the 429, but I've been through it with a GSA that had no problems at all.  Just gets a little tight & wet at times. Kind of a long section of gravel on the 231.1 stretch, otherwise, all dirt.

TIME
1.5hr - 2hr

Sorry, I'm kinda lazy...so, most of the above is just copied & pasted from previous rallies.  If anyone has anything new to add to the RIDES post, let me know!

Can't wait to see you all again!  I'm still very apprehensive about riding anything too challenging.  I may be taking it very easy this time around - please don't hold it against me!   ;D

I haven't even been out on the bike since last November...my attitude may change once I get a few rides under my belt this spring!   :evil

Count me in!!!!!!!!! I just booked the "Sitting Bull" room for the 16th, 17th and 18th.  ;D  Driving back to Omaha on the 19th.
In case some of you don't like sleeping on the ground like me, these are neat "smallish" rooms ($35/night) that sleep 2-3 with a main bathroom down the hall. I think it's a pretty good deal!
Can't wait to see all you neat folks and do some ridin'. I'll bring the Tylenol      ;)                    Joni

P.S. Jeff is coming out with me but he won't be riding.   ::)

I'm no mx racer, but I had fun on some of the more challenging trails. If there is anyone else who just likes fire roads, gravel roads, etc., that is what my wife enjoys, so we take a lot of easy rides as well. Would love to have some company!

I'm fairly new to this dual-sport thing so I'm happy on the easy stuff.  I might be up for a moderately challenging ride too for a change of pace.  I wouldn't normally say that, but a buddy who's an experienced hare-scrambles racer took me out to the Big Horns a couple years ago and got me way out my comfort zone (whether I liked it or not) and somehow I didn't crash or injure myself which did give me some confidence in my ability.  But I'd never claim to be a 'great' or even good, off-road rider.  My buddy, Dave, will be joining us too, and he's happy with the two-track and gravel stuff too.  I'm sure that whatever rides we go on, it'll be a good time.   ;)

Seems like the majority of our group is now in the "prefer it easier" crowd as opposed to the "prefer it crazier" crowd (you know who you are!  :evil ). This is just fine by me!  I think I may have got most of the desire to get crazy on my bike out of my system the last couple of seasons...notice I said "most".   ;) :evil

Hey Brett - you got some routes planned out yet?  I may just follow you guys around on the easy stuff...you seem to know the trails around here better than anyone else I know! Josh is a very close second.

I still crave (and ride) the crazy stuff but I usually hit those trails early in the morning before my sister and dad roll out of their tents.  Another reason that I like F&F is because that fun little loop past Galena is close by (if it's still open).  I can get my adrenaline rush filled early in the morning and happily tootle around the rest of the day.

Don't have any detailed routes planned.  I'm curious to see what trails are closed now with the new travel management plan.  I've got a simple GPS and old NFS maps so I may not know where I'm going but at least I can get back to camp.  Brian and Chad know routes much better than I, and they know the FUN ones.

I'd really like to take a long loop down towards Mt. Rushmore and see it from a dirt trail.  I've heard some climbers say that such a trail exists but haven't seen it myself.  I know trails pretty well by Silver City and Slate Creek Dam, so we could certainly head over that way again this year too.  Last year we rode to Devil's Tower which is a long ways but also really cool for those who haven't seen it.

I was going to wait and just pick up a trail sticker and new map in Spearfish once I get out there but maybe I'll get them coming now so I can do a little research.

I also want to eventually hit every one of the motorcycle only singletrack trails now listed on the trail map.

As usual, I'm up for anything!

-Bret

According to the new maps, you can't get to Camp 5 from Galena anymore.

You can download the new maps here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPwhQoY6BdkOyoCAPkATlA!/?ss=110203&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSE_003853&navid=091000000000000&pnavid=null&position=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&ttype=main&pname=Black%2520Hills%2520National%2520Forest-%2520Home/maps/ (http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPwhQoY6BdkOyoCAPkATlA!/?ss=110203&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSE_003853&navid=091000000000000&pnavid=null&position=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&ttype=main&pname=Black%2520Hills%2520National%2520Forest-%2520Home/maps/)

The link seems to be broken right at the moment though.  I downloaded them last night.  If you have a Garmin GPS, there's a map you can download for that too.  The best section of The 429 is closed as well.  ???

I've been on a few dirt tracks around Mt. Rushmore, but none that you could see the mountain from. That would be cool to find.

Lonesome Dave emailed me with a fun sounding loop starting in Beulah WY that I'd be willing to try.  I'd also like to try to get down south a bit.

I'm going to try to make it down on Thursday.

I will likely be leaving on Sunday.

Are you riding out solo?  Coming through Watertown?

I did sell my '83 XL600.  I kept my'85 XL as my farm bike. I couldn't be with out one, they're a great bike.  I've even got a backup motor in case anything bad happens.
I think that I'll be coming from NE North Dakota so I'll probably be going through Bismarck/Mandan area.  I haven't really visited with any of the other folks that came from the MPLS area last year so I don't know if there will be anyone coming through Watertown.

Hank,
The way it looks now I will be riding out of Mitchell on the 16th. Not sure what route you will take but if you come by Mitchell we could meet up or if you a route a little to the north I could meet you a little north. Never been out to the Hills on anything north of I90. I'm pretty flexible. I tend to stop and enjoy the scenery and shot pics, so be forewarned. :D

the Maydew caravan will probably take 44 the whole way out as it is peaceful, zero traffic and goes thru the back side of the badlands.  Will hopefully leave from Platte, SD on friday before noon.  Anyone is welcome to join up with us (hank, gb, foster).  It is a fun road.

I thought about heading that way too. I'd join you but I was thinking about heading out Thursday. Maybe I'll change my plans. I'd like to ride with others.

beth and i rode out in sept and it was a great ride.  there are several whatifs that could throw a wrench, but that is the plan i'm shooting for.  so it would be 3 klr650's (pop, bro & wife, me) and beth on her klx250.  At the very least i can almost guarantee that beth and i will ride out friday before noon.

i assume you are riding your dr400 hank?

Assuming the stars align and I actually make it, yes I'll be riding the DRZ.    I might just bust out solo as swinging down that far south is quite a few extra miles (and the DRZ isn't my idea of an awesome highway ride) but that plan is also subject to change.

So, to summarize, I'm not 100% sure I'm coming and I don't know which route I'll take.   :)

I ordered my trail permit and map last week.  It just arrived in the post today.
I like the new maps.  They seem a lot easier to read.  They only sent me the map for the North half but it should suffice since that's primarily where we stayed last year.
I'm set to go.

Will there be anyone there if I arrive on the 16th. I'm thinking I want to just take my time and go out on Thursday. That way I may get first dibs on a prime camping spot. ;D ;D ;D
That way I could have all day Friday for riding with whoever will be there.

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout!  Up to 23 confirmed attendees!   ;D

Hey NDave, can you let me know how many tent and RV sites you will need, along with the size of each RV? Thanks!

Unless of course you are coming way early and are booking your own sites.

Personally, I'm still on the fence as to what bike to bring - spent a couple hours on some fire roads 2-up on Sunday...not really too impressed with the dirt-worthy-ness of the GSA (2up at least).  (Keep in mind, my other bike is a WRR.   ;) )  Don't think the wife was really into the dirt either, but I could be wrong.

Might just need some suspension adjustments...haven't got into that yet!

Yeti, this is a conundrum. The GS might keep you at speeds more in my category (self preservation motive, Super-ego), but the WR could represent confronting your fears and claiming your "dark side" or Id. What would Freud do? Smoke another cigar.

Yes, Camp 5 will be open....no, you will not be seeing The Yeti in Camp 5 this time around.  Still a little bit of shell shock from last June, and I'm bringing the GS - plan on staying on relatively smooth fire roads, mostly two-up.

EDIT: You can't get to Camp 5 through Galena anymore though - sucks, 'cause that was an awesome water crossing!  :(

Didn't know it was Camp 5 that brought your weekend to an end.
I can't say as I blame you. Maybe I'm thinking of another trail.
I went up over the Hill past Vinegar Hill Cemetery. Lots of logging up in that area last fall. Lots of up and down and pretty decent road actually but tight in places. Plenty of room for skidders though. Do I have the wrong road?

so that road past galena is closed before the first water crossing, or is it closed somewhere farther down the trail before camp 5.  have yet to get my map, sorry for the dumb questions, i just can't see how they would have closed that trail as it was big and wide enough to drive a bus down.

Is that the december version of the map? if not it is not correct, call the FS for the new version. Mine is at the office but I will take a look in the morning. Just because it isn't part of the trail system doesn't always mean it's not still a road, the whole thing is confusing as hell and even the FS can't expalin it??

I grew up in Bismarck, ND. I've lived in Minneapolis, MN for 8 years now. Started riding motorcycles only a few years ago... 2007 I think??? Got into it fast though. Love it. Had a 2007 KLR650, then a 2008 KLR650.... I now have a 2009 BMW F800GS and a 2010 BMW G450X. More than likely I will be trailering out with my G450X since it is a serious enduro/off-road machine and I'd like to explore some single track in the Black Hills. I can't wait!

for those purchasing trail use tags once you get to the hills...

Most of the forest service places close at 5pm on Friday (Spearfish).  The one in Rapid is open on Saturday but the one near Pactola is open 7 days a week.  So if you don't get your tags by 5pm on Friday and don't want to ride to Rapid, Pactola is not terribly far away and it's a fun ride, on dirt or pavement.

FYI.

I'm wondering the same thing. Thought I'd read that the permit must be mounted where "visible when riding" but I can't find that web page now. I feel like mounting it on the bottom of the skid plate but that probably won't fly.

I happen to talk with hayduke.klr07 several weeks ago. (works for the forest service) He mounted it on the left side so it could be seen as you passed another rider on the trail, mainly the "trail police".  So that's where I mounted mine.  However, I'm not going to stick that big ugly over-sized orange sticker on my scooter.  So I cut a circle out of the middle with all the info on it and stuck it on the side.  Still don't like it, but its smaller!

Probably not the right place to post this (sorry guys), but I just bought a Garmin 62cs but have discovered the installed map a little short of useless. There is a topographical map, or a street map upgrade available. Any idea if the topographical is that much better on the trails, or is it better to just get the upgraded street map?

GPS Maps (http://prdp2fs.ess.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPyhQoYAOUjMeXDfODy-HWHg-zDrx8kb4ADOBro-3nk56bqF-RGGGSZOCoCAPi8eX8!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS9ZQnZ3LzZfMjAwMDAwMDBBODBPSEhWTjJNMDAwMDAwMDA!/?navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=stelprdb5292977&navid=360000000000000&pnavid=null&ss=110203&position=Not%20Yet%20Determined.Html&ttype=detail&pname=Black%20Hills%20National%20Forest-%20Maps)

I haven't used the Garmin Topo maps. I have City Navigator and that probably has about 50% of the forest service roads and none of the trails. Although, Camp 5 is listed, which I find hilarious. Camp 5 does not belong on a street map.  :o

Topo is only useful for hiking IMO...way too much info (that you don't need) for riding trails, plus slow to draw.  City Nav has had just about every trail I've ridden in the hills.  There are a few missing, but pretty much all the fire roads are included in City Nav.

The MVU maps seem to have all the trails, but are very confusing to read (at least for me  ??? ). I have it on a separate micro SD card so I can swap between the MVU map and City Nav. Will be giving it the first real test during the rally...I haven't ridden much off road yet this season.

On most Garmin GPS's I think you can toggle different maps on/off. I have the 60Cx; just hit Menu button on the map page, then select Setup Map, and you can select which maps you want displayed (or all of them at once). So I put City Nav and MVU on the same micro SD card.

Not on mine - 60CSX.  It can only handle one map at a time. Kinda sux, my old Etrex could hold multiple maps though.

I don't have a 'Motorized Trail Permit' for the 'TR' trails yet. Can I buy one on site? If not, where and when can one be purchased?

I know I could order one online, but I don't think it will get to me in time and I don't want to pay $25 to overnight it to MPLS.

If I do not get one, will I not be able to ride where everyone else is? Will I be screwed?

My bike is MN plated with a MN DNR Off Highway Motorcycle Permit. Headlight, tail light, mirror.

Thanks.

you will want to buy one.  don't pay to have it overnight shipped.

for those purchasing trail use tags once you get to the hills...

FYI.

I put my hideous orange billboard (trail license) on my DRZ tonight.   Yuck!
Fortunately I'll cover it with mud ASAP.

I'm sorry to announce that I wont be up there at all this weekend after all. My bike is still resting on pieces in the garage and my fiance will be home for the first time in a month.  There is an open house at the Fire Department in Hill City on saturday, If you guys are riding by at lunch time stop in and get a hotdog or hamburger!

In a little over 24hrs from now, myself and 14 other riders will be at the rally!  Getting real excited now!

BTW, had some issues with my trailer and my GS, so I'm bringing my WRR. :evil

The wife and I cooked up a sh*t-load of chili, and it'll be heated up and ready for dinner on Thursday along with some nachos!  :eat  From past experience, there'll most likely be some leftovers for Friday as well.

See ya tomorrow!

Rally is tomorrow and I have yet to hear from some of the founding DDSR members - fringefan, flexlarson and littlejacket in particular.  Anyone know what's going on with those guys??

Hope I can sleep tonight.  ;D
