Spring Rally has been set. June 17 - 20, 2021. Custer Crossing Campground
Dates for Spring will Father Day weekend again, June 17 - 20
There was a loose meeting of some minds at the the fall rally about next spring. It was mentioned by a few to check into Custer Crossing Campground. The main thing is easy access to both two track and single track. They have nice cabins and a restaurant.
In talking with Laurie, her and her husband David have owned the place for 3 years. They have made lots of improvements. They are also trying to get their name out there as a destination for offroad motorcyclists so our group would be very welcomed.
Here is the particulars:
RV Sites: $35 a night
RV sites are Electric only, 30 and 50 amp. They have enough hose to fill water tanks and have a dump station on site. For their longer stays they can pump them out.
Cabins: $55 a night
Cabins are nice with 2 new queen beds in each. Also have heat and A/C.
Tents: $10 a night
Tents can be set up in various area on nice grass.
They are also offering us a 10% discount on RV, Cabin and Tent rates.
*ADDED* There is a $50 dollar reservation fee. If you cancel up to 1 week before you will 1/2 back. This is the only thing I didn't like but apparently they have had a lot of people bail on them.
I think this will be a very nice place to stay and would serve all better. There is better access to trails for all and the single track guys will be happier. The owners are very helpful and friendly. They would LOVE to have our business.
Just a reminder to be thinking about making reservations early if you haven't already done so. After the new year people start thinking about the spring. Get the jump before things fill up.

Thanks for the kick in the tail Dan. I just made the call.
I would also like to thank all of you for your efforts!
See you all in June!
Another friendly reminder to get your reservations in before its too late. They have had cabin reservations from our group but only a couple of RV Reservations from DDSR.
I'm going to wing it.
I'm thinking worst case I should be able to find a tent spot.
Went to Custer Crossing for Breakfast yesterday and got a cabin reserved for DDSR from Thurs to Sat nite!
They only have 2 more left!
Camper and tent sights are still quite open. I'd get on it before these sites get taken over by summer-time UTV fans.
Wacked
Just reserved a cabin for the rally. They are down to one cabin available for that weekend.

Any chance for Single Track for Seniors on Saturday? :)
Single Track for Seniors Run?
I like it. Should have Ron take you out for a run - NAH.... that would be mean.
Sure.... I can lead a "Chilled" single track Saturday. Would like to keep it to no more than 5-6 victims.

HEY GUYS IT'S MOTHERS DAY NEXT WEEK - BE NICE TO MAMA SO SHE WILL LET YOU COME OUT TO RIDE ON FATHERS DAY WEEKEND!
Thats right, the DDSR Spring Rally is only 1.5 months away. Get signed up at the campground. Ask your boss for time off!
This year it's in a new place. We've tried to position ourselves more in the middle of the riding country. The food is good if you don't want to cook. We should have a better "common meeting" place than last year. There will be some group dining this year - communal suppers Friday and Sat.
Just a reminder - bring some type of navigation with you!!! C'mon, your buddies might leave you in the woods because you take too many pee breaks or they wanted to go home to get out of the rain.... You need to have a way to drag your own tail out of the woods. If you a Garmin person cool; If not or you are just a plain cheep-ass like Sprout, then down load the FREE Avenza system onto your smart phone. The 3 maps that you need are MVUM Northern Hills Ranger District, MVUM Mystic Ranger district, and MVUM Hell Canyon Ranger District
See you'all soon

I really like Avenza. Cant wait to use it some more.
signed- frugal rider that has almost mastered a smart phone.

Flea Market Tradition
Guys -
We are one month out from an awesome get-together where tall tales will be told, egos will be changed, and dust will be eaten ..... for some reason, off-road riders think this is fun!?
Make sure your camping sites are reserved and that you've downloaded some type of mapping system.
That brings me to a DDSR tradition that takes a little preparation - bringing some of your unused or old motorcycle stuff to the Rally and pawning it off to another attendee. Go dig around your garage space this next week and see what kind of clothing or parts need to be moved on to another rider. We'll set up a couple of tables Sat. afternoon and night so you can display your treasures.
See you in a month!
As of yesterday Custer Crossing campground is full.
We booked a spot at Roubaix lake campground.
It is a Park Service campground and you book it online.
There are no services, so bring your generator.
Good to know - Just rode thru that area last night and there may also be some boon-docking back to the east of the camp if that's your thing

Brad, remind me to talk about this area when we get together tonight at Dakota Point.
I think its becoming ever apparent that when we make these plans 8 months ahead of time, that is the time to make reservations. You can always cancel if it doesn't work out.
Was at Custer Crossing for breakfast. Had a conversation with Laurie. She was trying to get a handle on how many will be in for breakfast each morning. I said maybe 20. She was thinking if it more than that she would do a breakfast buffet to make the logistics easier for them. She also mentioned that may be a bit short handed as is the rule in the Hills this summer. Please be patient with them.
I took a ride to the Northwest. There could be some boondocking spots off of Custer Crossing Rd. Will do a bit more scouting the week after next.
I got last spot at fish n fry last week
I have many problems but here is a couple. It's been many years since I attended the DSDR. My kids were pretty small at the time.
I know it says bike must be street legal, but my kids 11, 13, and 15 want to come.
Will there be a group that will ride mostly single track and mostly stay off 385? My youngest and oldest will probably enjoy easier stuff. My 13 year old will want to ride anything you throw at her.
Toadl -
One of pieces that made Custer Crossing appealing was it's quick access to the small trails - just 1/2 mile down the road you can jump on the Nemo trail system or go to the West and get into the Experimental Forest system and wander your way down to Pactola or across to Rochford. Especially the stuff West of 385 should be kid friendly and you'll be able to spend several days exploring those trails.
I don't think anybody will get snippy if you bring a trail bike w/o road tags. But the reality of the Hills are that the trail systems are not fully connected; so you tend to ride an area - pop out - go a couple miles down the road and then jump into another area and ride it out. Thats why registration is discussed.

Cheap ASS?? I'm sure I will be waiting on Brad to get out a the woods...not the other way around. Besides my flip phone doesn't have gps :-*
Spoke too Laurie at Custer Crossing today and she was thinking about doing a breakfast buffet while we are there based on my assumption that there will be about 20 people from.our group that will likely do breakfast. If there are any that have not signed up on the sign up thread, please do so we have good idea on how many will be there.

Just bought my BH trails permit.
Pretty excited to see some of the area from the dirt after at least 6 trips out to the Hills on pavement.
The hills are often best seen through the trees. Besides, its a lot quieter out there with (usually) less people.

Hi Dan, I see you have the Yamaha Tenere 700, how are you liking the bike? I sold my KTM 990 and the T7 is on my list of bikes to check out, if it ever becomes available...
Tom I love it. Have got very few issues with it.

Yesterday, had breakfast at Custer Crossing and did some scouting with Dave on a route he's laying out. Some things came to mind:
- bring a chair for hanging around the campfire
- bring fuel or a Gerry can so we minimize the bottle neck at the pump .... I thought they had 2 pumps; guess its only 1
- you may want to bring a scarf or baclava for out on the trail - It was dusty out there!
Looks like the temps should be decent for riding at the end of the week!
Is there a chance of Saturday Senior Single Track or should I bring a dual sport? Thanks.
Tim - We do have an easy single track scheduled for Saturday. Kyle will be leading it and promised to keep it low key. It snakes down Experimental Forest and on the West side of Mystic

I'm planning on getting out there as early as possible Thursday - probably mid afternoon before I'd show up at the camp. Will also be riding Friday.
Hank, Mike us leading a single track ride on Friday.

Awesome! I'll be riding my old 400, mostly because I have a bit of a commute from where I'm staying. I'd rather have my 300 for ST, but the 400 is still more capable than I am (by a long shot), so it should be ok!
I believe the single track on Friday starts at Sugar Shack

I think Brad will be along shortly to post all the rides, but if you are interested in single track I will be leaving the Sugar Shack at 9:30 both Friday and Saturday. (could be talked into Sunday too?). The plan for Friday is the nice easy stuff S. of Sugar Shack, then up to Riley Hill, then Nemo via 8575. Plenty of places to bail out along the way if you only want to do part of the day. Should all be relatively easy. Then on Saturday we will ride some of the more challenging stuff for those who are into that sort of thing.
**contrary to campfire rumors this is not some sadistic death ride. Nobody has ever been seriously injured, left for dead, disappeared, or had a permanent psychological disability from this ride. We will adjust to whatever speed everyone is comfortable with and when you've had enough we will get you to a road within 10 minutes. No reason not to give it a try.. I will call it the peace love and happiness single track ride.....

WOW, Brad that is some amazing organization! I need to find some of the organizational skills and knowledge to get something like this put together for the July Tenere / adventure bike rally.
The motorcycle school is killing me this spring with rider coaches retiring and one quiting because of heat exhaustion every time it gets hot. I'm just going out to get last years fall rally dirt washed off the Beta, and ready for some TLC, fresh fluids and tires. The Italian princes hasn't even been out of the garage yet this year. :'( :'( :'(
I can't wait to see everybody!

So I looked up the site and registered. If Jerry reads this want you to know we stopped by your camp to look at the Kawasaki on the trailer. Great looking bike! May still want to buy it off you if your interested. I might have a buyer. Did not spend any time looking at your ebike though.

I wanted to extend a sincere thank you to the Dakota Dual Sport Riders. I brought my sons last year and had a wonderful time with Brad as an EXCELENT Ride leader. My wife was a weeee bit jealous of the time we had. SO. I brought her this year and sent the kids to church camp. My wife does great on gravel roads and "Midwest two track" but had never been on something like the back side of Cement Ridge. Well she was certainly not fast, but she pulled up her britches and rode it and maybe hit the ground but she got back up and she built skills, and learned from one of the best group of guys we have had the pleasure of riding with. Paul, Nathaniel, Derek, and Joel, I believe were the guys names that we rode with. These guys are true gentlemen! They represent the best that South Dakota has to offer in my opinion and that is great people. (Trails are pretty cool too) These guys were patient with Mackenzie and were just a crack up to listen to on the communicators and I want to shout out a HUGE thank you. It is hard to get the ladies to ride with us, but with guys like these, I can tell you she had fun and felt safe. SO there it is guys. Thank you. If you ever want to ride Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma the places I know well. You know who to call I will show you the best I can offer.
Thank you very much guys ! It was great meeting you and riding with you ! I will be back for the next one !
Big Mike from the Nebraska crew.

Welcome to DDSR - hope you come ride with us in the future. We have leaders for all rider levels and you will see trails you never new existed.
The KDX220 is a 1997 model that I purchased from the original owner. He put on just a few miles a year to keep the bike serviced. I have had the bike for 3 years and have put on a couple of hundred miles. The bike has the original tires with very little wear. I put on the tusk lighting kit and got the bike titled and licensed. Also added the FMF muffler. I'm looking to get $2500 for the KDX220. I will try to post some pictures Sunday when we get back from a funeral in ND.
