I would not miss it but would like to get an approx head count before hand. Also since a few of us are out here we might be able to arrange for some food and a cooler with ice again if anyone is interested?

Count me in!

Just found out today that the campground right next door to Fish n Fry (Wild Bill's) will be open that weekend. Might want to consider it.

I'm in.  On the KTM

My buddy Paul will be riding out on my DRZ400.   He's a streetbike guy (has a VFR800), maybe this will convert him  ;D

Does Wild Bills have a store or place to eat?    If so that would be a good idea IMO.

What kind of food? I could bring some steaks for the grill.  Does anyone have a grill???

What kinda steaks do you guys prefer?  I'm partial to Ribeyes or New Yorks.

The countdown is on.  So where are we staying?

My vote is for Wild Bill's or somewhere else that has a store / food.   I can live w/out a shower but I don't want to have to pack all the food / beer etc in if possible.

I agree, I like beer and food more than a shower!!  ;D

Wild Bill's is cool with me. Not sure if they have a store on-site, but I think so. Brian would know more since he just camped there last weekend. I know that Nemo Guest Ranch (2 miles from Boxelder Forks CG) has a store, a restaurant and a bar, but no showers.

Okay, So where is everyone staying?  I am working a 48 hr shift friday and Saturday but would like to meet up on Sunday morning if possible to ride with you guys.  I get off at 7 am and could easily make it by 8 am if we don't have a late call in the morning.

Well I have to bust for home early Sunday, but hopefully a few can stick around to ride Sunday. I have to fly out early, early Monday morning for the week.

Also, where / what is the official start time / place on Friday?   I'm trying to decide if we'll make it the whole way Thursday or just get close.  We probably won't leave Wtown until 2ish on Thursday, and I'm not all that jacked up about riding much after dark west river.  Pasting a deer would bring the fun to a very early end.  :o

I think we should stay at Wild Bills...closer to civilization, and BEER!

I'll be camping Friday and Saturday night, and will be able to ride all day Sunday.

Here's my plan:
-Get up to the campsite (wherever that may be) early Friday morning (early being around 9-10am). Set-up camp, then hit the trails!
-Camp Friday night, drink a lot of beer
-Ride Saturday
-Camp Saturday night, drink more beer
-Ride Sunday

Cool?

:cheers  Sounds like a good plan.    :chug

We'll just have to see what time we get out of here.  If we don't make it all the way we'll setup a rendezvous point, or we'll just do our best to be to camp by 9-10AM.

QuoteWe'll just have to see what time we get out of here.  If we don't make it all the way we'll setup a rendezvous point, or we'll just do our best to be to camp by 9-10AM.

Mapquest says 6h50m from Watertown to Deadwood...I figure you could do that in at least 6h flat. If you leave be 2:30 your time, you'll get there before dark! Call my cell if you're gonna be later.

So, it's Wild Bill's for sure? Everyone know where that is? Right next door to the Fish n Fry....

Do we need to worry about bringing ANY food? Are we going to eat at restaurants/whatever every meal? Fine with me, just want to know beforehand. My offer to bring steaks for one dinner still stands. Not sure what we would have with it, or how we could cook 'em up, you experienced campers let me know!

Here's the head count, so far:

Myself
Brian (I'm assuming)
Chad
Jason
Jason's buddy Paul
Dustin
Brett
Brett's buddy Brandon
Ryan
Joedaddy (Sunday only)
Matt (Dratharr) - tentative

Brett,

Are you gonna be camping Thursday night, or staying somewhere in Rapid?  I could bring up some supplies (cooler, dry ice, steak, etc) on Thursday night in my car, if you're gonna be there.

I could make it in 6-7 hours, but we have to keep in mind that Paul is riding my DRZ which has a seat like a 2X4 and an 80 miles gas range  :evil   I expect many stops.

Oh and it has a top comfortable cruising speed of 65mph as well.  Maybe I'll have to give him a 2 hour head start  ;D

Also, where / what is the official start time / place on Friday?

How about we plan on being ready to ride after lunch on Friday? This will give people time to set-up camp before the ride starts.

Since no one else seems to want to make a final decision, I declare Wild Bill's the official campsite of the 2nd DDSR Rally! (Just smack me if I'm outa line  ;D )

Official agenda:

1. Meet at Wild Bill's Friday morning, set up camp, greet riders, apply our new awesome stickers!
   - First one to Wild Bill's can pay for the site(s), then we can settle up later (?)
2. Find somewhere to eat lunch
3. Be ready to ride after lunch
4. Ride 'til sun goes down
5. Find somewhere to eat dinner and load up on adult beverages
6. Drink by the campfire and regale others with stories of our adventures!
-Optional back rubs courtesy of Little jacket  ;D
7. eat, ride all day Saturday, repeat steps 5 & 6
8. Ride Sunday 'til the last rider has to go home

Figure we would plan on starting the rides on Sat & Sun around 9am(?). Earlier, if everyone's ready.

I am hoping to make it up there Saturday morning; I wont be camping, I am bringing the wife and she is bringing her work! My chain and sproket are DOA, but the replacement is supposed to be here on Thursday, so if the stars align correctly I should be there. Looks like the weather is going to be good.

I will not be able to come up Thursday night, and have no idea if some sites are better than others. We don't need nothin fancy, just a place to put up a few tents.

Add Chris (Crizzay23) to the list of attendees!

Chris, Paul, and I will arrive at the campground Friday morning.
Chris and I will only be camping Friday night, but will ride until the end of the day Saturday.
I'm not sure if Paul will camp Sat night or not.

Chris, Dustin, Paul and I will be riding out together but all have our own plans for Thursday night and then again Saturday night.  Not sure if we'll all be riding back on Sunday together or not as Dustin might stick around and ride Sunday and Chris, Paul and I are rolling home early on Sunday.

I can't wait. I'm getting more excited as the hours roll by!

Good deal you were past due that is for sure, did the shop have any idea why that 606 was wearing so strange? I have never seen a front tire chunk apart like that. Do you have any idea what general area you might be riding Saturday morning? If I can't get out of work early on friday I might have to drive up Saturday morning.

Haven't been to the shop yet, going tomorrow and I'll see what they have to say about that front tire. Only had about 1500 miles on it, so seems strange it would wear so fast and uneven. I never seem to get as much life outa my tires as most, though. Probably my riding style combined with the demands of hauling my big ass around.  ;D

I'd assume we'll be riding somewhere around the Deadwood area, but I don't know exactly where.  ???

what tire pressures you runnin yeti?

i'm great at checkin pressures on my blackbird, but not so good on the klr.  i was noticing that my front tire was cupping a bit.  checked my pressure and it was 11psi (whoops).  i like to keep the klr treads at about 25.
Title: Re: Hills fall ralley Sept 19,20,21 signup
Post by: The Yeti on September 17, 2008, 12:01:37 PM
I'm pretty anal about checkin tire pressures, pretty much every time I fill up. Keepin the 950 at 34f/37r. I think I just ride like a maniac on the tarmac (high speed braking wearing out front tires) and spin up the rear too much off-road.  ;D

I was looking at Wild Bills web site and it looks like we can get a group rate, 63 dollars for 10 people that's only 6.30 a piece!  ;D I'm not sure were their group spots are but I was thinking some were in the 70-80 spot range. Here's a link to the map http://www.wildbillscamp.com/CampMap.htm (http://www.wildbillscamp.com/CampMap.htm) Otherwise the lady said there's a two person max per site and one site was 16.25.  :o

I'll have a fire goin and some cold ones if anyone wants to stop out Thur. ;D

I think the group sites are like #1-#9, the ones with the picnic tables and shelters. Did she say if we were limited as to the number of tents on each site?  (Edit: Just spoke with Alissia at Wild Bill's, there's no limit to the number of tents we can have.)

So, you're gonna have to spend $16.25 for the night on Thursday??  :P  That sucks.

If we count all 12 people, looks like about $6 a night, per person...not too bad. I think we should get the electric hookup, too. I could use it to re-charge camera batteries & cell phone.

Once again, whoever is up there first on Friday morning is gonna have to pay up front for the site. I'd say just tell them there's gonna be 10 of us, and if we have more and they bitch we'll worry about that when we get to it. Sign up for the electric, too. I'm bringing a power strip.

Food: should I worry about bringing steaks? I can get some sweet t-bones at FTC this week for about $4 each if anyone wants to chip in. Still unsure of how to cook 'em, don't wanna grill 'em on the fire grate.... ??? Or, could just go into Deadwood for all the Prime Rib & crab you can eat.  :eat

I'd kinda like to do some exploring in the NW corner of the hills. I've never been out that way. Take off west from Savoy in Spearfish Canyon (I heard there's a "Little Grand Canyon" back there  ???), see if we can make it to Buckhorn for lunch, then SE to Deerfield, N to Rochford, N to Deadwood.

re: ride suggestions.

i'm curious to see how the riding pans out for the group with our different bikes.  the ttr225 i'm bringin out for my brother to ride is definitely not a highway cruiser.  60mph is really pushing that little thing.  him and i will not be able to do a lot of highway riding for that reason, unless we know where everyone is headed and get a good head start on the group.  we will be sticking to mostly dirt roads.

that being said there may be some rides where the ttr, and our klr's will shine that the bigger bikes might not have as much fun, like some of the stuff we rode on at ddsr 1.

something to think about.

maybe some big group rides as well as splitting the group up for some rides too depending on what everyone wants to do.

personally, if brandon and i just flat can't keep up on the highway, i have no problem riding our own ride and letting everyone else do their thing.  i/we don't want to keep anyone from truly enjoying their weekend.  we're pretty self sufficient if need be.

I really want to go out the back of whistler's gulch and do the cool hill climbs up to the top of strawberry.   I think about that hill often.

I would think (hope) our highway riding would be very limited.   I'll get plenty that on the way out and back!   10 or 20 miles to get somewhere good would be worth of course though.. and we can wait 5 minutes for the TTR no problem.

Whistler Gulch sounds like a good ride for Friday afternoon, close to camp.

Yeah, Brett, you guys can split off if ya want, but the slab will be minimal, I assure you.  You may want to get into some technical stuff more suited to the small bikes, and that's fine, too.

I've spent most of my time in the NW corner, mostly hiking or in trucks though.  Haven't seen the Little Grand Canyon yet but I'll ask my friend about it.

"Devil's Bathtub" is supposed to be neat and it's just outside of Spearfish Canyon.

If you're over that way check out Cement Ridge fire lookout across the Wyo border.  There's a gnarly road up the backside of it that would be sweet on a bike.  I did it in my Nissan and my friend got out and walked cuz he didn't want to be in it in case I rolled off the cliff edge.  But bikes would be fine. ;D ;D

Also "Boundary Rd" is fun -- it's a bigger road that's not too technical, but there's some whoops and ruts that keep it interesting.

Iron Creek Lake is pretty if you're in the area.

yea hank, with all the slab your posse is putting on, we may not be the only ones wanting to minimize the road time.

Brian if you can, bring your management map with the hilighted trails..  I forgot mine!
