Title: 2012 BLACK HILLS MOTORCYCLE SHOW OFFICIAL THREAD
Post by: Sportfaller on January 24, 2012, 07:43:31 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, The time has come to show off our bikes in a sea of chrome and metal flake, fat tires and ape hangers.

Thats right! DDSR at the Black Hills motorcycle show, April 14th and 15th at the Rushmore Plaza civic center.  I've talked to Clay, the organizer from Black Hills Harley, and they are excited to have us there, and they even added a judged class just for dual sports.

I figures we could get all the DDSR folks together in a group area and really make a nice display, complete with a few tents, a fake camp fire, and our bikes.  I've attached the entry form, which needs to be completed and returned with the entry fee ($30 if you want your bike judged & the T-shirt) by MARCH 17.  I have marked DDSR on the entry form so we can all be placed together.  I plan on having a banner made, maybe with the logo I made a couple years ago.

Jacin and I were debating weather clean or dirty bikes, loaded down with everything for a long trip or stripped for trail use, and just how to best show off our rides.

SO.... If you are interested, please reply with your name, number and type of bike, and any ideas you have for our display. I'll start an official list below:

1. Josh Van Vlack (AKA Sportfaller) - 2011 BMW F800GS

Are you guys going to wear your pressure suits to the show? The chicks might dig it. Or they might think it looks stupid. Probably the latter.

My pressure suit has a kidney belt that wraps around the front. You can cinch it tight and hide your gut, works great for public appearances.

I think you guys are going to have too much fun, and be way too popular. Might get carried away and let some undesirables in. Maybe we should start selling t-shirts (spokesmodels)?

Hey, count me in I'll help in whatever way.  I don't know how much space we have to work with, but my 07 KLR with pelican cases and a few farkles is available.  Also my (new to me) WR250R is still all pretty and shiny (1100 miles).  It doesn't matter to me if any of my bikes are used or not, and I don't care about the contest.  No matter what types of bikes we include, I think we should have a couple of smaller ones maybe even a TW200.  Also, if your doing the camping scene, I have a little Honda CRF 50 with training wheels (so it won't tip over on kids, they can just sit on it).

No matter what we do in the display, I think we need to have Plumber Mike's road warrior.  It should get trophy for at least "most abused."  LD

I'm in with the beatup Tiger. I'l try to get good and dirty before the show. I'm not interested in being judged, I'll save that for folks I ride with.

I'll be coming in from out of town so a couch to crash on may be needed. Think I'll bring my kid out for this one too. He's getting into the business, this would be good for him.

Maybe we can Lonesome Dave's KLR (some to be his) ready by that time.

I'm going to try to make it to the show.  Probably won't bring bike or gear, but I'll come help with the booth and perhaps the emptying of some cocktail containers afterwards.

So i may have dropped the ball on the reminder.... but the entry form listed March 17th as the last day to turn in entry forms to recieve the free T-shirt. (Not that I care to have a harley shirt).  anyway, i think we can still send in our applications, but I think we best get them in by the end of the week.  Who all is interested still?

I'll go to conrads sign this week and check on the cost of having a banner made, do we want it to look like the sticker i drew up a while ago?

For those in rapid... should we meet up for a couple beers and decide how we want our booth to look?  what kinda stuff we want to bring, etc?

bottom like I guess.... are we still doing this?

Jacin, I think you still have to send in a registration if you dont want judged, so they hold a spot for you....

I'm still in for the weekend. Has anyone decided what we want to do? I'm planning on bringing the Triumph, the new to Me (Lonesome Dave's former) KLR and my Kids KLR250. I can motify the herd according to how much room we have. Do I need to register even if I'm just bringing the bikes for the booth? Can we get some T-shirts made up for this too.

I'll be in town the weekend of the 31st if you want to plan something before that weekend.

Keep me posted.

Josh, clarify for me, we send registration and zero money if we are putting our bike in the DDSR booth, but not being judged. Sorry a bit dense today. the application is for Bud drinkers...he he

The very first post of this thread has the registration form as an attachment. The way I interpret the registration is that everyone, judged or not, needs to register, so they know how many bikes, and how much area each group needs. We dont have a predetermined space to just fill up with bikes...  is that the way everyone else reads it?  I sent my registration in today, paid my 30 bucks... I'd hate to be the only one trying to win the dualsport class!

I was under the understanding that we as a group would have a area for the group and to set up a display. Guess I was wrong which happens often.

So if i don't want my bike judged, just want it as part of the display, do I need to register? The first post stated we would have a group area. Do we know how big that area is and has anyone done the paper work for that group area?

Is it too late to register? Wonder if it would be easier if one person registered the whole group. I'll pony up a little cash.
Title: Re: 2012 BLACK HILLS MOTORCYCLE SHOW OFFICIAL THREAD
Post by: Sportfaller on March 21, 2012, 07:35:57 AM
the group will all be together, but there is not really a "group area" per say. All entries that wish to be together as a group will be grouped together, but as a function of the number of bikes registered.  Each bike gets 8x10, so if we had, say 4 bikes, we would get 8x40.  I'll call Clay at Hardley-Drivenson today to verify.

I'd say if you dont want to be judged, send in the registration, with the non-judged class identified, and DDSR listed as the group. no need to send the $30 unless you want judged.

I talked to Tod, one of the organizers today, and he said we're on the right track.

Here was his suggestion:
*everyone bringing a bike, send in a registration
*If you would like it judged, include the $30
*Be sure to write Dakota Dual Sport Riders in the section asking who you'd like to be next to, that way they put us all together
*they would like to have most entries in this week or early next, so they can plan accordingly
*they are excited to have us

Hope that covers it!

I too contacted the good folks over there, Clay was his name and he responded with this:

"Thanks Dan.  The deadline was only for judged bikes that wanted to receive a free t-shirt so you have time to get the bike registrations in for the non judged bikes.

Thanks for the email and we look forward to having your group display bikes."

There you have it. Will send my registration out tomorrow.

Plumber Mike,
I think if any bike were worthy of getting entered in the competition, it would be your Beemer.  It would certainly get the bada** award.  I think everyone at the show, no matter what sort of bikes they like, would appreciate your bike.
After seeing how you use if for your work vehicle,  a lot of tradespeople would start trading in their box vans for BMWs for their service calls.

Osnabrock is right, I would love to see that thing there.  If you remember, the first time we met at the Sturgis Rally about 2 years ago, out of thousands of bikes on Main street, I saw yours in all of its muddy glory.  I told you it was the prettiest bike there.  You said, "yea I just rode over here on the Galena trail."  Then you told me about DDSR

Another vote for Plumber Mike's bike. There is something funny about riding the Camp 5 trail on the way to the Sturgis rally. We should put up signs saying "free beer" at the 2012 Sturgis rally, see if we could funnel a few Harley riders down that trail. I kinda doubt it, most of them won't even touch gravel. Get dust on the chrome, and so on.

Wow! You sure know how to make a guy feel good ;D

Truth be told....I'm actually looking to attend the M/C show to get ideas and maybe look for work, or talk to others that might do what I'm looking to do. Buying bikes, fixin' 'em, and selling them is how I'd like to make a living. Purpose built bikes at affordable prices. I'm tired of plumbing and love motorcycles. Many people make a good living in this industry. Plumbing has taken me from my passion, friends, family etc...I've missed family functions and rides with you guys because I'm a slave to my work. When I'm working on my bikes, I'm able to stay home with the fam, go for rides with you guys and enjoy life. It's about 3:30am and this is a decision I have not made lightly. LIFES TOO SHORT!!!and I won't forget how to plumb :P I clean carbs too! just not laundry.

Crazy? Yes. I've been told anyway ;D

My donation to Mike's new venture is to buy his beer when we meet. I keep thinking a small independent shop like Arrowhead in Moab would be cool. My wife keeps telling me i need to find something i enjoy for work, so i would love to see you do this. We also need to promote the hills riding. There a lot to offer here, that's actually more doable for folks than the Rockies.  "Plumber Mikes" sounds like a great shop name too. Think of the conversations it would start.

If you like a good read, check out 'Shop class as Soul craft" the author did exactly what you want, started a small shop and has never looked back.

OK, I'll be the wet blanket.

Most everyone I know who works in the bike biz no longer likes bikes, or enjoys them nearly as much as they did as the stress of having to make a living off it ruins it for them.  Or they have to work such long hours that they no longer have time to enjoy them.

A few things to keep in mind:  SD has a short riding season.   Bikers in general are cheap asses and will go to great lengths to save a nickel.  Margins are slim in the industry.   While community minded, mature motorcycle people, such as the ones who attend our rallies or spend time on this and other forums are generally the best people in the world, there are also plenty of squids and idiots that don't know a spanner from spandex.

My suggestion would be to keep on plumbing, while scaling it back a bit, and start this biz on the side to see how it goes.

Now, with that said, if you do it, I hope you kick ass and have a blast.

I've (co) owned my own business (not bike related) for 12.5 years so I have the right to be cynical ;)  But then again, you've been your own man for many years and know what its all about too!

Hank- I do appreciate the honesty.I usually plan for the worst and hope for the best. I actually was talked out of building hot rods as a kid. I worked at a service station with a grumpy mechanic who said if I enjoy it, then not to do it for a living. I heeded his advice and was lured over to plumbing by a few quick bucks.
The reality of it is, I will still plumb some, but want to diversify my income with something that is enjoyable as well. I would rather sell units of product rather than hours of life even at a slight financial loss. It would allow me to work a little more from home, and get to be with my family more often. I would rather ride a $500 bike than let a $5000 one sit because I'm too busy working. Working on the bikes dosen't seem so much like work as therapeutic fiddle time. The market will dictate whether the time is worth the money.

Once I win the Baja 1000 solo, we will probably launch the clothing line, bolt on bits, and other useless garb 8)

Time will tell

Rich-Thanks for the offer. I had thought about tours/ ADV type campground. Put the land to work for me and get paid to ride. It can be done.

I think you should lead ATV/moto tours of the area. Must be plenty of spendy types around in the summer who would love to go "off road", but are intimidated by the trail maps, plaaning, etc. Rent ATVs with guided tours? Most idiots can drive a simple atv, and could dig some off road action. Rich folks like turn key; arrive and pay, go for a ride, take pictures, Facebook. You could charge a couple hundred for the afternoon, throw in a scenic lunch break somewhere. Must be somebody doing this...

Hey Mike I hope whatever path you take it goes well.  I'm just encouraging you to take a some what pessimistic view of the income potential then decide what to do.  If the number add up with a realistic (slightly pessimistic) outlook.. go for it!

The guided tour thing might go over well, the downside being you'd have a large investment in rigs.   Well that and dealing with all the people issues!
We did a family ATV tour on a vacation recently.  Had a 4 seat Rhino.  Two guides took our group on a three hour tour and fed us sandwiches.  It was expensive but quite fun actually.  I'd have rather just rented the ATV but it wasn't an option.   I got lucky and had a really small group and they all like to ride fast, and the guides were happy to oblige.

Yeah, have to admit I rented atvs over spring break in Cabo, not a novel idea. The atvs were in bad shape, but the guides and scenery were fantastic (picture baja desert, and sand dunes on the pacific). Also, my wife and youngest son could come along and have fun with little experience. If you wanted to go "bucks up" you could rent 100K baja race cars. Only 495.00 per person for the afternoon (3 hours)!

I, Fletch and Lonesome Dave was there. We came up with some ideas. I thought as discussed earlier to set up a tent or two. Can some on make a fake fire thing? I will, with the help of my son, steal some pics off the forum, print them and create a couple of display boards using some trail maps as a background. We would also like to create a liitle outdoorsy/woodsy look to the display; some small logs, Dave said we was gonna try to find some fake rocks. We'll need someone local to bring a table and a couple chairs if they don't provide them at the venue. would really like to have some T-shirts but that may not be possible. I wish we could get something to hand out. josh had said something about stickers. We need to get a list of who can come out and man the display so we can break up the day. Can you stay away from fishing fishing for a while? ;D

There's a few ideas. I may be missing something and if I remember anything else we discussed I'll drop another post.

Sorry I missed you guys yesterday....was out pickin'. Safe travels home Greatbuffalo.

See you all in 2 weeks

I plan on spending the weekend there, my fiancé will be out of town, and I won't have anything to do without the bike. I don't know if we will need a table, but I planed on bringing a camp chair, and my tent. Jacin, will you bring your nomad tent? I can round up some small logs to lay on the floor to mark the edge of our area. I'll look on amazon for one of the fake campfires. I should have a quote for the ddsr banner monday, so I'll let folks know what thats going to run.

We can get in at like 4 on friday to set up, I'll try to find someone to cover my ambulance shift that night.

We also talked about trying to get a few trees.  Josh, I'm thinking of you here or maybe Mike.  The idea was cutting a few jack pines that won't take up much room and screwing 2x4s around the base.  I don't know how to describe it, but I've seen it done.
We thought the trees would give the booth/s a real outdoorsy look.   Also if anyone has the green carpet grass that might help.  I use to have both astrotruf and grass carpet, but not sure how much anymore.  I will be checking.

Also talked about having a DVD playing some sort of adventure riding movie.  Or, maybe having several "you tube" type videos playing.

GB, we watched the "Cycles South" movies last night, still dumb as ever!

if we want DVD's I have a small flat scren 19" and DVD player ( or laptop if I can figure out how to get it to work?) I have Long way round, long way down, and on any sunday if you want to use any of those. I also have scrap 2x4's and plywood to build some based for trees.

I can handle getting a few trees, I'll have to check the rules about bringing flammable material.... Someone else want to head up a fake fire?  I like the idea of having a small flatscreen showing the long way down/ round

The only thing that is mentioned on the registration form as being a no go is Straw/hay bales. I plan on bringing a free standing tent. My son and I will work on the display boards as he is quite artistic.

I Think we will need a table for the display boards and DVD player etc.

I am planning on being there around 4ish Friday and will be there for the duration. I do want to get away for a while on Saturday to go ride a Ural I've got the hots for.

Ok, I got a quote back for a 3x5 banner with the DDSR logo from Conrads Big C signs.  looks like worst case scenerio would be $175.

I guess my question is what would folks be willing to pitch in to have a club banner? we could take it to our rallys and such...

I'd throw in $25, could we find another 6 folks?

Details again from the horses mouth (or maybe the hogs mouth)

This is to confirm that we have received your entry for the 24th Annual Black Hills Motorcycle Show to be held April 14th and 15th at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
•   Check in and set up times will be Friday, April 13th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM and Saturday, April 14th from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM.  We will be using the north entrance of the Civic Center.   There are gates on both the eastside and north side of the building, pull up to the gate, press the button and the front office will answer, tell them you are here to move into the motorcycle show and they will open the gate.  The door for entry will be marked or open.
•   Each paid entry checking in between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Friday evening will receive a professional photo of their bike by Kevin Eilbeck Photography.
•   Show times are from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on April 14th and from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on April 15th.
•   The awards program and acknowledgements will be at the conclusion of the show on Sunday, April 14th. Entries and displays will be released for removal right after the awards presentation.  Removal must be completed by 6:00 PM.  Please see a committee member if you have questions or concerns.
•   Display signage is subject to approval by the Bike Show Committee.
•   In order to meet fire code, your gas tank may be taped.  We have pin striping tape which you can apply after having the photograph taken.
•   Each paid entry will be issued 2 wristbands which will allow you and one other person admission to the show throughout the weekend.  You must show the wristband to get through the entrance.  This process will be strictly enforced.

We want to thank you for being part of the show and hope that you enjoy what has become one of the best motorcycle shows in the region.  Please tell your friends and family about the show so they, too, can see what all the excitement is about.  If you have questions or concerns, contact Clay Trulson at 605-381-0467.

I was thinking, for me any way,  with full luggage, and maybe my spare set of tires.  I am still unsure as to clean or not.... its pretty clean already, so I'll probably clean it up nice.

No Prob on the maps. I just thought it would be cool to have something to hand out.

Things have been hectic around here, thrying to work away from home and trying to get the crap done that needs to be done. Nathaniel and I spend spent from 6pm to 2am tonight in the shop trying to get stuff put together.

The KLR650 got the cases put on, not much else needed to be done to that.

My Tiger was a bit of a PIA tonight. I needed to check the valves and while I had the the thing all apart I checked the valves. changed the spark plugs and applied a new valve cover gasket. Did all that and took it for a quick ride. When I got back to the garage I had coolant and oil running on the floor. The coolant was easy, just tighten up some clamps I neglected. The oil however was a pinch in the valve cover gasket caused by a very tight gasket. So we pulled the whole dang thing apart and fixed what it needed. Thank God for my son's help.

Nathaniel has been working hard getting his KLR250 together for the show as well. It will make a statement, that's for sure.

Right now at almo 3 am I'm printing off DDSR pics but I'm running out of ink. We'll see how much we get.

Looking forward to a good time.

Quoteno joy on the maps

Maybe you could display an unfolded map on the wall, along with the pictures. It would give folks an idea of how many miles of trails there are to ride here, once they upgrade their Harley to a KLR.
