Okay everyone, this Saturday is our monthly breakfast.  Cambell Street Cafe (behind Kmart) on Cambell Street.  9 am

Also, we're supposed to have a big snow storm on Thurs/Friday.  We'll wait till then to see how bad it really is.

It was nice to see everyone this morning at Breakfast.  Thanks for coming.
As always, various conversations are engaged, and it sometimes includes motorbikes!
I don't believe I have ever been to breakfast or a campfire gathering that I did not learn something new.
Today was no exception.

There was a question about USN sea duty and shore duty; I incorrectly stated that it was 2years of sea duty (assigned to a ship, usually) and then 2 years of shore duty. =2/2 rotation cycle.
After some thought, the mid-90's rotation was 3 years ship, two year shore duty (as I recall).
There were some exceptions to that; if you were in a critical rating, you could easily find yourself in a 2/2 rotation, which is what I experienced as a Naval Aviator.

There was a separate question, perhaps confusion concerning ship deployments, and that the SecNav is trying to make deployments 6m at sea, then 6m in the home port, which will include some at sea time of 3d to 30d +/- to make sure the ship/crew are operating at a minimal state of readiness.

So to answer a question about how often the ship's crew has a complete turnover, ~1/3 of the crew changes every year.
The people who issue Official Orders (called Detailers in the Navy), try very hard to make those change of duty location from sea to shore duty, etc.,  attempt to make most of those personnel changes occur to coincide with children's school schedules so as be the least disruptive to the families and the children school schedules.

Using Google-fu-
Presently, it is three year sea duty, followed by a three year shore duty rotation schedule.

The Basics

There are many rules and regulations surrounding job assignments in the Navy. In general, sailors are assigned to ships or submarines (sea duty) for three years, and shore duty for three years. That doesn't mean that sailors will spend their entire three-year deployment at sea, since ships and submarines spend a large amount of time docked in their home ports. Though expect about half your time deployed or out to sea training to deploy.

On another subject, it was GPS satellites.  Funny how you can transpose 'geostationary' satellites, such as communication with GPS satellite, which I was embarrassed to say, I thought GPS satellites were geostationary as well. (How did I misunderstand that!)

The Global Positioning System

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a constellation of about 24 artificial satellites. The GPS satellites are uniformly distributed in a total of six orbits such that there are four satellites per orbit. This number of satellites and spatial distribution of orbits insures that at least eight satellites can be simultaneously seen at any time from almost anywhere on Earth. The GPS satellites circle the Earth at an altitude of about 20,000 km (13,000 miles) and complete two full orbits every day. The GPS satellites are not in a geostationary orbit, but rise and set two times per day. Each satellite broadcasts radio waves towards Earth that contain information regarding its position and time. We can receive this information by using special receivers, called GPS receivers, which can detect and decode this information. By combining signals transmitted by several satellites and received simultaneously, a GPS receiver can calculate its position on the Earth (i.e., its latitude and longitude) with an accuracy of approximately 10 m. There are more sophisticated receivers that can be used to determine position with an accuracy of a few millimeters.
